Bugs aside, is Cyberpunk 2077 actually a good game?

CD Projekt Red is clearly an excellent storyteller, that much is indisputable - Game Invader's Martyn just wishes as much care and attention had gone into the gameplay as has clearly gone into the narrative. He'll soldier on through, and will see where the developer's roadmap of updates takes us into the future.

Bugs aside (tbh i didn't have too many problems so far), this game is basically The Witcher on steroids. So, yeah, this game is one of the best ever.

Personally for me, gameplay and potential bugs and glitches go hand-in-hand because how can I enjoy the gameplay if I have these ridiculous bugs distracting me from fully enjoying and immersing myself into the game? I gotta admit I’m only maybe 1 hour in on the street kid story but I’m not all that impressed so far. I’m on PC and running 1440p @60fps everything set to ultra including all rtx features. If I set it to psycho it drops to about 30fps. Not quite sure what all the fuss was about with it being a system killer. I run it on an i5 2070 super, both overclocked of course. I’m not as blown away by the graphics as I thought I was going to be. NPC’s are just stupid and their animation sucks. It also crashes quite regularly. So far in fact I think I was more impressed by RAGE. Gameplay-wise It all seems a bit shallow so far.

It’s a strange one so far. I hope my opinion changes soon. It will certainly get better through patches from CDPR but people reviewing it as 10/10 in its current form are a complete joke and shouldn’t be trusted!

difference of opinion is fine, i never said it should be rated 10/10 (the bugs should bring the score down at least a couple points just to be fair to all the games they blasted when they had bugs). I actually like it though I played street kid and enjoyed it. I'm surprised you run it at ultra including rtx, I don't have a an overclocked 2070 super though mine is just at regular levels. I can't overclock my cpu either i have the f series of intel chip. Not even sure if I'd go through the trouble of overclocking (or even if the gpu brand can be overclocked), would rather my card lasted longer. I also have not crashed during gameplay whatsoever and only encountered real minor bugs.

I think you’re more worried about overclocking than you should be. They’re designed to be. Every card can do it and it can be as simple as pressing one button on your software in some cases. It’s not going to have any real effect on the longevity of the card as long as your not stupid with it. I overclocked my 2070 Super the moment I installed it in my rig. It’s never been run at standard clocks since I got it. Runs at clocks 2040mhz and I think it’s 12000mhz mem. Or at least it did, the newest drivers seem to knock the clocks down fairly quickly to about 1990ish thanks to the 3000 series problems. Which I’m not happy about, why should my card suffer because of the poor quality issues of a different series of cards!

Ok I take it back. I seemed to have some sort of bug that wasn’t loading in full post processing properly in the environment and ray tracing wasn’t working fully either. It reloaded it all back in when I set the graphics back to psycho mode. So I’ve just left it at that. Amazingly it seems to be running a little better too. It does look pretty amazing and I am enjoying it a bit more. I’ve had to switch to a game pad. Driving with keyboard was terrible.

I am excited that they have a world now, work on it and hopefully their next game in this universe will be much better.

Yeah I am loving it. I just feel lucky that I was able to get a Series X, otherwise I would have gotten it for PS4 Pro with no knowledge of the performance issues till it was too late.

Playing on quality mode and having a blast, but I feel like this should have been gen 9 console exclusive. It is advertised as a gen 8 game, but is a mess on those platforms. I would urge anyone to till they have a Series X/S or PS5 to play this game, because the gen 8 consoles don't do it justice.

