How deep are MS pockets to keep devs on their system? Xbox owners don´t buy games, MS keeps filling pubs pockets with GamePass deals.

I wonder how many time and money Satya is willing to throw into a major problem for the division.

Things are not looking good and disagree all you want but if Xbox owners aren´t buying games, many pubs will abandon ship.

jukins1081d ago

They have to be overpaying them a ton. Especially at the rate games sell on ps5.
I think how much Satya is willing to spend depends on how gamepass turns out. As much as they say they want gamepass everywhere the fact is the overwhelming majority of subs will be actual xbox console owners.

Concertoine1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

Edit: My mistake, i totally misunderstood what you guys were talking about

I actually don't disagree with Gamepass in principle, if it was more geared towards Xbox exclusives + older games from other publishers I wouldn't have as much a fear of it. But when a game like Outriders ends up day 1 on gamepass, that makes me fear for where we're going.

neutralgamer19921081d ago (Edited 1081d ago )

You have a very valid point because I see this comment a lot why should I buy this game for full price when I can just wait for gamepass. I keep telling people if that's the mindset of Xbox gamers a lot of these publishers will not support the console because they want to sell you the game at full price because that's when they made the most profit

The way I see Microsoft fixing this issue is by buying more publishers. Sadly they may acquire a big publisher and make it exclusive to their console(like they did with Bethesda)-(the reason I say sadly because I don't think neither Sony or Ms should be buying big publishers. We only have hand full of big publishers anyway) if ms starts buying it will have a ripple affect and Sony will have to buy some themselves. I don't think gamers win

But I think the reality of the situation is Ms wants more studios and buying a big publisher helps that. They want Netflix model where gamers pay one fee for all games and Sony wants more traditional gaming model

By end of this generation gaming industry will be in very different landscape. I see medium size publishers being bought out

Chevalier1081d ago

Netflix will finally be turning a profit late this year. Not sure how MS thinks Gamepass can become like Netflix. Netflix is only turning a profit now with what 200 million subscribers? They're pulling like $2 billion a month. That's probably more than Xbox Gamepass for the year

neutralgamer19921080d ago

Chevalier

Seriously Netflix just started making profit?

Petebloodyonion1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

The same could apply to any game at all.
Why should I buy Returnal at 70$ when I can wait for black Fridays and have it for 29$ or perhaps free with PS+?
Why should I go to the theater or pay a premium price to see the next Disney movie when I can wait 8 months and have it release on Disney+?

PPL are acting that all games are released on Gamepass day 1 and they are staying forever
when it's a minority of games that are released on day 1 (aside from MS games).

My opinion is MS wants to use Gamepass to commit ppl to the Xbox ecosystem and increasing the userbase to an insane amount of ppl thus forcing 3rd party to think Xbox when making a game while MS get's money from all transactions including MTS.
In case ppl are forgetting Epic made close to 1 billion $ with barely 1 game How much money did you think Sony made with that?
Gta?
COD?

neutralgamer19921080d ago

All Ms made games and many 3rd party games. It's all about expectations. You get people use to just paying subscriptions chances are many would happily play only those games and wait for others to show up

Petebloodyonion1080d ago

"You get people use to just paying subscriptions chances are many would happily play only those games and wait for others to show up"

And if you look, Sony gave about 40+ games for free or PS+since the release of Ps5 and I doubt it impacts the sales of PS5 games.
18 games with Ps+ collection
10 games with Stay at home initiative
at least 12 games with PS+ since the release of the console
Astrobot.

jukins1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

Netflix is a weird one. While "profitable " they are burning through their cash reserves at a rapid clip. And missed sub growth two quarters in a row. And then when you have players like disney+ who has so much legacy and new content coming theyve, in less than two years, have half of netflix sub numbers while being basially all profit.

Movies though you can put 50 million in and get a return in as little as a year for a good movie. Games though take soo long. Bethesda alone was 7 billion and thats just one developer and besides legacy sales, which have all but plateud, bethesda isnt makeing money for microsoft add in 23 other studios whos profits will have to be split between all its an interesting scenario. Gamepass is a good deal but clearly sony and nintendos traditional way is working at a much better rate. I dont know unless somehow microsoft can substantially increase its install base gamepass probably wont work that far into the future. Guess we'll have to see once they start releasing games

neutralgamer19921080d ago

Petebloodyonion

While that's true Sony doesn't offer their brand new games day one on any service. That's the biggest difference. When the new fallout or elder scrolls come out and Xbox gamers find out they don't have to buy them they can just play them because they will stay permanently on game pass why would they spend the money. And when you have those big games releasing day one of service a lot of gamers will simply say we will wait for others to show up on gamepads because sooner or later most games will end up on the service

It also depends how much money Microsoft is willing to spend because this service will not become profitable (by a huge margin) anytime soon

Like my first comment I really believe that by the end of this generation a lot of these medium size publishers will be bought by these console makers

We will be left with the top 5 greedy publishers who no one wanna buy

ABizzel11080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

It's not a comment anymore.

