Physics question ... does bullet travel fast in space ?

Computersaysno1706d ago

Faster than it does inside Earth's atmosphere because it has no aerodynamic drag to slow it down. If you are in orbit and you aim perfect you can shoot yourself in the back after the bullet orbits and comes back around to hit you.

If you aim the bullet out into space and it ends up being caught in the gravity well of another planet, then it'll accelerate even further. Shooting perfectly at Jupiter's orbit for example by the time it hits the planet it'll be travelling multiple times the speed it was when it left the barrel as Jupiter's huge gravity well pulls it in.

What you say it's true, Science is beautiful isn't it? Problem is that in sapce there is no oxigen to trigger the explotion from the bullet when you shoot-
since you need O2+heat+fuel to make Fire and therefore make the gun powder explote and launche tjhe bullet in space that's not the case I believe. Hence why the guns in this game are lasers.... more realistic.

A common misconception DefaultComment.

Typical ammunition has its own oxidiser in the propellant. You need the propellant to burn very quickly and cleanly as possible.

Air even at sea level simply isn't oxygen dense enough to supply the needed oxygen for a really rapid burn and release of energy in such a small chamber that modern firearms possess.

So you have an oxidiser in there. That means a bullet can be fired under water, at high altitude with virtually no oxygen (Fighters that can fly at over 60,000 feet/20,000 metres still carry machine guns and they work) or even in space, with no atmosphere. Perhaps if the bullet and case had been exposed to a vacuum a very long time they might explode slower, but it you are still going to get a decent shot easily good enough to kill.

You can also see guns fired in hard vacuums if you want, youtube will likely help you.

Looks great, sadly they switched their main platform from PlayStation to PC and their support staff dodge questions related to the PS release now.

PC has had several betas to date, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up not making it to PlayStation in the end or is, at the very least, released way down the line following the PC release.

This game is incredible. I’ve been addicted since it came out. It scratches an itch that I haven’t felt in a long time. For early access, it and looks runs great. It does need some polishing around the user experience but I’m impressed. Can’t wait to see where it goes.
