It’s more of the same. PS4 games brought to PS5 have max resolution of whatever PS4 PRO put out. It’s hard coded in. Same for Xbox One games. They max out at whatever One X maxed out at resolution wise. Uncapping a framerate is easy. Those resolutions were hard coded to make the games run a specific way, at a specific time, to stay under a specific cap.
How digital foundry STILL hasn’t picked up on this is beyond me. It’s still “curious” to them. These games aren’t taking advantage of the new hardware. They are updates and the hardware muscles through the rest. Can’t wait for ACTUAL PS5 and Series X games. Not these polished PRO, One X games.

fr0sty1559d ago

Go for the console exclusives, then, not multi-generational multiplats.

The devs says its a bug they will fix, both versions are supposed to be 1800p

https://mobile.twitter.com/...

LucasRuinedChildhood1559d ago (Edited 1559d ago )

To be fair, DF made it clear that the PS5 version of this game will be patched to 1800p and definitely have picked up on the general trend of PS5/XSX games inheriting limitations from the Pro/One X versions (I know that they also pointed this out in their Outriders coverage).

Also, this isn't even a DF video.

Aussiesummer1559d ago

WRONG!
PS5 will be getting an 1800p patch. df know far more than you do.

Neonridr1559d ago

1440p was the max resolution of the PS4 Pro? I swear some games ran at like 1800p before.

Deathdeliverer1559d ago

@ Neon the max resolution they targeted when they initially made the game. For this one it was 1440p. It takes a lot of extra effort to change the hard coded resolution. That’s why most of the devs simply don’t do that with these “updated” games. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just saying devs are spending limited resources and time on these cross gen games that have already released before the new consoles. Newer cross gen games will fare better because they are taken into consideration from the start.
Bottom line, I can’t wait for current gen to take over. Not halfway revisiting last gen on current gen.

Neonridr1559d ago

@Deathdeliverer - I guess you've never played a PC game. Changing the resolution is literally a toggle switch.

Deathdeliverer1559d ago (Edited 1559d ago )

@Neon

These aren’t computer games in that sense. These are more like IPhones. They know exactly what hardware they have available in every unit and can balance every frame, every resource accordingly and program it that way.
On PC it’s a slider because it’s like you can try it and see if it works and balance out YOUR likes and dislikes.

Did you really think console games had a slider in the traditional sense? They are programmed to get the most out of it. That whole balance has to be redone on console when it comes to resolution. On PC it’s if you have the muscle for it, see what happens.

Neonridr1559d ago

@Deathdeliverer - if you don't think these machines are just PC's you need to do a little more research. Same architecture (x86). They are more like PCs than ever before.

Believe me, changing a line of code to tell the game what resolution to render at is not as complex as you are making it out to be.

GOULDYBOBS1559d ago

Interesting point I didn't know that. I was wondering how this game couldn't be 60 fps at 4k. I only played an hour but I found it to be bland

Father__Merrin1559d ago

Ps5 will be patched according to devs. But its only a 5 gb game?

ZwVw1559d ago

Yep, only 5gb. That's because the devs found a way to store the textures procedurally.
Deck13 uses a similar process in their games. The Surge 1&2 are both well over twenty hours in length, yet their file sizes are barely 5gb in space.

Father__Merrin1559d ago

I also noticed that on the Surge mabey for linear/hub titles this could be a better way.

spoonard1559d ago

PS5 doesn't support 1440p I thought?

Orchard1559d ago (Edited 1559d ago )

Just means it’s rendered at 1440p and upscaled to 4K. Developers can render at any resolution they want but the box will only output at 1080p and 4K.

rdgneoz31559d ago

It's a bug and PS5 will get patched to 1800p

Tacoboto1559d ago

Games can render at whatever resolution they need to, but the system just doesn't output at 1440p. Game res is independent of system/output res

Mortal Shell Frame Rate Finally Fixed On PS5 With Dynamic Resolution Update

Mortal Shell had a terrible performance on the PS5 since the arrival of the 4K patch that bumped the resolution to native 4K.