There was an entire poll done on an Xbox group on Facebook with over 50,000 votes, and the majority clearly stated they'd rather wait for a game to come to GamePass than buy a game new.

Then there was also another poll that asked if they would buy a game at full price if it was also on GamePass to support the developer before it left GamePass. I'll have to find this one, but nearly 60% said They wouldn't buy a game if it was on there because they're paying for GP which supports the developer, with the next largest group being in around 34% being willing to buy a game as long as they liked it and it was leaving Gamepass before they beat it or had multiplayer.

Chevalier1080d ago

" Seriously Netflix just started making profit?"

Yep barring some unforeseen circumstance they'll be in the black for the 1st time apparently. They spend I think $10 billion in content yearly.

@ Pete Onion

Really? Sony made $4 billion on Fate Stay on Mobile alone. Spiderman, TLOU, Ghost of Tsushima all drove quite a bit in sales. Multiple billions for each release so yeah Playstation is fine.

Since most of Xbox game franchises have gone down in sales it makes sense to put it on a service. Playstation games are breaking records though so it's a dumb idea to put it on a service in comparison

lodossrage1080d ago

@Chevalier

Netflix only turns a profit now because of the influx of people that came during the pandemic.

Don't be shocked if they go right back to having to borrow again once the pandemic is full dealt with.

Chevalier1080d ago

"18 games with Ps+ collection
10 games with Stay at home initiative
at least 12 games with PS+ since the release"

Its not the same though. These aren't day 1 releases. They've already made their sales and released before to profit before being given away.

The reason why Disney Plus makes money is because Disney already profited from their theatre, merchandise and bluray/dvd sales. Whereas Netflix has an uphill battle. Gamepass is closer to Netflix than it is to Disney Plus. It would probably take awhile to break even

derek1080d ago Show
Petebloodyonion1080d ago

@Neutral
I agree that having your game day 1 on Gamepass will have some impact on the sale of that game if there's no reason to return to the game but I think a lot of ppl are blowing this out of proportion like believing that all ppl own Gamepass or that 0 ppl rent a game like TLOU to finish it quickly or nobody buy and return the game to Gamestop after complete for credit thus denying a sale.
Basically just saying that you can easily play a game for 15$ if the game is physical.

@chevalier
Your logic about Ghost, Tlou, or any exclusives being the reason for Sony's profit is flawed
If it was the case then Nintendo would by far be killing Sony and Ms in profit since they have the best attach rate for 1st party games and unlike others, they rarely drop the price in the year to increase sales numbers, yet despite having an install base twice as big of Xbox 1 and selling more 1st party title compared to Sony they have the same profit as Microsoft.
https://twistedvoxel.com/xb...
So where come all that extra money that Sony made? Surely not the Ps+ subscription nor the countless of Mts that ppl spent on Fortnite/ Cod, Fifa, and GTA?

And since all MS games went down and sales... Yeah, I'm sure you have the proof that MS sales went down tks to Gamepass but I'm gonna ask the same question that I never have an answer from others: Who bought the millions of copies of crappy Sea of Thieves at full price when the game was launch on Steam in 2020 despite the game been on Gamepass on PC since the beginning?
https://www.pcgamesn.com/se...
Now like I said to Neutral I won't deny that yes releasing a game day1 on Gamepass will affect the sales of the same game.
But like I said a lot of time Is MS trying to make money out of a day 1 game (that they will still make money by having MTS and others) or they are trying to increase the number of subscriptions so the recurrent revenue becomes so large that it can easily absorb the cost?
And here's the difference between Gamepass and Netflix, The user can still buy games, DLC and MTS contrary to Netflix that you only rent the movie.

cd11080d ago

@neutralgamer1992

"Sony doesn't offer their brand new games day one on any service"

That's not true, I can think of two games that have come with PS+ at release on PS5 already - Oddworld Soulstorm and Destruction Allstars. It isnt a new thing either, Resogun came with PS+ at the PS4 release too.

DJStotty1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

Seriously, who says "i'll just wait for gamepass"? other than Sony fanboys that want the service to fail?

Out of everyone that i game with online, not 1 person i speak to has said they are waiting for a certain game to come to gamepass.

I preordered Outriders, it came to gamepass so i cancelled.
I preordered RE8

I have bought games in the past, that are now on gamepass, Doom Eternal, Metro but to name a few.

