Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Review - A Visual And Gameplay Theme Park Dragged Down By Story - PSU

From PSU: "Technically Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a PS5 showstopper, offering stunning graphics and set pieces that make use of the PS5's SSD, while also looking like the best animated movie we have ever seen. But, although combat is fun, the narrative of Rift Apart really drags down the experience, not treating its characters with respect and not meaningfully progressing the story for long time fans and leaving newcomers confused. Rift Apart is a fun ride, but ultimately not one you will be talking about for years to come."

BenRC011431d ago

Its the usual 9s on embargo then down to 7s later on.

tombfan1431d ago

Later on? You do realize that the embargo hitted just 2 hours ago?

roadkillers1431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

That's generally how it is. The bad reviews trickle in later. This game will end up being average for a ratchet game in terms of score.

Edit: Average is good for R&c

tombfan1431d ago

Wouldn't "Average" be a score between 70-75?

I mean... 75 - 85 are usually great and 85-95 are awesome, so i don't see the "Average" part on it...

roadkillers1431d ago

Misconstrued, what I meant was the average scores for R&C games are generally pretty good. With this having a average R&C score means it falls in line with the others.

elazz1431d ago

Can you prove your claim? No you can't. Check metacritic or opencritic. It's at 89 with almost 90 reviews. Delete your comment or apologize if you have some dignity.

Om4ever1431d ago

Who do you think you are to ask that !!!

gamer78041431d ago

Seems like a 7.5 or 8 to me but I enjoy more serious story character based games. If you enjoy this style of game I could see how that person would rate it a 9. You really don’t need reviews really to know if you’ll like this game or not.

tombfan1431d ago

I'm glad your eye sight is more than enought to make a critic about a game, i'm sure you'd be one of those people that just put scores randomly on pages like Metacritic, or even worse, the ones that put 0 just because "It's another child game, meh"

gamer78041431d ago

Tombfan. Yah ive played ratchet and clank before, well made games just not my type of game. I was just here saying if I had to review this type of game for me it would be about an 8 tops. 9 and 10s have to really move me story or character wise. So I can see how someone could rate it like this. It’s just preferenc.

It's almost as of you have no idea what you're talking about.

darthv721431d ago

And this is coming from a PS centric site of all places.

chiefJohn1171431d ago

A lot of PS games reviews center around how much they enjoyed the story. Seem like this review was more heavy on the story than gameplay. While so reviews be the opposite

Neonridr1431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

goes to show that not everyone is biased I guess. :P

That being said, this is one person who maybe didn't enjoy it as much as the next. It's not like their score is awful, and maybe you will enjoy the story more than they will.

Silly gameAr1431d ago

No, it goes to show that PSU is an awful site and they have been for a while. It's not just the score, but their content in general is trash.

Grievous1431d ago

Well Ratchet & Clank is not really a story heavy game. It aint no The Last of US.

gamer78041431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

Having an awful story like tlou2 would bring ratchet and clank down lower… I’d rather it do what it excels at good lighthearted fun gameplay.

NecrumOddBoy1431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

PSU has a history of harsher reviews but it’s reviewer dependent. 7.5 just because of story is a pretty big gig.

Ninver1430d ago

Probably going against the grain for clicks. Covid must have sucked their pockets dry.

CrimsonWing691431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

Look, I get the whole “sanitized” story being a bummer, but to give it a 7.5 because of that? I dunno… I mean a good story is a good story dumbed down for kids or not.

garos821431d ago

its a video game not a movie. a story is a bonus. ive played tons of awful storied games that were fun as hell.

sagapo1431d ago

Certain games rely on a good story and certain gamers enjoy those games. Detroit Become Human or TLOU are a fine example imo. But not every game needs a good story to be fun, that is true.

garos821431d ago

the last of us actually has amazing gameplay. the story is a bonus. Detroit has suprisingly good gameplay to me also, although yes the story is what carried that game, it was still at least fun to play. Cant say the same thing about until dawn which was an actual bore, even though the story seemed interesting

Taero1430d ago (Edited 1430d ago )

On the other hand, this isn't an R rated game...I enjoyed the previous ratchet and clank games and my 7 year old enjoyed the 2016 remake/reboot, if this has a story that hits notes for both of us then I'd say they've done their job. Yes for those of us who grew up playing R+C we might be looking for a serious 'grown up' story, but how are they going to draw in all of the new generations to continue playing their games if they're marketing solely to us? If you're writing a game that can be followed and appeals to a wide age range then there are concessions you need to make and that's okay. It doesn't make the story bad :/

CrimsonWing691430d ago

I can’t say for sure since the only one I played was the PS4 game, but did the other games have more adult humor and innuendo? I know the titles were always built around adult humor. I can see how fans would get bummed from going from adult humor to kid humor, but even still I think that’s a personal preference and to dock a game points for it seems a bit much.

northpaws1431d ago

Excellent graphic and gameplay, and then give the game 7.5 because it doesn't like the story lol.

phoenixwing1431d ago

I wonder how he will review mario games if the story is suddenly so important to him over gameplay

Michiel19891431d ago

not saying the mario stories are any good, but in mario games narrative is not pushed in your face or takes only 20-30 seconds. at least the ones i played. Maybe the mario&luigi series is the exception. Here its a main part of the game.

