Sony mislead its audience by not revealing which PS5 games are on PS4

Sony marketed several major titles such as Horizon Forbidden West as PS5 games, despite PS4 versions also being in development. It's not clear if it's intentional or not, but it's bad for the consumer.

I probably shouldn't engage, but the fact is I'm more interested and excited in the games PlayStation has shown for (at least so far) 2020-2021 than any Xbox titles, because we don't know a lot about the latter. Heck I'm more interested in Demon's Souls than any non-Cyberpunk game announced, period.

Doesn't mean I'm okay with Sony suddenly flipping the script and pretending it didn't spend a year saying the PS5 was a hard break. It's okay to call your favorite companies out, I promise.

I feel a bit cheated by Sony that they reveal this info now, im not sure if omission of info is the same as misleading, it just leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth that they didn't mention this earlier. Maybe they saw xbox got blasted for the crossgen and crossplatform stuff they are doing and wanted to pair the "negative news" with something that would without a doubt be very positively received (the price and date reveal etc), to lessen the impact of it. I dont believe they unintentionally didnt reveal that those games are also on ps4.
It's not even bad that those games will come to ps4 as well since a lot of people cant get their hands on a ps5 for the foreseeable future or just decide to pick one up later and can still enjoy the games. It's just that a company who has been in top shape for the last 8 years and which I almost blindly support, felt the need to withhold this information from their (loyal customers) for whatever reason, you can do better Sony.

Right so get the ps5. Personally I get all of the consoles. But I just don’t like the new god of war Spider-Man or horizon. And now that Quantic dream is going multiplat im really having a hard time justifying getting a ps5 this time around. I’ll get one to play with friends in some titles. But it’s frustrating having nothing to look forward to on the console so far. Hopefully there will be some fun Japanese games come out later, but with all the censoring might just go switch or switch 4K when that gets officially announced. But Xbox has far more interesting titles so far, halo gears Forza fable avowed, then I’ll be playing cyberpunk on series x where it will look and or play the best console wise.

I may be the only one who is looking forward to them releasing cross gen games. I know everyone else is hung up on tjere being cross gen games but thats not a bad thing. The next gen ones are going to be just fine. Nothing is being held back.

Yeah, that's the thing. Spider-Man was a PS4 game, that they're remastering for PS5 with a new character, new powers and new story. The trouble is, they showed off the speed of the PS5 SSD using tuned PS4 code and that can't be done on PS4. So people assume things, but I remember people saying at the time it should also come to PS4, albeit with appropriate adjustments.

HFW is a different case entirely. Sony have said that it will take full advantage of PS5 SSD and other benefits, so people assumed again (me too). But development started before PS5 dev kits were a thing, so it seems reasonable to put the sequel on PS4 too. GOW2 came out after the PS3 released because of the dev cycle and PS3 had to wait for the HD remaster - we won't have to this time!

NOW if GOW Ragnarok comes to PS4 I'd be surprised and pissed, because that would be purely a financial decision due to the massive PS4 base. That game should be used to sell PS5, since the development started that much later.

Exactly, buying a new console now is clearly more like upgrading your PC. Exact same game but waaay prettier and runs better.
The architecture of the new consoles is clearly extremely similar/pretty much the same as the current gen, so why would they not make all games cross platform. All they need to do is the same as we do on PC, turn some settings up and down depending on what system you are on.
People need to chill, the next gen versions will still look and play vastly better than the current gen versions, they won't be held back in any way, at least not any more than PC games have been held back by consoles forever.

The irony in what you're trying to point to here is that many were "misled" on this subject; however, most of that came from media, fanboys, and click-bait sites that pushed an inaccurate narrative.

They were able to do so because 1. It was framed in a very pro-Sony way, right? Fanboys relished in the idea that their preferred brand was doing something different, which of course ALWAYS means better.

2. Sony didn't correct that narrative. Why should they, though? It was to their benefit to have the fanboy wars go in their favor. And at the end of the day, it would be meaningless because they'd still sell these games to the both PS4 and PS5 owners like they alluded to themselves.

So if you want to call out any particular media, call out the ones that twisted this story in the first place. I personally have the receipts from where I actually read what Ryan said back in May and said that it sounded like they'd be doing something very similar to MS's cross-gen approach. Guess the response I received when voicing that view...

But many others didn't read his statements, just like they don't actually read the statements of "other" execs. Instead they eat up whatever narrative sounds best and aligns with their own biases, even though those stories are only twisted for clicks, too.

It's not a hate train against Sony. It's both fanboys and click-bait churnalists chasing their own tails rather than admitting that they created the problem in the first place.

Well Jim Ryan did say PS5 games would be exclusive to PS5. It's hard to read the below and think he meant anything else.

I'm the biggest PlayStation fan here, been there from the start, but mislead is precisely true. You could even go so far to say lied by omission. They allowed a widely believed narrative to flourish and did nothing to correct it.

Did that say those games or any others wouldn't be on PS5? No. Thats why I'm not flat out calling them liars. But they let that mindset get propagated and even doubled down saying we believe in generations.

I still think they believe in generations. And the quote was more along the lines of new generations should get features not possible on previous generations which we will get.

Spiderman is not going to be 60fps and have raytracing on PS4. You will be getting a game on ps5 not possible on PS4. They just should have been more upfront about it, people would have understood.

It's a fair point. A lot of people are on the fence about whether they want to upgrade or not as it isn't a cheap investment. Especially with everything going on. Buying a new box is fine and dandy, but if you can get away with playing the majority of the games on your previous machine, maybe that works out better for you. It would be nice to know for sure which games are going to be 100% exclusive and which will suddenly have a PS4 version showing up.

That being said, I preordered and am full steam ahead.

