Is The Digital PlayStation 5 Worth It?

In a big shift for Sony, the company is releasing two next-generation PlayStation models this year--the PlayStation 5 ($500) and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition ($400). Both systems have the same power and performance, but the digital model does not have a disc drive, and as such, it certainly looks more attractive on the surface with its lower price point. Owning a digital-only console, however, comes with some extra factors to consider.

Did Gamespot ask this same question about the Xbox Series S? No? Well what did they write? Oh yeah, this:
"Xbox Series S's Price Puts Sony And PS5 In A Difficult Position"

lukasmain1674d ago

It's fkn disgusting isn't it?

Sony articles need to have a negative spin to chop them down.

Xbox articles need to have a positive spin to build them up.

But they know that the vast majority of console gamers are fans of Playstation, so in order to get more clicks, they bash them any chance they get. All these websites are click-collecting sht holes

aaronaton1674d ago (Edited 1674d ago )

It's reminds me on the Trump hysteria in the US. It's like he can do nothing right and his competition can do no wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS were incentivising media outlets to make positive articles, maybe in exchange for free hardware and VIP treatment at Xbox events.

BillyG0AT1674d ago

It's not to build anyone up or chop them down, it's to get the fanboys to click out of anger. Job done.

Atom6661674d ago

Lol.

Are you guys just now discovering click bait?

If you "bash" PS, PS fanboys rush to defend it and Xbox fanboys rush to pile on.

And just like we also saw for years, if you "bash" Xbox, Xbox fanboys rush to defend it, and Sony fans rush to pile on.

It's pretty simple.

Hakuoro1674d ago

"All these websites are click-collecting sht holes"

Or shills hoping to get extra merchandise and advertising money from Microsoft.

Console war apart, any digital console has 0 value to me.. I'll never buy one because I refuse to be at the mercy of the publishers.. And all those PS4 game discs I have how do I pay them on a digital PS5??! Garbage that thing has to be discontinued, and quickly!!!

DMgHalt1673d ago

You do it by purchasing a PS5 with a disk drive dude. Did you read the article?

Profchaos1673d ago

Clicks and Microsoft has a bigger marketing budget IGN has been some of the worst at it this cycle constantly writing articles about how Sony us doomed and Xbox is genius for the same thing.

But the absolute worst think was IGN published stating that the series s is a more powerful machine than the ps5 because of the cpu architecture which was a flat out lie

Last week 150k ps4 sold.
Xbox 30k.
They need to push hard throu media, that doesn't play games that much.

Ps5 DE is fine by me cause my library is digital.
For others there is disc version, and that's also great.

jznrpg1674d ago

Yep , same specs machine so it’s based on preference. I prefer physical and that’s good for me but If someone doesn’t want cases and such to store or whatever and prefers digital that’s great for them .

Honestly I'm not trying to defend them but after reading the article, I couldn't find much negativity on it other than stating the obvious that you'd need the regular edition to buy physical games and the fact that digital media is being more popular over time. This was the verdict of the article:

"Getting a PS5 for $400 USD is a wildly attractive proposition. It may be $100 more expensive than the Xbox Series S--which also does not have a disc drive--but the digital PS5 is more powerful than that console, offering a 4K and 120Hz experience over the Series S' 1440p and 120Hz. In the end, whether or not the digital PS5 is worth it comes down to how much you rely on physical media and if you have enough space in your budget for an internet plan that can support the strain of downloading and streaming everything you want to play and watch. The video game industry--like film, music, and TV before it--is headed toward a more digitally focused future, but whether that future is now or later for you is a cost that you'll need to consider."

morganfell1674d ago

You did what most people do not - you read the article. The issue is the headline. Most people are impacted by a headline far more than the substance of the article. Questioning if something is worth it carries with it a negative connotation. The fact that someone is asking automatically plants the idea there might be a problem. It is simple psychology. And there is the fact that they have not bothered to treat the competition to a similar journalistic endeavor. It would have been simpler to broaden the article and include both units but instead they chose this route with this headline.

PlayStations new business model for the new generation is simply a less consumer friendly and out of touch when compared to what Xbox are now offering. On its own, there is really nothing wrong with what ps5 is doing or offering. But, when you compare it to what xbox is doing and also take the worlds hurting economy and bleak short/long term future into consideration, the PlayStation business model only serves them and their bottom line.

Last gen xbox was the hated greedy out of touch offering and PlayStation was the gamer centric media darling.

This gen those positions seem to have swapped. Only diehard fans can't or dont want to see that. I have a feeling that this new gen xbox will win the media war.

Myself as an example, I wouldn't touch the ps5 digital, but the full fat ps5? Yes please!!!
The series S is an excellent offering when paired with game pass. I have an xbox series X and S preordered, the S is for my kid.
My PS5 is gonna be for exclusives and nothing else.

Watching how the press has jumped ship on sony is amusing to say the least. But not everyone is laughing, that's for sure.