RaidenBlack1522d ago

Finally they implemented the dyna-1800p for PS5.

gravedigger1522d ago

This is more like it. Now PS5 is the most stable version framerate wise

MetroidFREAK211522d ago

How hard is this game? I'm kinda interested in getting it for my PS5

Luc201522d ago

It's fun and not too difficult to learn the game mechanics. Very pretty on ps5. I don't have much time for games so YouTube guides helped me to finish it otherwise you may find yourself wandering around trying to figure out what to do next.

MetroidFREAK211522d ago

So easier than Dark Souls? Noted thanks

Luc201522d ago

I'd say more difficult as there's no online co-op so you can't summon help to beat bosses:-) Gotta do everything on your own

DarXyde1521d ago

Sounds about as difficult then.

Never played it, but I'm very particular about never summoning friends or phantoms on my first playthrough of a SoulsBorne game.

I should check it out then.

Mortal Shell Now Runs At 1800p On PS5 But At a Cost of Lower Performance Than XSX

Mortal Shell has been patched to run at 1800p on the PS5 but this also leads to the performance of the game suffering as a result.

RaidenBlack1539d ago

Why not implement a dynamic 1800p?

ColdSin1539d ago

It was actually dynamic, but some people complained that the resolution was low (it was 1440p max and stuck at that most of the time).

RaidenBlack1539d ago

Yea I know ... and then why not just "extend" the upper limit of the dyna-res from 1440p to 1800p?
Why a fixed 1800p, where the XSX has the aforementioned dyna-1800p?

RazzerRedux1539d ago

Would have been better to leave it at 1440p than boost it to 1800p without DRS. You are not going to notice the difference in resolution, but you will the difference in frame rate.

ReignMan_271539d ago

PS5 version was never dynamic. It was a locked 1440p. Series X resolution however is the one that's dynamic (dynamic 1800p) and so is Series S. Which is interesting because the PS4 Pro resolution was not dynamic also, but the One X version is which makes me think they just took the code from the last gen versions and just implemented a few upgrades.

Babadook71538d ago

It’s unfortunate for the ps5 versions. At first it was static resolution at 1440p. Now it’s static at 1800p. A variable resolution would be preferable.

iplay1up21539d ago

Exactly, developers have done that in the past so framerates dont suffer. Now that I have Series X I am really loving 60fps and don't mind if dynamic resolution is used.

It is concerning that these new consoles are supposed to be 8K ready and so far can't always run at 4k 60fps. The new Ori runs at 120fps and is 6k compressed to 4K, it is gorgeous but it is only a 2.5d game.

Fishy Fingers1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

8K ready doesnt mean 8k games (outside of the most basic).

It's just the maximum supported output of the GPU, in the case of the consoles the most likely (if any) use being 8k movie/tv/streaming content, apps (like browsers) and possibly the desktop/home.

Its pretty much the standard maximum output for any GPU since 2016. Doesnt mean much.

mcstorm1539d ago

I still find this native 4k side funny. I will always perfer 60+fps over 4k30.

Games tend to feel better and after moving to pc last gen I don't see myself going back to consoles if games go back to being 30fps. It's mad I look at a game like Forza horizon for an example and it was always a 30fps game and I was OK with it. Then I got the Xbox x and playes it 1080p 60fps and 4k 30fps and yes 4k looked stunning but it was like playing 2 different games.

I really hope developers carry on with the fps over rez push.

TrueViper1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

They never meant 8k gaming on any console. Even high end PCs cant achieve 8k. There are some super high end PCs that can do 8k, but is ridiculously expensive just for the GPU and TV or monitor alone. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

derek1538d ago

8k was never going to happen for games this gen. Very few people own 8k televisions anyway.

strifeblade1539d ago

Bro you should be an advisor to the developer. Kim sure it never crossed their mind that they could do that. Let's all clasp for this genius idea that completely slipped the minds of the developers.

RazzerRedux1539d ago

He's asking a good question. Why even bother with 1800p when the frame rate drops so drastically. And yeah, why not DRS? Your absurd sarcasm certainly doesn't answer any questions.

blackblades1539d ago

@Razzer its because they listen to the wrong people. This isnt the 1st time a dev listen to a fool and made things worst.