Looking forward to playing ratchet & clank though, looks like one of sony's smash hits as usual from what ive seen so far.

Lexreborn21431d ago

Breath of the Wild had no real story and people jumped to give it a 10. Reviewers are just mad inconsistent

Michiel19891431d ago

@lex weird huh when reviews are opinion pieces?

--Onilink--1431d ago

Well, the site is playstation universe, so I dont get the impression he will be doing any non-playstation reviews any time soon

tombfan1431d ago

lol, true, Mario games bareeeeeeeelyyyy have a story (not a bad thing they excell on gameplay) and I think insomniac deserves merit for wanting to make great gameplay and put a story that's not just there as an excuse to make another game (like Mario... Peache's stolen by Bowser... again...)

badz1491431d ago

That's the accepted double standard for Nintendo games among journalist which is very sad and BS! To review Nintendo games, the story doesn't matter, even the graphics doesn't matter, gameplay only. But god forbid any other games to have a non-spectacular story, it's gonna be -2 just for the story alone like this review here. If this is made by Nintendo, it will get 20/10! Such is the double standards of these reviewers.

Michiel19891431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

and what about the other 9 reviews for each negative story review that give it praise for its story? stop complaining, its just one persons opinion. Are you really that desperate for everyone to have the same opinion about a certain aspect of a game as you?

the game isnt even out yet, are you gonna attack someone over a game that isnt out yet that you read in reviews that a lot of people gave the story a high rating. and without even having played the game you are gonna try and argue how good its story is?

JEECE1431d ago

Hmmm reminds me of another game from not too terribly long ago.

nRicosS1431d ago

Lol PSU, they gave biomutant 8.5

Taero1430d ago

JC and they're talking about poor stories? *Biomutant* got 10% higher than R+C:R?

How ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Did Dual Protagonists Right (And Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Didn’t)

Shaz from Pixel Swish: “Both Insomniac Games and Ubisoft have given us games with dual protagonists. However, where Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s duo feel exactly the same, Assassin’s Creed Shadow’s Yasuke and Naoe feel unique.”

They are exactly the same because it's another version of Ratchet within the multiverse. It's not Ratchet himself or a female version of him but it's someone else who's taken his place / role within that Universe.

The_Hooligan32d ago

Agreed! A better comparison take would have been between AC Syndicate and AC Shadows.

gold_drake34d ago

with ratchet, they are the same, they play the exact same.

im not even sure why this needs to be said, we all know.

isarai34d ago

They weren't trying to make them play differently, literally 2 versions of the same person. Wo ur saying they failed at something they never set out to do 🤨

Profchaos32d ago

What in the f who even thought of that concept and connect these two games that released years apart and have nothing to do with each other.

You could of said fuel protagonist vs other times where AC did duel protagonist or a game like GTA v that allows for on the fly switching

Like how desperate are they for clicks

Levii_9232d ago

Rivet's character was more useless and forced than Abby from TLOU2.

MULTIVERSESSSSSSS!!! Remember that trend people lol? Also remeber how a beloved vilain Dr Neferious was reduced to a braindead wimp and a parody of himself?

P_Bomb32d ago

“MULTIVERSESSSSSSS!!! Remember that trend people lol?”

It’s still going on. Especially @ Marvel.

Our First Look At FSR 4? AMD's New AI Upscaling Tech Is Impressive

DigitalFoundry : Running on AMD's new Radeon 9070-series GPUs at CES 2025, a machine learning upscaling demo of Sony's Ratchet and Clank is almost certainly FSR 4 AI upscaling - and as it's running on Ratchet and Clank - our 'go to game' for AI upscaling quality tests, we could really put the tech through its paces. Oliver and Alex are at the show - and this is their report.

They're saying better than PSSR! Impressive.. guess it's really close to Nvidia's solution. I'm interested in seeing how the 9070XT or whatever their highest end card will perform, we already know AMD are only aiming for the mid range (or upper mid range) with these new cards but it will still be interesting to see how they compare to a 5070Ti on price/performance.

But certain apps don't play well with AMD that do with Nvidia cards, shame because these cards could be great/price performance.. but not an issue for pure gamers.

883119d ago

Visually it may well be similar to DLSS, but they were quick to point out that they do not have any actual performance data at this point. Time will tell, but it is definitely promising and good to see them impressing.

Psychonaut85119d ago

Interesting. Since AMD is largely behind PSSR, they’ve now sort of have two different upscalers in play. Curious to see how it all pans out.

piroh166d ago

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic165d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23165d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1165d ago (Edited 165d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger156d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.
