UK newspaper The Guardian ranks their top 20 handhelds of all time, from the Gizmondo (the what?) to the Switch. What's your take on the best handhelds ever?
I'd have given it to the DS personally.
I'm a big 3DS fan (even if I never use the 3D...). I absolutely love my Switch, but being a 'convertible' it's not as good at specifically being a handheld/console as specialised devices are.
Its a toss up. The fact that the Switch can play the same games as current gen consoles (mostly) makes it very good. But 3DS had a huge variety of its own.
I think this is why lists like this should only include systems that have come and gone. This is not the first ever list of this type I've come across. This gives me flashbacks to the mid-late 2000s, when there were lists that had the Xbox 360 as the best console of all time. It's not that it's bad to be fond of whatever system is currently out, but the thing is, whatever is current will almost always be more on the mind of whoever is making these lists. It's a lot easier to take a step back and examine the life cycle of a system when it has passed, along with its lasting legacy. I for one am always going to be spending the most time with my systems that are current. That said, the Switch definitely needs to be in the top 5. It will just sound more credible as the "best ever" once it's examined in hindsight. I too have to give it to the DS though...not that Nintendo is laughing any less on their way to the bank.
3DS for me hands down.
The DS range was possibly best
I don't care for the switch, but I agree. It is the best hand-held gaming device since it's able to be used as a home console also.
No surprise that Nintendo occupies the top 5 positions (and 6 out of the top 10 overall). For me, the Gameboy Advance SP (the later AGS101 model with the backlit screen). Massive library of amazing games and backwards compatible with the the OG Gameboy and Gameboy Colour catalogue. Still use mine daily.
Who cares what the Guardian thinks? 😂🤦🏻♂️
I'm sorry but the switch has issues like broken analogs with a high chance of drift, its a very cheap build. Never has a console broken on me as the switch did. I mean how does the USB port pin break...I have owned a lot of devices but never came across a USB port pin come off so easily. The best portable console is the Ds
Articles list: 1. Switch 2. DS 3. 3DS 4. GBA/SP 5. Gameboy 6. PS Vita 7. PSP 8. Gameboy Color 9. GameGear 10. Neo Geo Pocket Color 11. NEC Turbo Express 12. Atari Lynx 13. Wonderswan 14. MB Microvision 15. Gamepark 16. Sega Nomad 17. Nokia N-Gage 18. Tapwave Zodiac 19. Dreamcast VMU 20. Gizmondo
My personal top five would probably be: 1. Switch 2. DS 3. PSP 4. 3DS 5. GBA I really liked the PSP. I like my Vita too, but the PSP's library was really great.
How many times in the past have they said this about the system? Kinda odd timing this article coming-out now right before the new Switch release. I wander what there going to say after the release of the new system.
so...it's decided that it is a handheld, right?
No it is both...the thing i don't see anyone talking about though is how they combined their two individual markets for the switch, and I don't think they will be able to separate them again, and if they do sales will go down for their individual handheld and console markets compared to switch.
The Lite is 100% a handheld and I am sure the vast majority of the sales are for the Lite
