AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution tested: big fps wins - but image quality suffers

Digital Foundry : AMDs FidelityFX Super Resolution is finally here, and we've been able to test it out across a number of titles. The idea here is pretty straightforward: to dramatically increase performance while minimising the hit to image quality. So the questions we had going into this one were simple enough: how does FSR actually work? How does it look in comparison to native resolution imagery? And how does it stack up against top-end temporal upscaling solutions, like the excellent technique built into Unreal Engine 4? We can answer those questions today, but what we cannot do is offer any comparisons to Nvidia's DLSS: test material simply isn't available.

Still quite a bit of work to do to catch up with Nvidia & DLSS it seems, but Nvidia has also had more time... I'm sure in the future AMD will nail this.

Neonridr1459d ago

true but then who knows what Nvidia will have by then.

-Hermit-1459d ago

When it comes to GPU's, Nvidia's features keeps demolishing AMD. It's why I won't buy an AMD GPU. They are kicking ass in the CPU department though.

jznrpg1459d ago (Edited 1459d ago )

5k$ GPUs

Sephiroushin1459d ago

I use Nvidia, and their stuff are usually great but Nvidia stuff are always hardware relate and not easy to implement (DLSS for example), they remind me of the PS3... And freesync while Gsync is better it cost a lot more and freesync madurated enough to be good... By the time FSR take over they will havee new tech hardware related that Amd will copy catch up and take over and the cicle will probably continue....

anubusgold1459d ago (Edited 1459d ago )

@Sephiroushin Gsync isnt better than freesync i have 4 monitors two of each and on fast paced games the Nvidia monitors seem to have more blur in games and less smoothness when gsync is on . I miss freesync with my amd cards the same games seem more clear and smoother in fast action in multiplayer.

Vits1459d ago

Yeah, losing for TAAU is a bit rough. Not exactly the DLSS competitor that a lot of people were claming it would be. But hopefully it will improve with time.

ocelot071459d ago

It will improve. Dlss 1.0 was pretty much like what Fidelity FX is now. Decent FPS gains but image quality suffered.

Then they kept working in it and eventually got dlss 2.0 and it's pretty darn good.

Qdog1458d ago (Edited 1458d ago )

....

Qdog1458d ago

Agreed, if we were to compare FSR 1.0 to DLSS 1.0, then FSR is superior in every way.

metabolicfrolic1458d ago

FSR is open source and extremely easy for a developer to impliment. Since it's open source, I can foresee FSR developing at a faster rate than DLSS.

Father__Merrin1459d ago

Will improve over time and even better it's available to all and all graphics cards we'll mainly all anyways. AMD graphics cars are excellent now

CantThinkOfAUsername1459d ago

That's actually a win for Nvidia. Whether a developer decides to implement DLSS or FSR, RTX cards owners can run both so they aren't left out (of course it's AMD's consumer-friendly and industry-advancing move).

Sephiroushin1459d ago

Same as freesync, in the case of FSR it might take over faster since many gamess on consoles will probaably implement it, it seems to be easy to implement too... We all win!

Qdog1458d ago (Edited 1458d ago )

Short of getting a big money hat from Nvidia, why wouldn't a dev use FSR which is free, open-source, can be implemented alot faster and easier than DLSS, and works on Nvida and AMD hardware? Seems like it's actually a win for AMD unless Nvidia makes DLSS open source, free, and hardware agnostic...which they would never do, since it's tied to the RTX tensor cores.

MocBistro1459d ago

Unless you're on a bidget. Dont reach for AMD, at least until now.

Killer73nova1459d ago

AMD cpu with Nvidia GPU is a total beast

StoneyYoshi1459d ago

Im holding out for RDNA3. My 5700xt still does work!

Qdog1458d ago (Edited 1458d ago )

Nothing I love more than running a Gameworks game 4k max with all the Nvidia features enabled....on my 6900xt.

StoneyYoshi1459d ago

If you use anything below ultra quality, yes it looks like crap.

waverider1459d ago (Edited 1459d ago )

If this works with weaker and older GPU is still really great. getting better performance and stable game is better then a bit higher rez. For many gamers better gameplay is better then shinnier graphics! less stuter is better then a bit higher rez.

Killer73nova1459d ago

I still have my 580 so I’m excited to see if I can hit some higher frames

Nintendo are #1 while PS and Xbox fight for 2nd

CrashMania2h ago

yeah nothing is gonna dethrone nintendo in japan, especially if there's a handheld involved.

Avfe631h ago

nothing is gonna dethrone Nintendo in any country

gold_drake20m ago

not surprised, the switch is relatively cheap in japan.

Avfe634m ago

It also broke the previous records set by PS4 in the west

So it’s not just Japan. Its global.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.

They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.

Nightcrawler8922h ago

Hope they use his vision in the game

Inverno22h ago

Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?

Scissorman6h ago

it was not. it greatly expanded the areas and puzzles to the point where it felt like an entirely new game. the enemies and boss fights were given a MASSIVE upgrade. the abstract daddy fight in particular was incredible. and the team added two new endings.

Pedrof21h ago

I wouldn't hold my breath on "bold".

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole1d 13h ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK1d 7h ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 2h ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif1d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin20h ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer1d 18h ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

Christopher1d 18h ago

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning771d 14h ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay1d 2h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer20h ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.