This false narrative needs to stop. Xbox gamers know that ALL 1st party will be coming to gamepass Day 1, all gamepass subscribers know that very few new 3rd party games come to the service on Day 1, yeah we get a few, but not many.

It will get worse for Xbox as its user base is getting used to gamepass. They will not want to buy games, they will get what the subscription provides.

For how long can Microsoft keep bleeding money to sustain that business model?

We will see.

Petebloodyonion1080d ago

And I'm sure you have some valid source that is backing your claims right?

Cause it's funny that despite all sales, free game giveaway and PS+ offering that Playstation are pullings
They are still able to sell more games.

UltimateRacer1080d ago

MS will only be able to sustain that model by buying more big studios or subs will increase to double the amount they are now, if neither of those happen and I hope buying big publishers out doesn’t happen then MS can’t sustain that model. it’s just like Sony and Jim Ryan stated that model isn’t sustainable.

cd11080d ago

Gamepass will simply get way more expensive over time. MS didn't get to being worth a Trillion dollars by being charitable.

Against its predecessor Gears 5 performed poorly too – with sales down 78 per cent on 2016’s Gears of War 4 it’s something of a flop in a box. That drop is well above the typical rate of decline we’d associate with digital shift over the last three years (15-20 per cent).***

But... according to the charts, XB owners do buy games. In fact they increased from 16% the previous report to 21% where as PS owners only increased from 30% to 33%. 5% growth is better than 3% and that is with services like Game pass as an option. With the way you talk, there should not have been any growth from XB users and it should be in steep decline.

1081d ago
Tacoboto1081d ago

PC experienced a sharp decline, is now below Xbox when for the quarter they used to be 2x higher.

Switch went from 4% below Xbox and is now 10% below.

Clearly Ubisoft should #CancelXbox

You're acting like Playstation doesn't have its own subscriptions for games. Only difference is Sony doesn't have to put its new games on there.

A 3 % increase through a much bigger (is it double?) console base vastly out weighs a 5% growth.

Are you sure you know math?

Xbox's proportion of revenue grew from 14% to 23% relative to the quarter.
PC's proportion shrunk from 30% to 21%
PS grew from 26 to 27%.

For the 12 month period they grew 5% at the same expense of PC's share.

1080d ago
Tacoboto1080d ago

I don't care.
These are Ubisoft numbers, for Ubisoft games, where Ubisoft had increased revenue for Xbox platforms, but people want to spin that somehow more money from Xbox players = less money from Xbox players.

neutralgamer19921080d ago

Tacoboto

You should care because next 12-24 months will be very crucial for Ms and gaming industry. GP has a future but not at it's current price and need a lot more subscriptions. It's a valid concern that many Xbox gamers may decided GP is good enough and they don't need to buy many games(not saying they are wrong in thinking that but gaming industry will not take liking to this)

Tacoboto1080d ago

Neutral - Despite increased membership in Game Pass, Xbox managed to grow its proportion of sales Year over Year with a major publisher. It's in the article, literally right there. 14% to 23% for the quarter. 16% to 21% for the year.

"It's a valid concern" - Please educate me in how 23% is worse than 14%.

Chevalier1080d ago

That's only the quarter though, most likely due to the launch of the new systems. If you look at the 12 month it dips below what you quoted. Its actually 33% for Playstation vs 21% for Xbox for the current year so far. Outside of the increase during the launch of Xbox its trending back down and by fiscal year end it will look similar to last year's fiscal year end. Playstation has been almost double over Xbox for almost the whole generation.

It looks like that's most likely going to continue. If you want to argue that then feel free to look at 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 etc and you'll see the trend of Playstation outselling Xbox almost double or more by percentage hasn't changed throughout the generation. So yeah I you want to say you know math then look for the trend over the years. It won't support your paper-thin argument. Plus based on the trends for the year already in that same report it looks like Xbox will dip again by years end.

Care to explain your comment regarding Gamepass and Ubisoft fiscal year results?
Like is there a mention of Gamepass in the article?

NeoGamer2321081d ago

I am not sure why they are pointing out PS revenue share in the article other then they are a PS fanboy.

If you look year over year, PS revenue as a percentage went up 3% from 30% to 33% while XB revenue went up 5% from 16% to 21%.

The numbers actually show that XB gained 2% more of Ubisoft's revenue as compared to the previous year.

Amazing how looking at numbers anyone can find a win. Therefore this is just a stupid article as usual. And yet another attempt by someone who calls themselves a journalist to try and market for PS.

Nyxus1080d ago

What is the bullshit exactly? Last time I checked 33% was a higher percentage than 21%.

