It looks like Battlefield 2021 will be playable on both last-gen and current-gen consoles confirmed by EA.
I'll skip consoles this time and just get on pc
So unfortunate the game is on last generation consoles also.
It never ends. Maybe by Holiday 2022 we’ll get true next gen games.
Battlefield 4 was on both last and current gen consoles, they cut back on the game considerably to make it work on last gen consoles while the current gen version was the full package and considered one of the best games in the series, if they make similar cuts then i don't see what the issue is.
Dude the majority of people can’t get the next gen consoles so all they got is the last gen consoles. Too much money 💰 to skip on. There will be a shortage of PS5/Xbox Series X until mid 2022.
given the shortage of components... they cant push a version only to a platform that is unavailable to the masses. So keeping things cross gen for a while longer makes sense. I'm not much of a BF/CoD fan but i get their reasoning to keeping 8th gen alive and kicking.
BF4 on PC is great i still play it to this day on a weekly basis.
PC is always the way to go with FPS. Keyboard/mouse FTW
Not to mention practically guaranteed high hz goodness if you have a 1440p screen and a high end GPU for them high frames.
I accept playing FPS with a controller, for console exclusives, but I would never opt for it over mouse/keyboard otherwise.
Keyboard and mouse is also available on console.....
@stotty Depending on how it's supported. I can, technically, play every PC game on a controller, but the results vary in many ways.
Still going to be hampered by last gen development eh.....sigh. I've moved on. The only games I will be playing on my series x or ps5 that a last gen are games in my backlog. I will make an exception for Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War....basically I would make that exception for Sony exclusives, exclusively. Unless Battlefield for pc and next gen consoles offers something truly unique in gameplay (like more players in the map, more destruction in the environment, larger environments, etc etc) and not just better visuals, it's a hard pass for me.
@vegamyster I guess you forgot the abundance of launch issues that came with bf4 too?
Antnee534, Smart move!!!
Wow. Massive dissapointment...
You thought EA would skip out on money?
To be fair, there are not many third party games that only ship on the next gen consoles right now and probably through the rest of this year.
You're right. What was I thinking 😂🙄
Just give me option of crossplay between xbox/PS5.Dotn wanna deal with hackers on PC
At least hackers can typically be banned on PC, CronusMAX users can't be detected at all on console.
I also agree should not be cross play with pc. Its clear why they do it it gives the pc game extra life as player count drops Considerably I say let them cheat amougnst each other
Lmao y’all act like cronus zen isn’t a thing and that there’s very much a console aim bot with these devices
Not a huge surprise, there are barely any next-gen consoles out there.
Lol the PS5 versions of Hitman 3, Outriders, and Resident Evil Village have already outsold their PS4 counterparts, and there are only around 9 million PS5s sold (7.8 mil at the end of March + 5 weeks of 200kish). Even if the chip situation doesn't improve much, there could be close to 25 million current gen consoles sold (I'm not calling 8 year old machines current gen, they are last gen) by the time Battlefield launches (assuming Novemberish), and they will be the people actually buying games. EA had a chance to differentiate themselves from COD and get back on track by really focusing on these new machines, but instead they are chasing the Warzone teenagers still on old machines. I'm sure that will go as well as anyone would expect.
Regardless of how next gen games are selling, PS4 and XB1 are still 150-200m potential customers - that’s too big of a market for EA to ignore. We’re likely going to see the big publishers continue to launch cross gen games for a while. It doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with it - I can’t wait until we get truly next gen games that push these boxes (because we aren’t currently) - but it’s the reality of the situation. 9 million potential customers is nothing compared to 115m+ potential customers. Companies go wherever the dollar bills are.
Ofc ps5 users have nothing else to play.
Where are you getting your information? Whenever I try to look up sales for even just Res 8, everything is being lumped together with PS4 and PS5.
Ps5 has only a handful of nextgen games, it doesn't take a genius to figure out the numbers here .
But 25 million people who are excited and actually buying games is a better option than 150 million dusty Netflix/Fortnite machines. A PS4 is not a living entity; if the person who has it isn't buying new games, it's irrelevant. Why do you think the original Titanfall wasn't a big deal on the 360? Way more people had 360s than Xbox Ones in 2014, and multiplayer games had obviously sold well there before. It's because the people who weren't upgrading weren't buying new games; they were sticking to FIFA/COD/MADDEN/GTA. Now thanks to Battle Royales the group of 1-2 game casuals is bigger than it was then. This is to say nothing of the fact that Battlefield could have established themselves as the multiplayer game specifically for the new consoles, which is a better marketing opportunity than anything they have now.
