Xbox Series X Temperature and Overheat Test, Here's How It Performs

For those wondering about the Xbox Series X temperature and whether it overheats, check out this test using a thermal camera to see how it performs.

darthv721714d ago

So under gaming load inside a box (simulating a entertainment center) it got up to 56c or roughly 133f. That exhaust is pretty warm. I plan on having mine upright with open air all around.

SullysCigar1714d ago (Edited 1714d ago )

This is assuming, of course, that they have your average Series X.

It could be a bad one, making it seem worse than it actually is - or a good one, making it look better than it actually is.

EDIT: @ below lol very good @darthv72!

Nitrowolf21714d ago (Edited 1714d ago )

It's a prototype build so it will be interesting to see where the final one marks since they will be the mass production models

darthv721714d ago

Still not hot enough to light Sully's cigar... ba dum tsss

ABizzel11713d ago

Austin’s channel just keeps going downhill.

First off I don’t think the console is overheating. It requires a lot of power and that power by nature of physics is going to produce heat. And the fact that if the console is standing up, the blower pushes it straight up into the air like a campfire is why people notice the heat so much.

That being said it is stupid to do a 5 minute test for heating and noise when people normally game for hour(s). It’s ridiculous and of course you won’t find issues.

Run the console for 2 - 4 hours per test and see the result. That is a real world example. Austin is here for the click, ads, and sponsors. I do not support this channel.

sinspirit1713d ago

@ABizzel1

True.

We also don't know how exactly demanding this game is. It may be inefficient code and therefore more stressful than it needs to be. Or, the system may have a bit more headroom and reduces fan speed before it hits 60c, for example. Definitely nowhere near overheating. But, it goes to show it's the entire design. Not just the theory of what is better for heat removal.

pocolocoX1713d ago

A prototype performing this well? Not even a PlayStation game can stop it, heh.

Sayai jin1713d ago

Not abnormal at all. The heat is being dispensed through the exhaust. Both next gen consoles will run relativley cool and silent.

Sayai jin1713d ago

Here's an article about tests a early adopter conducted of all next gen consoles:

https://www.naijatechnews.c...

All are in normal range.

DJStotty1713d ago

I know right, the concern would be if there was not hot air coming from the exhaust.

gamesftw2501713d ago

56 is extremely cool especially compared to PC parts. GPU under load goes a good 70 degrees at the least...

NEXUS-61713d ago

Yep - thats not hot at all, if temps can sit below 65⁰ consistently there won't be any problems.

Loktai1713d ago

Not true . Those are case temps not core Temps lol. A 70c case temp is high. Very high. 56 is on the high end but not catastrophic... just high like a case that needs more fans

Rainbowcookie1713d ago

The test is uninformative I think. Nobody games for 5 minutes. That said where else are the heat supposed to go anyway. The proof will be seen in the coming months, now everything is just rumours and articles are just based on that for clicks

porkChop1713d ago

56°c is cooler than both the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X under load.

LordoftheCritics1713d ago

56 might just be the coldest piece of gaming hardware.

Phoenix761713d ago

Lol nah mate. Here something a "little" bit cooler

itsmebryan1713d ago

I wonder when and if Sony is give out the PS5 to independent reviews like MS? They seem to be holding stuff back for some reason. To me at least giving out XSX show MS confidence in their hardware.

darthv721713d ago

MS has been very open and transparent lately. It shows confidence.

Not every 360 had red ring of death

NEXUS-61713d ago

Plenty did though, can't escape that fact - remember ms tried to sweep that under the rug.

oof461713d ago

Yup. Ended up spending over a billion dollars to fix that clusterfudge.

excaliburps1713d ago

I had two 360's who got RRoD. :( It was a big issue even if others won't admit it.

NEXUS-61713d ago

I've heard horror stories about 360, RROD would've been enough to sink most console manufacturers.

Unfortunately ms has stacks of cash and can wear a debacle like that and come out of it ok.

FanboySpotter1713d ago

Red ring happened because of board bending by heat something that isn't gonna happen with how strongly placed and safe both boards inside the series x are.

dumahim1713d ago

That and switching to lead-free solder. PS3 had some issues too as a result, just not nearly as many.

Sayai jin1713d ago

Yeah, a lot did. I had an original launch that lasted and didn't have an issue. I brought 3 more for our household and 2 got RROD and the other had disc drive issues. MS did horribly with this. They did a great job next gen as far as quiet and cool running systems. The 360s fans was like a jet engine.

AuraAbjure1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

My day one 360 lasted for 2 years with no problems until I sold it for cash. Then I bought one used 2 years later at some random electronics store and it RRoD in 11 days.

lucian2291713d ago

Red rings are why the sales number of 360's were so high..... Most were replacement purchases 😂😂😂 28514;😂

arkard1713d ago

Every 360 produced before whatever year they fixed the problem had the defect that led to rrod. Some lasted longer then others but all have the defect

kayoss1712d ago

NO, but enough to piss off people.

purple1011712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

33% at one point.

Also remember disk scratching... Yeh..that whole shambolic saga that people forget.

I thought the 2 issues I read about were:
1) The expansion card was hot to the touch
2) The system was putting out a lot of heat even when it was in low-power mode, which would be unusual.

Wikkid6661713d ago

1. The metal on expansion card is a heat sink... of course it's going to hot. But won't burn you.
2. Remember these are preview units prior to launch... tons of stuff can be happening when the console is in standby. Downloading system/software updates and downloading software.

Christopher1713d ago

To #2: Constantly writing to the SSD data that will in turn be utilized to allow quick resume and seamless switching to other games.

Fishy Fingers1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

So to summarise 12 full minutes, no issue with overheating.

crazyCoconuts1713d ago

In his cabinet use case he said it felt "toasty" but he's not super concerned

Fishy Fingers1713d ago

Put any 300watt electronic device in a box and it will feel "toasty". It's physics.

crazyCoconuts1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

@fishy I agree. Seems fine to me

averagejoe261713d ago

1) The expansion card was hot to the touch
2) The system was putting out a lot of heat even when it was in low-power mode, which would be unusual.

TravsVoid1713d ago

No it's not unusual, my one X does the same thing which is why I quit putting it in stand by.

dumahim1713d ago

@TravsVoid
My One X barely generates any heat. Feeling it, you can't even tell.

oof461713d ago

The whole "overheating" thing was overblown. Both consoles will run fine.