Orchard1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

This is a terrible take...

"How deep are MS pockets to keep devs on their system? Xbox owners don´t buy games, MS keeps filling pubs pockets with GamePass deals."

They aren't deep at all - publishers don't get paid by Microsoft aside from the 30% store cut (same cut they get on PS) unless some form of exclusivity or marketing deal is involved, which is rare for most devs/IPs.

Xbox is profitable for devs/pubs, it makes up 16% of Ubisoft's sales, PS makes up 33%, Switch 11%. Revenue exceeds development costs, so why would Ubisoft (or any other publisher) give up 21% of their sales?

By your logic, Ubisoft are going to stop making games for Xbox and Switch and we'll only be able to get their games on Playstation. Obviously that is incorrect.

"I wonder how many time and money Satya is willing to throw into a major problem for the division."

Which major problem? Xbox is a profitable division of Microsoft, recently posted a 5bn dollar quarter, helps drive revenue into other parts of the business like Azure, and both Xbox and the parent company are doing great.

If you are trying to suggest that MS is going to kill Xbox, or publishers are going to stop making Xbox games, you are living in a fantasy land and/or fearmongering.

Pricey1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

"publishers don't get paid by Microsoft aside from the 30% store cut"

If gamepass is free (almost) what's 30% of 0. Of course Microsoft are subsidising publishers.

The point is when your competitors are increasing the publishers revenue year on year the publishers will want you to offset that with even greater subsidies. I can see more timed exclusives going to PlayStation because of this, and if Microsoft want to prevent that they're going to have to open their wallets.

Orchard1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

@Pricey Microsoft are subsidizing publishers for their games being in game pass, yes - obviously. They are NOT subsidizing non-gamepass games or 'normal' games if you want to call them that. You get your store cut from sales, that's it.

To your second point, Microsoft still makes up 21% of Ubisofts sales, they aren't about to bail on that. Their shareholders would ask what the hell they are doing.

Timed exclusives? No publisher makes titles exclusive (or timed exclusive) simply due to the number of sales on a platform. Exclusivity in any form only comes when the platform holder pays $$$. Think about it... PS is 33% of their sales, Xbox is 21%, if I am Ubisoft, why would I give up 21% of my sales/revenue just because I sell more on Sony? I would only do that if Sony is paying me enough that it would cover (and then some) that 21%... corporations don't opt to lose money over platform allegiances... they are businesses, not fanboys.

So both Sony and Microsoft have to open their wallets to get timed exclusivity, regardless of platform share.

(Also correction to my initial post, on store cuts, the publisher gets 70%, MS/Sony gets 30%).

Pricey1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

"Timed exclusives? No publisher makes titles exclusive (or timed exclusive) simply due to the number of sales on a platform. Exclusivity in any form only comes when the platform holder pays $$$. "

Agreed but Microsoft will have to pay more to get them or stop them. When Sony make an offer Microsoft will need to pay more to stop it. Because Sony already makes the publisher more they are in a better position to negotiate a lower price.

Sony have stated exclusives are more important than ever. Expect to see allot more timed exclusives coming to PlayStation.

Orchard1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

But that situation isn't new or anything different from today.

If MS/Sony wants a (timed) exclusive, they have to incentivize the partner with $$$, and then the other has to outbid if they want to beat them out.

This has been standard practice for years.

"Because Sony already makes the publisher more they are in a better position to negotiate a lower price."

Doesn't work like that, if I am Ubisoft, I'm not going to say "Okay we're going to lose $100m by not shipping on Xbox, but since you're a good platform and make up more of our sales, we're willing to negotiate and lower the price, so we'll sacrifice that $100m and you can pay us $50m, so we only lose $50m in the end".

That isn't how businesses operate - not long living, profitable ones anyway.

Do exclusives cost Microsoft more because they have to cover the Sony %? Probably, but they also have a LOT more money than Sony. So it's moot really.

Pricey1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

They might have more money but the question is how long are they prepared to take the loss on gamepass. They are paying money to publishers to begin with to get it on gamepass then they have to pay more to stop it being a PlayStation timed exclusive. Unless they can get the subscriptions high enough they aren't making profit. The question is how long have they got to get there? Took Netflix a while right? We can speculate but you don't know the answer and neither do I. I venture though for the reasons I've stated and the fact that game development is only getting more expensive that gamepass will become less desirable as time goes on. Prices will go up as Microsoft attempts to reclaim money lost on its exclusive games and other deals with publishers. A saturation point in subscriptions will appear due to that increased price and increasing competition in the PC and console space.