Petebloodyonion1673d ago

The difference between MS and Sony at the moment is that MS is showing the benefit and gains of the Serie X /S
while Sony isn't.
If you know the art of selling, showing the gains is the most impactful arguments instead of advantage or characteristics.
And thus why MS is suddenly having the winds in the sails.

Benefits already shown by MS
- You don't need to pay 500$ plus game at the gate you can pay 35$ monthly and you are already set up meaning more in your pocket
- With quick resume you don't have to wait for the intro or restart a game you play faster and you can swap games easily
- You don't need to worry about next gen upgrade with Smart Delivery
- All your playable games on Xbox 1 will be playable on next gen so you don't need to change console
- You current game plays better on Serie X
Etc.

On the other hand Sony has difficulty at the moment in communicating that and the why we see more negative article.
For example Sony has been communicating that the gains was that the Ps5 was the only place to truly play next-gen experience alluding that the games were exclusives to Ps5 and now that it's also on Ps4 Sony has to clarify and re-explain the gains.

Blaze9291674d ago

I think it's because there is a $100 price difference between the two, versus $200. If you can save another $100, why not. That $200 difference, might not be possible/worth it for some people.

Why y'all so hostile lol?

Sunny_D1674d ago

You’re also forgetting the specs aren’t gimped for the digital. The disc and digital both have the same specs unlike the One S.

1674d ago
itsmebryan1674d ago

The Xbox Series S is $100 cheaper and it's geared for 1440p. It's going for a lower market. When you have a lower price it's understood something's are reduced. Also did you see that PS5 is reported to only have 664GB available for user on SSD with the OS installed.

We got about a month to go and no one knows how much the expandable storage for the PS5 will cost and how it will work. What are they hiding?

morganfell1674d ago

How it will work. Cerny explained in video exactly how it will work. And it allows open market producers to fight a price war which is to the benefit of gamers.

Petebloodyonion1673d ago

@Morganfell
And Sony won't have a official expandable Storage available to sell next to the console?
Like go ahead Mr have no idea about disk drive. Search amazon for A/B or C
But make sure that B has model xxxxxxxx because model YYYYYYYY isn't compatible

Il be honest I have 0 faith in the 95% of the population that buy the cheapest HDMI without checking compatibility specs that they will suddenly know how to properly chose a Storage option unless there's a Playstation logo on the box,

$100 doesn't seem as big a price difference for me to disregard the disc slot. I'll always prefer having the option of deciding which method I play my favorite titles

Games1st1674d ago

There are people that buy all digital, so yes for them. No for everyone else.

Rhythmattic1674d ago (Edited 1674d ago )

I prefer physical with standard pancake gaming...... But Do generally buy my games digitally if they are VR titles..
Yes , Digital can be convenient for many for all gaming forms.. But digital for VR, a higher percentage are bite size games or experiences..... But full experiences like Re7 or Blood and truth , Physical for me.,...
So I guess, they'd be no reason besides the many for me to own a Series S Nor Disc-less PS5.

Charlieboy3331674d ago

Ummmm....if you prefer the digital edition...then...yes?

I think the riskier option is to sell a SP game that you throw some form of MP into just for the sake of it and that ends up affecting the quality of the SP experience. With the plethora of F2P MP games out there, why spend time and money on something when you can focus on the SP experience. Not to say that means they're all good, but at least they're not wasting time with things people don't want in SP games. I doubt anyone bought Veilguard for MP let alone will buy the next Star Wars SP game and expect MP either.

Garethvk14h ago

There is that. I think the modes that were tried for The Last of Us is a good example. But for me a FPS missing multiplayer seems off as it was such a staple FPS, RTS, and sports games are where gamers expect it to be.

Vits14h ago

It's the current logic. People are paying more, for less.

If that "saved" money were actually spent on improving the single-player experience, that’d be one thing. But anyone who actually plays games knows that’s not what happens. We’re in the era of “safe” games, stripped-down, polished packages full of shiny lighting, big setpieces, and all the interactivity of a NES-era background.

Multiplayer modes, extra features, modding tools, things that used to add value for players, keep getting cut. Why? Because they don’t add value for the company. And, as always, the useful idiots will cheer, pay more all while getting less than before. So of course companies will keep doing it.

Garethvk14h ago

Exactly and what gets me is if it is done correctly, multiplay adds money. Ask Activision how much they make on skins and DLC all the while giving a year of free content updates. You get through a Call of Duty campaign in about 8-12 hrs. The multiplayer and frequent content updates are what keeps people playing. I always pop back in when new maps and content release. I do not buy skins and packs but many do. I wonder if we will get the Half-Life 2 mode where Multiplayer is added later. Some may see how the game does and then decide to add it later.

isarai13h ago

I wish they would go back to having SOME simple mp, like instead of the only choices being going all out and gambling on a super roadmaped, season pass, Battle Royale, multiplayer with open world maps and tons of loot OR no multiplayer at all. Why cant we have something in between sometimes? Where's just this very simple PVP probably reusing a sectioned off peace of a level from a single player like they used to do

Garethvk13h ago

I think they all have a place but simpler forms are needed. I wish we would see more co-op play in a campaign.
