AMD Radeon 6800 XT/6800 vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080/3070 Review - Which Should You Buy?

Digital Foundry writes, "BIG NAVI!! Delayed a touch owing to the next-gen console deluge, here's the Digital Foundry verdict on the RX 6800 XT and the RX 6800. Priced below 3080 and above 3070 respectively, AMD's pricing pretty much falls into line with rasterisation performance. There's some innovative engineering here, and full support for next-gen features including VRS and ray tracing... but just how well do the new AMD cards straddle the generational divide?"

I'm so happy I didn't wait for the RX 6800 XT and went for the RTX3080 for my new pc, been waiting for this comparison to see if I chose correctly.

FlyingFoxy1622d ago

There's not much speed difference between the 3080 and 3090, if 3080Ti going to bring anything noticeable it will be more vram and a little more speed at best. I'm not sure what to think of the whole 10GB being enough thing, cutting it close but should be fine for the majority of games at least until next gen Hopper in 2 years, though some have started calling DF Nvidia shills after this video.

Even if 10GB isn't enough for a handful of games at 1440p and 4k between now and next gen cards, you can always lower the texture settings a notch which should then be fine tbh.

@FlyingFoxy

The 3080 vs 3080 Ti really boils down to a simple question IMO.

Do you plan on keeping your GPU for the next several years, or do you plan on upgrading to the 5nm GPUs scheduled to launch late 2021 - summer 2022?

If you plan on sticking with your GPU the 3080 Ti is the way to go having more VRAM will keep that GPU future proof, whereas, the 10GB 3080 will start to see issues in a few games as it's bandwidth is enough to help it out, but games are already using 12GB now, so in a few years from now it's going to be pressed hard. But if you upgrade every generation, then that doesn't really matter, as getting the 3080 will save you likely $150 - $300 off a reference 3080 Ti, and you can get a 7nm / 5nm 4080 in a year or so that will be another leap in performance, reduced TDP, and more VRAM.

Not a good comparison video. They tested with a I9 so it's using pci-e 3.0. The 6800XT works better in an AMD pcie-4.0 system. For 1440P the AMD card pulls ahead and closer to 3090, especially when overclocked to 2.6GhZ.

ecchiless1622d ago

yea i think was last week when jazytwocents was doing a comparison video.

I saw a video where a I9 using PCI-e 3.0 still was performing better than a 6800XT using AMD CPU pci-e 4.0 system

masterfox1622d ago

Buy?, hehe how funny, those things never existed for the normal mortal. :P

Old_Boss_1622d ago

All of them are good pick whatever suits you in terms of features and more importantly whichever ones you find in stock

PersonX1622d ago (Edited 1622d ago )

Too bad none off them are available

FlyingFoxy1622d ago

I've seen some pop up through discord notifications, but they usually go very quickly, seen 2 different 3080 cards pop up over the last few days listed at Amazon which were actually decently priced, most are overpriced though. Only way of getting one any time soon is either joining a queue (wouldn't recommend it) or waiting on a stock alert and being quick enough. Otherwise it's probably at least 2-3+ months before decent availability.

I managed to order a PS5 easier than a 3080 and on release day to boot, the 3080 i ordered on release day i am still waiting in a damn queue for. Thing is i ordered it at £650 and the TUF cards are not going back to that early offering price now.

phoenixwing1622d ago

all i have is my humble 2070 super which I'll ride out for the entire generation

masterfox1622d ago (Edited 1622d ago )

Lol if that's humble dont know what my 1060 is XD, still I dont go in complete sadness cause I see my 1060 gtx 6GB priced at 400 bucks for some reason lol, not sure what the fridge!! Is going on with the GPUs!

phoenixwing1622d ago

lol i was only saying it's humble when compared to the latest and greatest. your 1060 is probably fine for the resolution you play at. I play at 2k 60fps usually. And yeah gpu's are going for crazy prices since everyone is indoors. I'm glad I got mine in april before the price hikes came.

annoyedgamer1622d ago

I still have that same card. Wont upgrade untill the 3060 comes out.

well, the switch 2 has two holidays in the us, thanksgiving and Christmas.

so id say its fairly possible. the rest of the world will also grab them

Abriael2d ago

Yeah doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility as long as they have enough supply.

Si-Fly2d ago

Do people buy each other games consoles for Thanksgiving? I’m in Europe and always assumed it was just Christmas where gifts were exchanged.

Skate-AK2d ago

I don't think it's so much Thanksgiving, but that Black Friday is the day after.

darthv722d ago (Edited 2d ago )

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

gold_drake1d 17h ago

i guess its more black friday, should have been more clear ha

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx2d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS2d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