The only interesting tidbits I learned from this article
1) Despite what ppl think old games still matter because more than 50% of revenue coming from older titles
2) PlayStation is the biggest source of income for Ubisoft with 27% of the money coming from there.
3) MS is not far behind with 23% of the money coming from Xbox.
4) Xbox revenue went up from 14% of the share in Q4 2020 to 23% in Q4 2021.

gravedigger1080d ago

2) PlayStation is the biggest source of income for Ubisoft with 27% of the money coming from there.
3) MS is not far behind with 23% of the money coming from Xbox.

That's just for Q4. Since it is Q4, then also whole year is rounded. Ubisoft also showed a yearly

PlayStation: 33%
PC: 23%
Xbox: 21%
Switch: 11%
Mobile: 8%
Others: 4%
Stadia: 0%

Petebloodyonion1080d ago

You are right but if you took the 1yearly approach you see the exact same things
MS had a 16% share in 2019 they went up to 21%
PC had a 28% share in 2019 and they went down to 23%

I would suggest that the high cost of Pc component vs the low cost of the new console could be a factor explaining this change and it can also explain the huge Spike for Xbox in Q4
Also take note that in both approach the gain for Xbox is exactly the same as the loss for PC.

Petebloodyonion1080d ago

I just said that perhaps the high cost of PC parts right now vs the low cost of a console could (Keyword "could") explain why Ubisoft had a raise in profit in the Xbox category vs the PC category. ( just try to upgrade your pc for 500$)
I also pointed out that you see a perfect correlation between the 2 because if you take yearly result, Xbox gain
5% while PC lost 5%. Then if you take Q4 again they, again, exchange the same difference (9%)
It might be a coincidence but it still worth noting

@Pete

You're bad at math. Lol.

Like someone already pointed out. Playstation is currently 33% and Xbox is 21%. While Xbox is up the yearly number that's listed is 20/21. Newsflash 2021 is NOT over yet. By next year when their fiscal years ends the numbers for Xbox will be half or less compared to Playstation. It was the same for 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 etc. Its the same trend yearly. You can argue all you want about the temporary spike, but, thr trends don't lie.

Please educate me cause I do think that when you go from 16% in the year 2019 to 21% in the year 2020 it's called an increase!
Now I don't know why you need to point out that Sony made 33% vs Xbox 21% like an argument to counter something I said when I basically mentioned that we learned that Sony is still the top money draw for Ubisoft no matter how you look at the number (Q4 or yearly).
So I may suck at math but I'm still scratching my head about what's the purpose of your rant or why you need to speculate on the future numbers when the purpose of the article is about the current number.

", yet despite having an install base twice as big of Xbox 1 and selling more 1st party title compared to Sony they have the same profit as Microsoft."

Again you're wrong. Here's why. You claim Nintendo should he the king and yet Xbox equals them you know why?!

https://www.google.com/amp/...

Nintendo digital sales are pathetic. Nintendo has extremely low Eshop sales whereas Xbox does well with Xbox Live and Xbox store. Here just look how Playstation absolutely destroys Eshop.

As for Sony their 1st party sales are all pretty high. TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, GoW, Spiderman all made multiple billions each so no they're driving sales with 1st party games so they don't need to put them on a service.

Xbox does NOT compare to Playstation in ANY way.

Look at Playstations quarterly sales last year.

https://www.google.com/amp/...

This is the best quarter in the history of gaming. Playstation physical sales went up 49%. Digital sales almost at $4 billion is insane.

Also for idiots who think Sony only profits from Playstation.

https://www.resetera.com/th...

Think again.

https://www.google.com/amp/...

Playstation is bigger than BOTH Nintendo and ALL Xbox Game Divisions COMBINED. So again get your FACTS straight. Your argument is straight up wrong its so paper-thin.

"Please educate me cause I do think that when you go from 16% in the year 2019 to 21% in the year 2020 it's called an increase"

Look again. It's 16% for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 it's up to 21% is a temporary increase. 2021 sales are not complete yet because 2021 isn't over yet. This will roll for 3 more quarters so you saying its and increase is premature. If you look at 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 etc. its a yearly trend EVERY single year end Xbox has been half or less of Playstation (I.e. Playstation is literally double Xbox sales or more).

So again the increase you're pointing out is on 2020/2021. Again newsflash 2021 is not done yet. Ubisoft fiscal year ends 1st quarter of 2022. So you're extremely premature in your calculation. I.e the year ain't done so stop thinking the year Xbox is 21% overall. It's 21% for a quarter of sales ONLY. When the next 3 quarters role out Xbox will dip again. It will be half or less of Playstation when 2021 sales are complete. The trend from 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 etc will continue.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb19815h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein4h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.