I just bought RE8 and I'm getting both Mass Effect and Life is Strange Remastered for PS4.
People are still buying games on last gen, there are masses and masses of people who are not able to get their hands on next-gen consoles, both due to price and lack of stock (amongst other reasons). A big company like EA wants to maximize their revenue and profits, and development costs for them to support PS4/XB1 are minimal, so they will support them to get access to that wider market. As for Titanfall on 360... it was a big deal on 360? A quick search reveals 71% of it's sales were on XB360...
yeah 71% of the launch week sales in the UK. You didn't even read your own search or you deceptively left that juicy tidbit out. TitanFall sold 10 million copies across Xbox 1, 360, and PC. No way did an old system, 360, sell 7 million of those lifetime. Jeece is absolutely right. The rabid fans are primarily the early adopters with 120 game attach rates. Every major game released this year with have better sales on current consoles over last gen counterparts. Doubt it? Let's revisit this topic again in early 2022 shall we? Now I agree with you about cross-gen and the greed of publishers. All will do it. Just this whole argument of prior install bases is no longer a debate at all when RE Village sales have harpooned it - more copies sold on an install base of 8 mil vs. 116 mil.
Yeah. UK sales are useful when they are the only data available, which frequently now they are, but we also know that Titanfall was the #1 game on NPD the month it released in the US on PC and XONE, but on 360 it didn't even chart (while the 360 version of Minecraft did) https://venturebeat.com/201... Vgchartz also confirms XONE version sold way better. Obviously that site has issues with undercounting now due to digital being bigger, but it uses retailer estimates, so it's better than nothing, and it's certainly useful for comparing a game's sales by platform, even if the absence of digital prevents in from being useful for overall sales. Honestly I'm starting to think none of the Cross-gen advocates even believe in the install base argument anymore. I think they personally just haven't gotten new consoles yet, so they don't want to accept the idea that most of the hardcore have already moved on.
You know and to think devs complained early on that PS4 and X1 were underpowered bottlenecked and the super outdated CPU chip set. Sony and MS release machines that fix that problem but yet here are still tied down to lower end machines. Yep, PS4 and X1 are so problematic they just can't get rid of those consoles /s
Yep. Just like how all these devs NEEDED Sony to allow crossplay, and then when Sony allowed it, half of them changed their tune to "maybe in the future."
In this big epic/apple court case going on at the minute the spotlight was put on Sony in reference to all the cross play shenanigans. Official Sony documents were made public showing exactly how much Sony charge for use of cross play on their platform. And it’s waaaaay harsh
Target platforms for games is more about the user base then the capabilities of the machine. Between PS4 and XBO there is about a 200+ million user base. PS5 and X|S might have a 20-25 million user base by November. It just makes sense to deliver the game on both this gen and last gen consoles.
Why didn't they release BF4 on the Wii then? It had a huge install base. Why didn't Titanfall become a hit on 360, when there were 85+ million 360s and probably fewer than 10 million Xbox Ones? Why did MGSV sell 19-1 on PS4/XONE compared to PS3/360 when the older consoles had a 100 million-ish advantage in install base? Why did Hitman 3 on PS5 double the PS4 version's sales 2 months after PS5 launched?
@Jeece Hmmmm. I don't remember saying anything about sales in my post..... Let me go back and look..... Nope, nothing about sales. There are lots of reasons why games don't sell well on a given platform. In Titanfall and MGS's case I bought Titanfall on XBO because I felt that would be the best experience, and I bought MGS on PS4 because I feel it is synonymous with PS and wanted the trophies on my PS gamer tag rather then XB even though XB is my primary gaming platform.. BF4 sold well on multi-generational consoles. Personally, I bought it on PC, because BF to me is a PC franchise. Plays so much better with PC and mouse/keyboard!
At this point I want them to start talking about PS6, because I'm convinced the only time they're going to make games designed around PS5 is when it means they are gimping them for the next gen.
I think at most next year will be the last year for cross-gen games.... at least for most of the publishers. Especially seeing your point with next gen versions of Hitman 3 selling more than PS4 etc. If the Next gen versions are already selling more then there's no reason to put the extra funds into working on getting the game on a older system but that's just my opinion.
Seems that they are building different versions. Next-gen version with 128 players, and current-gen with 64 players. The same is true for destruction and such.
This seems like the best possible scenario; that the old versions are actually basically a different game (sort of like BF3 on PS3/360 vs the PC version).
Why you being downvoted?