-Flying NPCs in gunfights
-Empty world full of nothing to do. According to the guidebook that comes with the game, you should be able to visit a bar and partake of the entertainment by slotting a chip or any other entertainment.
-Merchants stores don't always open up even when prompted with a "What do you have for sale."
-Inventory menu shows two guns equipped in the same slot, doesn't allow player to switch "action not allowed." DPS increase disappears when equipped.
-Crafting is a huge letdown. Craft medpaks and bullets. Everything else can be found in missions or by killing gang members. This also makes stores irrelevant except to sell stuff. (ripperdocs withstanding.)
-Money is so easily made that my character already was in the big time before Johnny Silverhand showed up.
-Driving: car slams to a halt and doesn't move further because of a beer bottle.
-Climbing is inconsistent and doesn't always work.
-Stealth: works if they are not looking at you but now (could be part of bullet sponge glitch above) instantly turn around when grab button is pressed.
-Items not easily picked up; reticule needs to be off center of object.
-There is nothing to do other than missions. No games, no poker, no roulette despite there being games of such at a bar
-No romance
-Crashes
-Driving part 2. Worried about cars in your way that are driving? Just speed up and they will go over your head as you blast them out of your way
-graphical glitch while aiming down sights, sights are just a blank of white blocking the enemy I am aiming at
-aiming is a disaster
-Zoom walking: after exiting dialogue, character walks as if zoomed in. Sometimes sprint is turned off. Jumping solves the slow pace of walking.

Traffic has no AI at all. They just move from A to B. Meaning if you block the road even slightly they all stop.

The AI in the open world is literally worse than PS2 level.

Driving physics is from 2002

No body customization (tattoos, hair etc)

There is veryyyy little to do in the open world outside of quests

Enemy AI is terrible.

The game does have a great atmosphere, gunplay and story but it is seriously flawed.

I honestly am surprised people are calling this a next-gen open-world experience when the only thing next-gen about it is how it looks. The NPC AI is just stupid and the world doesn't interact with you in any meaningful way. There was much promised in 2018 that was cut from the final game.

These are the things they promised in 2018:

* rail system
* advanced physical destruction with real-time rebuilding (similar to RDR2).
* reaction chains (massacring a trade area would cause a local economic issue).
* buying apartments and housings.
* and much more.

If this is considered a "next-gen open-world experience", then what is RDR2 considered? the "living, breathing world" in that game is also a facade, but a facade that is really well-hidden compared to Cyberpunk.

I feel like CD Projekt should have toned down the promises and compared their game to the Mafia franchise where the open-world is just there to set the tone for the missions. I'm playing the game in that manner anyways.

PS. I don't hate the game... It has a great story and mission to mission gameplay. What I hate is false advertising... The amazon page for this game for PS4 says it is an "open world that sets a new standard for visuals, complexity and depth." I didn't expect it to be worse the GTA Vice City.

It sounds like you are hating the game...that was a long list man, WOW! And all is almost about NPCs, who cares. I love the city, the setting, the missions (side and main), the details. They will probably fix NPCs with an update, but it is not like I spent my time in GTA talking to NPCs on the street. I was just blowing them up with a bazooka, and waiting for a 5 star wanted chase. And there are interactions with NPCs. I was not expecting anything different to be honest. They need to fix the NPC interaction on many levels, but it will come with an update.

I think it’s ok, but my hype and the reveal demo ruined it for me along with the bugs.

I’ve had two instances where I couldn’t do objectives in a mission like it kept telling me to talk to Viktor and Jackie was nowhere. I couldn’t pick up the briefcase in the Arasaka floating vehicle on rooftop despite reloading autosaves. The downgrades to the visuals and stiff animations make it a little depressing.

I don’t know, you take away the mystique of what was promised and it’s just ok’ish. I don’t want them to give up on this franchise so here’s hoping the sequel will be leaps and bounds better.

From the 7 hours or so I played it was pretty cool. Had that old school RPG vibe like Skyrim or New Vegas.
But the bugs. And serious ones. Playing on PS5 and I had 5 or 6 full crashes. And 10 to 12 progression stopping bugs where I needed to close the game and restart it then load an earlier save. In 7 hours. So basically every 20-40 min the game either crashed or needed to be restarted.
Put it down after the last crash. I’ll try again when the full PS5 version releases. Prob going to replay Ghost of Tsushima.

I don’t think I will put the 200+h I put in Witcher 3, but so far so very good.
Especially, main NPC interactions and animations are amazing, and the Blade Runner vibe is very strong.