RazzerRedux1538d ago

@blackblades

Apparently this happened and wasn't supposed to at all.

"It shouldn't be making the frame rate dip like this. Annoyed this wasn't flagged by QA. Back to the drawing board..."
PlayStack - Mortal Shell Publisher

Which makes strifeblade's post look even more silly.

Framerate > graphics, resolution. Always

jznrpg1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

You can have 1000fps and a crap game and crap graphics and 280p . 30Fps works for some games , I prefer 60 ,120 isn’t necessary at all unless your a paid competitive player . I could not tell the difference from 120fps to 60fps besides the graphics downgrade in games that have the option this gen. Dynamic res is fine with around 60fps . Just below 60 you won’t notice unless it tears or stutters which isn’t happening in any games I’ve seen. I don’t need perfect performance , I just want fun games that run well ina good balance but most importantly fun.

Snookies121539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

There is very much a noticeable difference between 120 and 60... Although it's much easier to see when playing a first-person game. I have an older PC so I can't run a lot of newer games at super high framerate. I can however easily tell when a game goes from 120-140 down to 60-80 FPS. It's still smooth, but not nearly as smooth as triple digits.

zero_jp1539d ago (Edited 1539d ago )

Halo Infinite looks like dog poop precisely because Microsoft wanted to force 120FPS to hit that talking point.

There is no way in hell that game is going to look good no matter what light touches they try to sprinkle on top of it.

I can only imagine how it would have looked if it was 60FPS on next gen consoles max rather than the 120FPS they’re shooting for unnecessarily.

PC obviously is going to make it look the best. However the art style and blandness the developers chose won’t be fixed even on heavy duty PC’s.

Let’s hope the gameplay is at least decent. Otherwise this will be another 343 developed Halo that won’t live up to anything Bungie ever did.

amazinglover1539d ago

You can't tell the difference because either your TV/Monitor doesn't support it or if it does your not using it.

Father__Merrin1539d ago

God of War 30fps 1080p on ps4 has better graphics than Thomas was alone PC 200fps 4k...grapbica isn't just numbers

Miles looks amazing with the framerates higher. It's actually nutts the difference it makes.

MetroidFREAK211538d ago

60 FPS is the much better option in Miles Morales

IamTylerDurden11539d ago

As someone who has played all versions of the game from Pro, to PS5 not enhanced, to enhanced on PS5, to patched the framerate still appears quite smooth and the three frame difference is not noticeable. Perhaps dynamic 1800 would be the best decision as dynamic resolution is more favorable than inconsistent framerate, but the game is so massively improved on the Enhanced Edition and such a joy that a few frames just isn't a factor for me.

In my opinion PS5 is the best console experience for Mortal Shell hands down. We can debate whether 57 frames but native resolution are better or worse than 60 at dynamic res, but for me, the excellent DualSense implementation makes the difference. It truly adds to the immersion and enhances the experience. I am loving Mortal Shell on PS5, whereas, it was slightly disappointing on PS4 compared to PC.

Magog1539d ago

How does it live up to something like Dark Souls 3?

Highrevz1539d ago

This guys clearly played this game a lot so I’m also interested in hearing how it is.
I hear it’s not a long game but I’m ok with that as the price is low.

jznrpg1539d ago

Nice to read . I have waited for the patch to play Mortal Shell and I’m going to pop it in tonight . I love the Dual Sense when it is used properly. It adds an extra dimension with the triggers and specifically placed vibrations and I also like the speaker on the controller when I’m not using headphones . It adds a little bit extra to the mix too.

jznrpg1539d ago

It looks like they will patch this one more time with Dynamic res

gamingtext20201539d ago

I hope so, it’s a pretty decent game, but with my recent playthru, you can definitely notice the stuttering now. I can’t tell the difference that much with the resolution. It still looks sharp, but the frames are definitely taking a hit. I’m currently fighting that Grisha boss for the second time.
