It still amazes me that Sony haven’t implemented a better solution here than developers having to implement it themselves and users having to upload and download in-game.

How so? Like I could not be subscribed to ps plus and still perform cross save. On top of that, ps4 saves can be moved to the ps5 free without cloud saving, via USB.
It wouldn't need them to make cloud saves free at all. Not saying i wouldn't want that, because I would im just wondering why it would force them to make it go free

By solvable at the OS level I meant by having the OS sync the saves to/from the cloud automatically in the background, like Steam & Xbox do. But that would then become a premium only feature for those subbed to PS+, so they'd sort of have to make them free for the feature to be really transparent & simple to use.

Could they still force non-subbed users to use USB? Sure, but the experience would suck and would be a step back from the import/export in-game process we have today (at least for consumers, developers don't want to have to implement cross-save systems, and some won't, resulting in a worse experience for us gamers).

But it's also 2021, cloud saves should be free anyway. Cloud storage is readily available, cheap, and save games are small.
