I'd argue that Crystal was the best. At least when it comes to GB/GBC Pokemon, but I'm biased since it was my first game

Crystal was the combination of Gold/Silver, the best Pokémon games. G/S was like Borderlands 2 of the series. Perfected and let you relive what was great in the original. Plus the clear cartridge was badass.

It was great. For its time. Just play FireRed and LeafGreen. Proper remakes.