Alright, there seems to be a lot of flip flopping going on. I as a PlayStation fan have to call it out. I know there were many people including me who were excited that PS5 games were going to be exclusive to the PS5. Sony never mentioned them also being on PS4 until this past week and now everyone is saying it’s good for the consumer? Come on. The point is MS announced cross gen support and were DESTROYED by game media and Sony fans. Sony straight up lied about it. They said they were not doing it. As a big PS fan I'm 50/50 about this.

Obviously it's good business to not ignore 100 million customers. I am one, and am happy that the PS4 will continue to get support.

However, it also means I'm not desperate to get a PS5 at launch. Never played Demons Souls and I'm sure the remake will be awesome but if that is the only true exclusive at launch then I can wait. I also can't be bothered jumping through hoops just to try and get one at launch.

So unless the confirmed launch lineup is more attractive to me I'll wait it out until Ratchet arrives.

If it's BS, then let me explain to you the Spider-Man situation.

MM is a contained story a la Lost Legacy and First Light. It's $50. Or $70 for the version that includes the first game Remastered.

You can get it for PS4 (it was believed to be PS5 exclusive since June). It's part of the PS4-PS5 upgrade system (that Sony didn't believe in, because they believed in generations).

But "it" only refers to Spider-Man: MM. Owners of OG Spider-Man, even those with all the DLC, are currently left behind. The upgrade path is to spend $20 more on the $50 Side Story, to get that voucher code.

Just like with Control, Sony's way to upgrade existing players is to get them to rebuy what they already own. They don't even say if the Ultimate Edition's Remastered voucher will be eligible for the PS4 Spider-Man. Will those PS4 players be able to play MM on their PS4 but not the OG?

Would this lead to $90-100 Ultimate Editions for GOW2 and HFW, with 'Remastered' original titles included? GOW2 also isn't confirmed as a PS5 exclusive - the PS Blog labels it as Coming to PS5 right below the cross-gen Hogwarts Legacy

I keep having PS friends asking me for information and being disappointed over and over again. Almost all of them plan to get it when God of War comes out and they don't even believe Sony anymore on a 2021 release. Some are considering a XSX for multiplatform games and Game Pass, considering its biggest exclusives look to be as far as God of War.

Sony IS doing a horrible job on a lot of stuff related to PS5.

This is obviously entire speculation but I think the reason Sony has kept shtum about cross gen titles until the very last minute, was due to PR after seeing how much heat microsoft had gotten for doing the same thing.
Why else would they mislead people all the way up to preorders? also they only "officially" announced that the PS5 will not support PS1,PS2 and PS3 games at the very last minute as well. I'm getting serious early PS3 vibes from Sony, the console itself is a great price but charging £70 ($90) for games in the UK is ridiculous. I'm normally hyped for next gen and run out to buy at launch, this time though i'm holding back for a year to see what happens.

Really depends on how different and/or improved the versions. Ratchet and Clank is PS5 only because of SSD loading, and unless the PS4 versions of PS5 games are exactly the same, there's as much to complain about as the differences between XB1, Series X and Series S games.

I'm excited to get a PS5 to go along with my XBox Series X. I like the idea of PS Plus having AAA Sony Exclusives as part of the service. I don't think most people have a problem with the games coming to the PS4, the problem is Sony marketing these games as PS5 games. SpiderMan: MM and Sack and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are out in less than 2 months, you don't find it strange that they are just now letting people know that they will also be available for the PS4? They waited til the PS5 was available for pre-order and then told people through a blog post, they didn't even bother mentioning it in their showcase. Its obvious they hid it in order to use them as incentives for people to buy a PS5.

I only heard them saying that they believe in generations when asked about MS plans for the xbox. Meaning they believe in generation but that doesn't mean that all games will only be on ps5. Especially when the console launches.It was Sony saying we aren't MS and we believe in generation exclusivity.

They never said, that i know of, that all the game, especially in the first year, would be only ps5. I mean why would they say that when they know 100m ps4's are out there? they waited the very next day after the event to clear it up. Sales started in small quantities that morning. So that isn't enough time for that to be the reason. Now if it were a few days or week?

Anyway, i think like most times online people say this and people say that, then this or that becomes gospel and everyone follows.

Let's be honest.....both Sony and Microsoft have done a pretty poor job as of late communicating on their next gen console plans. The one thing I can say for Sony that I cannot say for Microsoft is that Sony is bringing the games, by the bucketload. The variety of games on offer in the launch year window is looking fantastic. Microsoft may have one, Halo Infinite. Sony has a plethora. I was fortunate to secure a ps5 preorder, and I hope to secure a series x preorder on the 22nd. I want both companies to do well. Gamepass is tremendous value, especially for somebody like me, who skipped the xbox one this gen....so many games to play on day one that I haven't played before. Fantastic. But Sony has got the exclusive game on lock, imo.

They did to an extent but there's still some games that are console exclusive.
But looking at Spider-Man mm there's certain aspects that will probably not make it to the ps4 same with horizon.

The ps5 will absolutely be the best place to play these games however. Most people were going to buy the console anyway I believe Spiderman didn't influence a large portion of players to buy it and horizon fw will benifit tremendously from.next gen in curious to see how ps4 turns out.

This is classic Sony, start a narrative, shout it from the rooftops and let it's dedicated fanbase and news media outlets fan the flames then much later on quietly reverse it. I think they misled them AND that some of this audience is actually stupid. How many generations of consoles have these people seen with the same pattern? New console comes out, most launch games have a previous gen port, and none (except rare exceptions) actually look like they're only possible on next gen consoles. It takes 1-3 years after launch when games really look only possible on next gen.

This is why there never should've been a debate between MS committing to cross-gen games for the first year or two, and Sony have only PS5 games. It didn't matter because regardless games won't really look next gen until next year when both consoles can start having next gen only looking games.
