This is great and all, but I do hope Sony is still interested on bringing back PS Home to the PS5.

Godmars2901097d ago

If they were it would have continued on PS4.

PS Home was way ahead of its time. If they were to bring it back today I think it would explode, especially with the pandemic still limiting our outdoor lives.

That said they'd have to find ways to make it accessible to more people, e.g. PC & mobile to make sure it succeeds.

PS: the Dreams adaptation looks awesome!

Eidolon1097d ago

Hardware and network infrastructures are so capable, it's a surprise they haven't attempted to re-introduce something at least similar. It's a missed opportunity. Didn't they shut it down like years after PS4's release? I had a good time with it, It has way more potential now than ever.

Godmars2901096d ago

Thing is Home wasn't only Sony. It was content from many other companies. Companies that gave up and stopped supporting Home when Sony did, and aren't likely to recommit when Home was pretty much struggling in the first place.

gold_drake1097d ago

yeeh thats unlikely i think. pshome just didnt make them any real sort of profit. it was great while it lasted

Eidolon1097d ago (Edited 1097d ago )

Probably because it stayed on the PS3 and it was really bottlenecked. Now.. less loading times, asset load-in. More and better assets, bigger homes, better integrated media and games (in-PShome and launching), more community/social options and controls. And now PS VR and their line of headsets are more established.

PS3 was the issue, just gonna say it. It could have been a lot better on PS4, and much much more with PS5 and VR.

Do you remember the "Xi" PS Home quest? Where you had to solve a mystery with everyone. That was good, and there was definitely potential in Home. I also enjoyed the themed game areas, but having to download individual areas took far too long. My character also had Tekken gloves. I'd definitely be intrigued to see a Home Revamp on PS5, and I'm sure we might get something like it alongside PSVR2. I'm in.

ocelot071096d ago

Thing is though home was ahead of its times. I think it would do well these days as we are in the times of microtransactions.

DOMination-1097d ago

Sony should have made it part of the dashboard experience but in a way where it was not annoying to access anything. That way, forcing people to actually use it and explore. ie. You turn your Playstation on and you start in your own home, but right next to a digital PS so you're one button away from settings, starting a game etc.

In real life (as in, people who aren't on N4G every day), hardly anyone knew about it and those that did came to the same realisation as me.. a fantastic idea half baked in its implementation. It should have been mandatory for developers to make a room for their game (much like trophies are now mandatory)

If done properly it could have been a nice little earner for Sony whilst also being a cool UI for people who didn't care for it. I'd like to see it come back in the way I envisioned it but I suspect it's doomed in the same way everything else Phil Harrison every touches.

Sony just filed a trademark renewal for home, so your wish may end up granted: https://www.pushsquare.com/...

ocelot071096d ago

They did just renew the trademark for PS Home but that does not mean much. But you never know.

Dreams & its users are amazing.

Abnor_Mal1096d ago

At the end of the last video by MBG he says that Sony just renewed the trademaek for PS Home, so it's possible that they are looking into bringing it back in some fashion, possibly vr.

Goozex1096d ago (Edited 1096d ago )

It ended mostly because of racism and lack of funds

cammers19951096d ago

There were alot of factors that I'm not entirely sure about but I do remember racism and homophobia was a major problem on playstation home.

gold_drake1096d ago

haha what
i mean ok i was on the european server, so the racism and homophobe bit wasnt as much of an issue, but i dont think thats the reason. every space had atleast 2 mods roaming about.

pshome was shut down because it didnt make sony the money they thought it would bring. home was ahead of its time. it would work pretty well in this day and age.

but racism was not the reason. you couldnt even say most of the words. lol.

cammers19951096d ago

In the covid times where people are staying home playstation home would have worked well.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno33d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.

Dreams - Tren Trailer | PS4 Games

Get ready for a trenmendous puzzlin’, high-score chasin’, nostalgic adventure, in the latest Mm Original, Tren!

This is really cool, it’s a shame they didn’t do more of this during the first 5 years of dreams. Demonstrates how powerful a tool it is. I kind of got the feeling puzzle types of games were really going to be the best use of dreams for putting together a whole complete game. More ambitious things never went beyond tech demos really. Or did they? I stopped really looking after a while

closed_account272d ago (Edited 272d ago )

Yea, this is John Beech's creation.. I remember him showing these trains in production 2 or so years ago, so it's pretty amazing how far he's taken it!

John's story is pretty awesome. He was just a normal guy working a construction job, and he built Little Big Planet levels on PS3 just for fun. Media Molecule contacted, then hired him bc his creations were so good.

He has been a lead designer for MM, 14 yrs, until recently he became their new Creative Director this year when Mark Healey stepped down.

Beech is a super nice and humble guy, I've been following him for a few years now since i first saw his photo realistic "Traditional English Breakfast" creation in Dreams.

So you can see why this creation is the best of the best! I find Beech's story super inspiring, someone who did not go through the traditional route of game design training with nothing but a whole lot of passion and a hell of an amount of undiscovered talent!

Inverno271d ago

Apparently there's a movie that will use Dreams engine, but I believe it's still in the making. That's probably as ambitious as it'll get unfortunately.

Yi-Long272d ago

This looks gorgeous and fantastic. Really hope Sony reconsiders pulling support for Dreams, now that it’s coming to Plus.

closed_account272d ago

I'm really hoping they create a sequel that they can expand upon with multiplayer and huge connected worlds. This could be Sony's Rec Room or Roblox if they supported it right. It would be the best looking of the bunch for sure!

Honestly, I think Sony should put Media Molecule in charge of creating a new Playstation Home platform, utilizing these player creation tools they've developed.

I can only imagine how amazing a cohesive PS Home world could be in PSVR, but they should of course include flat support just like Rec Room/Roblox.