I would also add that the game runs pretty solid on PC on my opinion (Ryzen 5700x, 1080ti, 32GB ram, SSD).
Sure, there is bugs but not at the level of the internet controversy.

Only major bug encounter is a none starting script on hacking that made me restart a secondary fixer mission.

There is some minor but very visible bugs, mainly floating phones/tablets in the city, and above all the bald V bug in mirrors depending of equipped outfit which can really be immersion breaking, but will certainly be fix very soon.

I'm not sure how anyone can consider this game great in its current state. I think the question is a good question in which I'm a bit disappointed in the game so far. Part of that is due to the roughness of the technical issues hampering the experience. I'm playing on an XB1X and spent a lot of time exploring Night City.

Once I got back to the missions, they are interesting enough to keep you playing. The BD is kinda cool and feels like what the Batman games should have done. The gun play and the driving isn't great. Its not bad but not great. The overload of porn in the game is annoying at best since it adds nothing to the game...as of yet. The RPG elements seem fine in a Deus Ex kinda way.

Truth be told, this game does very little new or that we haven't played before in other games. It doesn't do those things better and in some cases worse. The only unique thing about this game is the look and its a compilation of various games into one. Part GTA, part Deus Ex with things taken from other games. Hopefully the story keeps you interested until they fix all the bugs but no way this game without the bugs get a great or GOTY nod from me.

After 2 days of playing, I could boil it down to this: they have taking everything from the greats of the past 2 generations, taken all best bits and improved on them, all combined into one game. The problem is that it lacks polish in a lot of aspects with a few noticeable exceptions: story, acting, immersion, visuals and fun gameplay. It has been the buggiest game I've ever played. Seriously, probably one bug every 5 minutes or something. Even playing Bugthesda games at launch I didn't have this many bugs. It is bizarre just how frequent they are. I understand it's a big game and there's lots going on under the hood. But it's the amount of bugs you'd expect from a shovelware game.

That being said, I am enjoying it. It has a lot of issues with introducing the player to new elements, though. It has so many mechanics and systems, and they kind of just throw the player right into it. That kind of stuff is hard for me to grasp and I prefer getting it fed to me more slowly. I'm liking the game a lot, though.

It is still a good game, even a great one, but clearly held back by bugs and cdprs high ambitions. The game has more potential than any game I've ever played, but the bugs, oversights, and odd design decisions hold it back. I didn't expect it to be amazing, so I'm having a blast on ps4 pro. The world, characters, and atmosphere are the best I've ever seen. Even just treating it like a walking/world simulator it is entertaining.

One thing I will say, is CDPR had better no man's sky this thing and spend the next year fixing issues and making this the best damn game ever. I'm on PC too, a few bugs like floating NPC phones and seen a few people walk through doors other than that I'm struggling to think of anything else... I've yet to have a crash in 20+hours of play (I'm not saying it doesn't happen just it's not happened to me yet).

What I have noticed since the last update is how much better it runs, I can now have everything run on 4k ultra (Screen space reflections on high) DLSS set to balanced (before it was on Auto) and screen space lighting is on psycho and I'm getting an average of 52fps with next to no noticeable drops.

It has issues but nothing game breaking I had some massive frame slow downs in a spot that wasn't even during actual gameplay so annoying but not game breaking, Jackie passed through a car once and a set of elevator doors as well, funny but again not game breaking and I found a floating serving tray in a stair well in the bar you start the game in. I'm not super far in but bugs aside I'm enjoying it but its not as revolutionary as many thought it was going to be.

Im now in act 2 and om kinda getting bored...i hope some of these locked doors open up soon so i can see the vaunted verticality. Its like they threw everything they wanted into the game with no questions asked about if they could pull it all off at a high quality. At this point im only playing for the cool atmosphere...but i might shelve it in the hopes the next gen upgrade is a whole new game.

I looks like they are trying to follow the Fallout 76 example that Bethesda set. Give it a year or so and it will be a decent game. It's working fine on my Xbox One X, but I'm not that far into it. If I slow play it long enough they might fix the game by the time I get it finished!!
