PS5 Share Play Now Lets PS4 Players Join In On the Fun

The PS4 and PS5 Share Play feature has been upgraded to allow the two console generations to play together over the Internet.

Orchard1408d ago

Now scalpers can unbox & plug in the PS5's they are hoarding and rent you play time on them remotely :P

VenomUK1408d ago

@Orchard. I never thought of that but will definitely give it a go as it's a great way to monetise all my scalped units.

If any PS4 owners want to know what it feels like to play classic PlayStation hit Knack on a PS5 via back compatibility streamed with Share Play to their console then send me an email at [email protected].

andy851408d ago

Do people really think scalpers hoard them. The price is steadily dropping. They turn a profit quickly. Hopefully more parts become available so this all stops.

northpaws1408d ago

I agree, scalpers buy, and then they are sold asap, they wouldn't risk keeping them just to drive the price up, because the instant PS5 are back in stock, the PS5 they hold doesn't worth a cent more than retail price.

Tacoboto1408d ago

So your friend can use their DualShock 4 to play your PS5 games, and you still can't!

*something something generations*

northpaws1408d ago

whine whine whine whine whine

Snookies121408d ago

I mean... It's a fair point, lol.

northpaws1408d ago

If I am to play Ratchet and Clank with my PS4 controller, it would have been a completely different (inferior) experience, in that sense, it is good to enforce people to use the PS5 controller, which is comes with every PS5 sold anyways.

When remote share to your friends who own a PS4 controllers, you can't expect them to buy a PS5 controller just for that, and in this case, it is the "remote play" application works with PS4 controllers natively, which is a completely different scenario.

So, I stand by what I said, people now just "whine whine whine whine whine" without using their brains to think if it is logical or not.

Tacoboto1408d ago (Edited 1408d ago )

@north

I purchased MK11 at launch on my PS5. I played with my spouse. Me on DS, them on DS4.

The upgrade came out after. I upgraded, sweet PS5 enhancement! I had to buy a second DualSense because...

Logic logic, durkadurka. But I can still play matches on my phone with my Xbox One controller. Logic!

northpaws1408d ago

@Tacoboto

You still don't get it then, let me explain one more time.

PS5 Controllers are required for PS5 games, the reason is, if developers can't assume all PS5 games have haptic feedback or adaptive triggers, they cannot they full advantage of the controller.

For example, in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, if you can play the game with the DS4, then most of your weapons would lost half of the functionalities, this is only possible when Sony said PS5 requires DualSense controllers. They take the stand to make sure their advanced features are being used.

Now in this case of Remote Play, your DS4 is compatible with the Remote Play app, not compatible with the PS5 itself, this is a different scenario, because playing PS5 games through Remote Play on the PS4 is not the standard way to play PS5 games, they don't have to guarantee the experience is perfect, it is just a convenience, to allow PS4 players to try out PS5 games in less than optimal setting.

If DualSense is not required, THEN adaptive trigger would truly become a gimmick that everyone would forget.

Tacoboto1408d ago (Edited 1408d ago )

TL;DR they're required because they're required, not because it may benefit the consumer to have a backup DS4 for native games to let guests or friends play a quick game at a rare Covid-era hangout.

That friend can just stay home and play with the same controller remotely lol

northpaws1408d ago

@Tacoboto

Call me selfish, but I care about my experience more than my friends who come visit once in a while.

Tacoboto1407d ago

... and that's exactly the point, man. It shouldn't be a debate to just be able to use your old controllers for those reasons, especially when Sony already gives several ways to do it off the system.

DazaMc1407d ago

They aren't getting the full next/this gen experience, just like Xbox owners.

Petebloodyonion1408d ago

Really cool feature
But and it's a huge but
Could Sony now explain this since you can play Playstation 5 game with a DS4 on another system?

From Playstation Blog
"Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

Tacoboto1408d ago

Since Day 1 we've been able to use an Xbox controller with Remote Play on iOS. That is supported and fully works, even the Guide button is recognized as the PS Button.

This is simply Sony forcing early-adopter accessory sales.

enkiduxiv1408d ago

I pity all the poor gamers who won't get to experience the Dual Sense this gen. Ratchet and Clank and Returnal are unplayable without that controller. This is why Sony can confidently offer this feature without having to worry about scalpers renting out next gen exclusives to anyone with a ps4. All this Share Play feature does is give console owners the ability to play games from another room with their Dual Sense controller in hand.

deleted1408d ago

@enkiduxiv "unplayable" is waaay hyperbolic. However, both games are incredibly heightened w the dual sense haptics and I'd absolutely prefer to play with them. Still good games though on their own.

