Not surprise.
1. Is a new console
2. They starved people for information on the new console price and they made the pre order for the next day. A lot of impulse buyers.
Smart move by Sony imo.

SullysCigar1744d ago

Not so sure about the 'impulse buyers', people have been waiting for the preorders to start for months!

VenomUK1743d ago

Amazon UK sold out in less then 20 minutes and they get the lion’s share of stock allocation.

TallDarknWavy1743d ago

I don't know why physical retailers are carrying digital only consoles. Digital consoles spell the death of physical media and the monopolization of publishers to charge whatever they want on a digital store. If they had any brains or balls, they would refuse to sell any digital only consoles to keep used game sales alive. When there is only digital media say goodbye to common game sales, there's a monopoly on pricing and no need to compete with anyone else. Doesn't anyone understand how free markets work?

Physical retailers are just desperate to have anyone come in their store and buy things, they'll sell a digital only console even if long term it spells the death of them. Idiots and cowards, they are.

Rude-ro1743d ago

😂
Nope.
It is just the most wanted gaming product.

DashGamer1743d ago

I'd say it was a surprise to many due to the fact that Sony had promised that we would get an alert ahead of time. But they just decided to turn on pre-orders within minutes. Sure, it follows a similar pattern that the company taken in the past, but they kinda went against their word here.

Profchaos1744d ago

Anyone who was around last console launch will know get on it asap or wait two months

RpgSama1743d ago

Yep, some people were complaining about Sony Misleading people about pre-orders opening today only to wake up today and find out that they were sold out, I tried midnight EST first and then 3 hours later midnight PST, was able to secure mine from best buy, today started at midnight, not at a comfortable 8 am. The demand is just too high.

Profchaos1743d ago (Edited 1743d ago )

Yeah I ordered mine at 730am AEST the press conference started at 6am here caught most people off guard as yeah that warning was never really given. I thought that in the states they were saying that pre orders were the following day?

RpgSama1743d ago

@Profchaos

Yeah, the following day starts at 12 midnight, that's when all these online stores (Best Buy, Gamestop, Walmart, Amazon, Target) updated their sites and opened pre-orders.

There was just too much demand for anyone to wait a good 8 hours until you woke up the next morning.

medman1743d ago (Edited 1743d ago )

@rpgsama
Yes. I tried accessing best buy's crippled system earlier in the night, no luck. Error after error. Woke up during the night and gave it another shot at around 2-230 eastern time usa. Still had many problems and had to refresh cart and payment screens several times, but finally it worked out and I got a preorder. We should not have to jump through hoops this way. Sony and the retailers dropped the ball on this. Sony's global head of marketing said in August that gamers would be given ample notice about preorders and would not be blindsided. I would like to call that man incompetent and a liar directly to his face.

monkey6021744d ago

Everywhere that did take orders got fleeced within the hour.

As more businesses open throughout today expect more of the same

monkey6021743d ago

Gamestop here are selling "PS5 queue orders"
So many people think they're getting one with it but the list is endless. They'll just keep letting people buy into the list. Most probably won't see their turn until 2021. They need to market that more clearly. I'd hate to be working there this Christmas 😬

CorndogBurglar1743d ago (Edited 1743d ago )

Thats how Gamestop has always done console launches. They keep taking orders and once they blow through their initial stock you go on a waiting list. But you are right. They've mostly been transparent about that in the past. But Gamestop is hurting and has been doing very underhanded things with customers for the past few years, so it doesn't surprise me that they would trick people into thinking they are getting a pre-order console.

Profchaos1743d ago

Yeah our stores in Australia has their 2020 stock sold out in the first hour next shipments will be early 2021.
Reminds me of the ps4 which I missed November and I got my console just before Xmas

SullysCigar1744d ago

It's PS5 lol if you snooze, you lose!

roadkillers1743d ago

Fuck em then. The little kids can get it, while the adults get up for work like everyone else. I'll buy when the exclusives cone out

SullysCigar1743d ago

Lol bless... The exclusives like Demons Souls that will be there day one?

Good luck with that, my friend!

roadkillers1743d ago

^ I played and enjoyed the hell outta Demon Souls on PS3. It is a great game and anyone who hasnt experienced it should. The moment you meed the first dragon and the path and run from the fire, amazing. Then you find out there are numerous ways to kill enemies (Like hide in the corner and shoot the dragons tail until it falls off).

Amazing game, but just like any other game, if you played it enough you want something different. Same with Shadow, I played that game so much I didnt beed the remake.

I'll be waiting for the 2021 libeup!

SullysCigar1743d ago

^ I can't fault your logic there!

As it turns out, there are plenty of games in the instant game collection that are on my wish list, so that's an added incentive for me too - especially if they are confirmed enhanced for PS5!

EmperorDalek1744d ago

I understand the frustration. We were told that there would be some warning before pre-orders went live, yet here in New Zealand they started out of no where earlier today.

TheLordOfStuff1743d ago

Yeah we got told the same thing in aus, then nothing but American news saying tomorrow, then an hr later eb games opened them without warning lol

azzkikr85021743d ago

I was in the ebgames store getting a game for my switch when I asked the sales consultant when would preorders go live. He said Sony would do the same thing as xbox to allow everyone a fair chance to buy.
Luckily I didn't listen and jumped on as soon as the preorders went live.
Thank God I was able to secure 1 each. Ebgames is now taking preorders foe the 2021 shipment.

Profchaos1743d ago

Yeah I got mine in the first hour but there was no warning EB games did send out a how to order your console instruction last night I guess hinting at the pre orders but nothing saying it's coming. Downside of living in a time zone like ours

Rematch director says there’s “room for more than one take of football”

In an industry with countless FIFAs, sorry EA Sports FCs, Sloclap’s Rematch is a brilliant arcade football game that feels incredibly unique. Putting players in the shoes of an individual player, the new multiplayer game is essentially Rocket League without the rockets and cars… it’s football.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos10h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop6h ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

DivineHand12516h ago

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim15h ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn213h ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

andy8516h ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Tacoboto16h ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-6415h ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…
