Battlefield 2021 Confirmed for Last-Gen and Current-Gen Consoles

It looks like Battlefield 2021 will be playable on both last-gen and current-gen consoles confirmed by EA.

The story is too old to be commented.

I'll skip consoles this time and just get on pc

_SilverHawk_33d ago

So unfortunate the game is on last generation consoles also.

Jin_Sakai33d ago

It never ends. Maybe by Holiday 2022 we’ll get true next gen games.

Vegamyster33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Battlefield 4 was on both last and current gen consoles, they cut back on the game considerably to make it work on last gen consoles while the current gen version was the full package and considered one of the best games in the series, if they make similar cuts then i don't see what the issue is.

DFresh33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Dude the majority of people can’t get the next gen consoles so all they got is the last gen consoles.
Too much money 💰 to skip on.
There will be a shortage of PS5/Xbox Series X until mid 2022.

darthv7232d ago

given the shortage of components... they cant push a version only to a platform that is unavailable to the masses. So keeping things cross gen for a while longer makes sense. I'm not much of a BF/CoD fan but i get their reasoning to keeping 8th gen alive and kicking.

anubusgold32d ago

BF4 on PC is great i still play it to this day on a weekly basis.

PC is always the way to go with FPS. Keyboard/mouse FTW

Fntastic33d ago

Not to mention practically guaranteed high hz goodness if you have a 1440p screen and a high end GPU for them high frames.

TheRealTedCruz33d ago

I accept playing FPS with a controller, for console exclusives, but I would never opt for it over mouse/keyboard otherwise.

DJStotty32d ago

Keyboard and mouse is also available on console.....

TheRealTedCruz32d ago

Depending on how it's supported. I can, technically, play every PC game on a controller, but the results vary in many ways.

Still going to be hampered by last gen development eh.....sigh. I've moved on. The only games I will be playing on my series x or ps5 that a last gen are games in my backlog. I will make an exception for Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War....basically I would make that exception for Sony exclusives, exclusively. Unless Battlefield for pc and next gen consoles offers something truly unique in gameplay (like more players in the map, more destruction in the environment, larger environments, etc etc) and not just better visuals, it's a hard pass for me.

D3TH_D33LR32d ago

@vegamyster I guess you forgot the abundance of launch issues that came with bf4 too?

Ddog4532d ago

Antnee534, Smart move!!!

Wow. Massive dissapointment...

annoyedgamer33d ago

You thought EA would skip out on money?

NeoGamer23233d ago

To be fair, there are not many third party games that only ship on the next gen consoles right now and probably through the rest of this year.

jamesclark199132d ago

You're right. What was I thinking 😂🙄

Majin-vegeta33d ago

Just give me option of crossplay between xbox/PS5.Dotn wanna deal with hackers on PC

Parasoth33d ago

At least hackers can typically be banned on PC, CronusMAX users can't be detected at all on console.

Father__Merrin32d ago

I also agree should not be cross play with pc. Its clear why they do it it gives the pc game extra life as player count drops Considerably I say let them cheat amougnst each other

D3TH_D33LR32d ago

Lmao y’all act like cronus zen isn’t a thing and that there’s very much a console aim bot with these devices

Orchard33d ago

Not a huge surprise, there are barely any next-gen consoles out there.

JEECE33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Lol the PS5 versions of Hitman 3, Outriders, and Resident Evil Village have already outsold their PS4 counterparts, and there are only around 9 million PS5s sold (7.8 mil at the end of March + 5 weeks of 200kish). Even if the chip situation doesn't improve much, there could be close to 25 million current gen consoles sold (I'm not calling 8 year old machines current gen, they are last gen) by the time Battlefield launches (assuming Novemberish), and they will be the people actually buying games. EA had a chance to differentiate themselves from COD and get back on track by really focusing on these new machines, but instead they are chasing the Warzone teenagers still on old machines. I'm sure that will go as well as anyone would expect.

Orchard33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Regardless of how next gen games are selling, PS4 and XB1 are still 150-200m potential customers - that’s too big of a market for EA to ignore.

We’re likely going to see the big publishers continue to launch cross gen games for a while.

It doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with it - I can’t wait until we get truly next gen games that push these boxes (because we aren’t currently) - but it’s the reality of the situation.

9 million potential customers is nothing compared to 115m+ potential customers. Companies go wherever the dollar bills are.

chiefJohn11732d ago

Ofc ps5 users have nothing else to play.

TheRealTedCruz32d ago

Where are you getting your information? Whenever I try to look up sales for even just Res 8, everything is being lumped together with PS4 and PS5.

JackBNimble32d ago

Ps5 has only a handful of nextgen games, it doesn't take a genius to figure out the numbers here .

