One of Sony’s biggest arguments in defense of the PS3’s struggles during its first few years on the market has been that they are in this race for the long run. Sony continually says that its system has the most potential and will, in the end, have the best looking games. Normally, this talk would be dismissible as PR hype: of course PS3 games are going to look better in a few years, Sony, but, really, how much better can they get? PR folks are known to hype up things to a point they can never attain.

However, ever since developer Naughty Dog said they were only using 30 or 40% of the PS3’s potential, Sony’s claims have gained credence. But then came another shocker: in the latest IGN Play Beyond podcast, editor Jeff Haynes said that Killzone 2, which seems like it will be the best looking console shooter ever released, only uses about 60% of the PS3’s power. Not only is this a second opinion, but it also comes from a third-party, less biased source than an internal Sony developer.

So really, if Haynes’ claims can be taken as at least somewhat accurate, the full power of the Playstation 3 is huge, especially considering how great Killzone 2 looks.