@GameZenith Because there's a group of people on here who inexplicably want games to be designed around ancient hardware in perpetuity. So anytime I point out that the PS5 version of a game outsold the PS4 version, that game sales on old hardware always nosedive when new consoles release, or just generally point out the disadvantages of cross-gen, they downvote.
Crap... that knocks the hype down a peg. I know it’s hard to get a next gen console right now and it’s kind of selfish for me to feel the way do (because I got both day one) but damn I can’t help it. After playing returnal, seeing ratchet, and trying demon souls.... then playing everything else cross gen... it’s just a difference to real next gen. Ground up next gen. I’ve had a taste and it was glorious.
Huge pass. The previous iteration has already damaged the series. Not making it next gen only is offputting.
Exactly. The Cross-gen move might have a little more weight if the series still had the momentum from 4 and 1 (some people mad about 5 now try to lump 1 with 5 but at the time it was huge, and still retains a good community), because huge mainstream games are the only games that don't nosedive in sales on last gen consoles after the current gen consoles launch. But after 5 they aren't in that tier of games anymore. By firmly establishing themselves as the ground up shooter for PS5/XSX, EA could have had a way to shake the negative image of 5 off. But instead they want to chase casuals on the old machines who are just going to shrug and keep playing Warzone.
I mean it’s only logical to expand the playability of the game so that everyone can play. I think this is also due to the lack of New gen consoles on the market. Perhaps we’d get more new gen exclusives in the near future (year or two).
lol This followed by the article "Battlefield Will Lead Up to “Incredible Live Service for the Future”" You can't even use the phrase, I'm cautiously optimistic because It's published by EA
Lol already the naysayers. . . .battlefield 4 was crossgen. . .and on ps4 xbox1 it was damn good.
I booted up bf4 on my ps4 recently, played for only 10 minutes because it had 20fps max :( Not to mention that the resolution is 720p. Hope this will not be the case on ps5
Lol it's not 20fps, your PS4 is broken or it'd be lag if you're playing multiplayer.
Um. Bf4 is 60 on ps4. . .and 720p . . .10 years ago on a launch title on a system launch? Lol are you really making that arugment? Try harder lol even bfv doesnt do 720p why would battlefield next gen do it?
Ok, i was wrong about 720p, it’s 900p, still not full hd
Expectations confirmed lowered.
I'd hope for more ambitious approaches from EA into this year
I don't get the big deal.. this is the norm for two years or longer after a new generation starts, lol. There's still PS3 games I'm catching up on.
No it isn't. Sony releasing Horizon as a cross-gen game in 2021 would be the equivalent of Uncharted being cross-gen PS2/PS3. This fixation on cross-gen is new.
I am so tired of cross gen
Next gen my arse, greedy lying peices of shit.
EA are not going to miss out on the 170m install base on last gen consoles even if it dumbs down there game massively…
Even if there were new consoles readily available I wouldn't have one yet because of things like this. 95% of the games coming out can still be played on last gen consoles. This happens every generational transition but it seems to be worse this time. I'm waiting for a killer app that is truly new gen that I can't play on old consoles before I even think about getting a PS5 or Xbox. My most anticipated game of the year drops May 25th, Biomutant, and I don't think there's even going to be a true new gen version. It's unfortunate that this crossgen issue seems like it's going to last so long this time but it's still hard to get the new consoles anyway so at least those who can't get one can still play the latest games.
They would be silly not to with the size of the player base on last gen consoles. Depends how much work they've put into the differences between the versions to how much impact it will have, it doesn't mean that it's definitely going to be limited. Remember that they'll also want as high a player base as possible on PC also, so they can't go to over the top.
Lol these hipsters will never understand. They actually beleive these companies in the business of making money should ignore almost 200+ million customers for the 15 or so million next gen owners. Its the same as pc game works across various hardware power levels never hear a peep about "cross gen" on pc because they know its a moot point
Given its ea did anyone actually expect them to make a next gen only game they won't do anything without looking at the install base it's why they ignored the Wii U and the Vita. Even Titanfall was initially a Xbox only franchise because EA had the belief that the Xbox one would surpass the PS4 in sales prior to the console launch simply based on how the 360 / PS3 sold EA is a company that only looks at numbers not potential.
Covid has relay done a number on the gaming industry. I'm willing to bet anything that the price of this last gen game will have a next gen price...
WACK! .. let the old gen go..
Wuch a bad call from greedy EA. Instead of thinking forward, the "next gen" Battlefield will now be held back because of last gen. PC will not get a PC optimized game (engine and UI) and the new console gen will be unoptimized and riddled with bugs.