-I do think Rift Apart may be the best use of the dual sense outside of Astrobot's Playroom.

1408d ago
Sunny123451407d ago

Returnal and rachet are actually unplayable without the dual sense. When on dual sense L2 acts as two buttons, and on dualshock4 Its one button, many guns lose their usability and hence functionality. So yeah, have you guys even tried the new games ot just like to come here and troll

deleted1407d ago

@Sunny12345 Yes, I've had the game since Friday morning's launch. I've tried it in remote play from my PS5 in the living room, to my PS4 in the office and yes it IS playable. You may be limited to using 1 of each weapon's 2 shot types (such as a half press for precision shots, or full press for rapid fire)..... but the game absolutely still works, and you could complete the entire game... thus, not unplayable.

deleted1407d ago (Edited 1407d ago )

@Sunny12345 Actually, I just went back and retried it on Remote Play with a DS4 right now, bc I had only briefly experimented with it.... and the half presses DO work on the DS4 also! There may not be that haptic feel to make the half press easily distinguishable, but the half press does work bc the DS4 triggers are still analogue and not digital.

So @Sunny12345, I surmise that you haven't actually tried playing Ratchet and Clank Into the Rift in Remote Play with a DS4 at all and don't actually know what you're talking about, and neither does @enkiduxiv. I challenge you to go try it right now.

OptimusDK1407d ago

@enkiduxiv
YOU get a PS5 controller with the console - so why would you not get the FULL experience.
Only if you are stupid to use another old DS4 controller - and why would you? so this utter bullox.

The point here is - do you need to force everybody to have a second controller - this is very different. And yes every developer can rest asured that ALL PS5 owner will have the new controller - so... what is the f..ing problem.

This is pure stupid and only a money grab by SONY nothing else - and you are gobling it all up.
Jesus crist this is pathetic how you are played.

Teflon021408d ago

Because Shareplay isn't actually playing PS5. Think of it like this. You have a PS5, you're using all it's features, they just are getting a sample of the game not a sample of the whole system so it's entirely different

Petebloodyonion1407d ago

And yet I remember at the same period last year when Sony was saying that they were hesitant about showing Gameplay because Ps5 is all about sense and it can't be felt on a screen,
If this is the case then I really doubt that Sony would allow Share play between generations since it would basically be the same as a cheap demo.

northpaws1408d ago

PS5 Controllers are required for PS5 games, the reason is, if developers can't assume all PS5 games have haptic feedback or adaptive triggers, they cannot they full advantage of the controller.

For example, in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, if you can play the game with the DS4, then most of your weapons would lost half of the functionalities, this is only possible when Sony said PS5 requires DualSense controllers. They take the stand to make sure their advanced features are being used.

Servbot411408d ago

Every game lets you disable the haptic junk.

1408d ago
northpaws1408d ago

@JustTheFax

Ya, I don't know how would that work because half press and full press do different things.

northpaws1408d ago

@Servbot41

You are just here to say shit without any constructive feedback, don't even know why do you care if DS4 controllers work or not then.

Petebloodyonion1407d ago

And again why allowing Share play between Ps5 and PS4 if it lessens the experience like a bad demo and
Why allow the distant user to decide if he wants or not the experience but denies that right to the owner of the console?
Last I check Sony is not preventing you to play on a basic 720P tv so why do this regarding the controller?
Unless Sony wants the money from the extra Ds5

Servbot411407d ago

@northpaws
Rift Apart for example lets you change the Fire Mode in Toggles & Assists to be a simple "Hold" or "Toggle" option. Like I said, games let you disable the controller gimmicks; there's no reason to not allow users to play with their DS4s other than "Give us more money."

DazaMc1407d ago

Sony like money shocker! Call the press quick. Do you understand that they are trying to enforce a new technological standard? The only way to do that is to make the controller exclusive to PS5, otherwise companies wouldn't bother with the fancy new features.

Gamer751408d ago

That seems like a good thing for those who will use it

waderae1408d ago

its weird its being Tweeted out by Sony today as if it were a new thing?

I literally let my mate play Returnal on my PS5 via share play whilst he was on a PS4 on launch day. (April 30th)

Teflon021408d ago

Yeah this update is from like March or april not sure why this is news now lol. Was added literally a week after finding out you couldn't share play between ps4 and ps5 lol. Was great timing

Welshy1407d ago

I'm glad to finally find a comment talking about this already being a thing and not news. This was added months ago and isn't new at all.

Raimond1407d ago

Yes I was surprised that N4G posters thought this was BRAND NEW. It's a few months old news, but glad more people know about it now.