But 25 million people who are excited and actually buying games is a better option than 150 million dusty Netflix/Fortnite machines. A PS4 is not a living entity; if the person who has it isn't buying new games, it's irrelevant. Why do you think the original Titanfall wasn't a big deal on the 360? Way more people had 360s than Xbox Ones in 2014, and multiplayer games had obviously sold well there before. It's because the people who weren't upgrading weren't buying new games; they were sticking to FIFA/COD/MADDEN/GTA. Now thanks to Battle Royales the group of 1-2 game casuals is bigger than it was then.

This is to say nothing of the fact that Battlefield could have established themselves as the multiplayer game specifically for the new consoles, which is a better marketing opportunity than anything they have now.

Yui_Suzumiya33d ago

I just bought RE8 and I'm getting both Mass Effect and Life is Strange Remastered for PS4.

Orchard33d ago

People are still buying games on last gen, there are masses and masses of people who are not able to get their hands on next-gen consoles, both due to price and lack of stock (amongst other reasons).

A big company like EA wants to maximize their revenue and profits, and development costs for them to support PS4/XB1 are minimal, so they will support them to get access to that wider market.

As for Titanfall on 360... it was a big deal on 360? A quick search reveals 71% of it's sales were on XB360...

CBaoth32d ago

yeah 71% of the launch week sales in the UK. You didn't even read your own search or you deceptively left that juicy tidbit out. TitanFall sold 10 million copies across Xbox 1, 360, and PC. No way did an old system, 360, sell 7 million of those lifetime. Jeece is absolutely right. The rabid fans are primarily the early adopters with 120 game attach rates. Every major game released this year with have better sales on current consoles over last gen counterparts. Doubt it? Let's revisit this topic again in early 2022 shall we?

Now I agree with you about cross-gen and the greed of publishers. All will do it. Just this whole argument of prior install bases is no longer a debate at all when RE Village sales have harpooned it - more copies sold on an install base of 8 mil vs. 116 mil.

JEECE32d ago

Yeah. UK sales are useful when they are the only data available, which frequently now they are, but we also know that Titanfall was the #1 game on NPD the month it released in the US on PC and XONE, but on 360 it didn't even chart (while the 360 version of Minecraft did) Vgchartz also confirms XONE version sold way better. Obviously that site has issues with undercounting now due to digital being bigger, but it uses retailer estimates, so it's better than nothing, and it's certainly useful for comparing a game's sales by platform, even if the absence of digital prevents in from being useful for overall sales.

Honestly I'm starting to think none of the Cross-gen advocates even believe in the install base argument anymore. I think they personally just haven't gotten new consoles yet, so they don't want to accept the idea that most of the hardcore have already moved on.

AngelicIceDiamond33d ago

You know and to think devs complained early on that PS4 and X1 were underpowered bottlenecked and the super outdated CPU chip set. Sony and MS release machines that fix that problem but yet here are still tied down to lower end machines. Yep, PS4 and X1 are so problematic they just can't get rid of those consoles /s

JEECE33d ago

Yep. Just like how all these devs NEEDED Sony to allow crossplay, and then when Sony allowed it, half of them changed their tune to "maybe in the future."

poppatron33d ago

In this big epic/apple court case going on at the minute the spotlight was put on Sony in reference to all the cross play shenanigans. Official Sony documents were made public showing exactly how much Sony charge for use of cross play on their platform. And it’s waaaaay harsh

NeoGamer23233d ago

Target platforms for games is more about the user base then the capabilities of the machine. Between PS4 and XBO there is about a 200+ million user base. PS5 and X|S might have a 20-25 million user base by November.

It just makes sense to deliver the game on both this gen and last gen consoles.

JEECE33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Why didn't they release BF4 on the Wii then? It had a huge install base.

Why didn't Titanfall become a hit on 360, when there were 85+ million 360s and probably fewer than 10 million Xbox Ones?

Why did MGSV sell 19-1 on PS4/XONE compared to PS3/360 when the older consoles had a 100 million-ish advantage in install base?

Why did Hitman 3 on PS5 double the PS4 version's sales 2 months after PS5 launched?

NeoGamer23233d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Hmmmm. I don't remember saying anything about sales in my post..... Let me go back and look..... Nope, nothing about sales.

There are lots of reasons why games don't sell well on a given platform.

In Titanfall and MGS's case I bought Titanfall on XBO because I felt that would be the best experience, and I bought MGS on PS4 because I feel it is synonymous with PS and wanted the trophies on my PS gamer tag rather then XB even though XB is my primary gaming platform..

BF4 sold well on multi-generational consoles. Personally, I bought it on PC, because BF to me is a PC franchise. Plays so much better with PC and mouse/keyboard!
