Resident Evil 8 PS4 Version Cancelled Due To Development Problems

The PS4 version of Resident Evil 8 has reportedly been canned due to Capcom's difficulty in getting the game to a state in line with its vision.

sushimama1783d ago

"So they decided to drop the last-gen versions of the game to make it so the game had no loading at all (not limited by last gen hardware) and push the graphic overhaul further without the limitations of last-gen tech in mind."

Sounds like excellent news to me.

IRetrouk1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

What's all these limits they talk of??
what about the sliders!!?? Absolutely everything can be scaled down with no worries/s
👀
Said this for ages now, next gen games taking advantage of the new hardware wont run well or at all on these old consoles, sliders or not lol. Makes me a wee bit more excited knowing it's a full on next gen game, hopefully vr is included again.

RazzerRedux1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

Yep. And here we have the first example of a game where the importance of SSD is highlighted to the point that a non-SSD version had to be scrapped.

"load times because the game has you travelling through most of the Village and had a lot of load zones. Because there's a bigger focus on exploration this would lead to the last-gen console versions having notable issues, and it was holding back how pretty they could make certain scenes"

Whoa! SSD allowed them to make it "prettier"?

Software_Lover1783d ago

Its not that they couldnt make the game work on last gen hardware, its that the loading times would have sucked.

The newer versions (PS5 XSX) would have been vastly superior.

1783d ago
IRetrouk1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

@razzer, Crazy that, it's almost as if all the devs who where saying how important the ssd and io stuff was were telling the truth😳

@ software, not just loading.

"Okay, I got some clarification on why they made RE8 next-gen only, when it was cross-gen previously. With the updated graphic fidelity overhaul they're doing (still in progress), the way RE8 was designed lead to past-gen consoles having a lot of pop-in/long texture loads/"

bouzebbal1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

The ps5 version knocks re7 out the park.. Re7 looks cool but not close to what was shown on Thursday. We need a version that does the devs vision justice. And please Sony make it psvr playable

1783d ago
IRetrouk1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

@ taste
Again, not just load times, the first quote mentions pop in and texture streaming issues, the second and third mention graphics and those load times you talk of, like it, dont🤷‍♂️

You dont think the pretty part has anything to do with the ssd and io setup? So the fact it can load more and produce higher res info at a much faster rate doesnt help things look prettier? You sure about that?

Kribwalker1783d ago

texture pop-in is also a product of loading

RazzerRedux1783d ago

@Taste_buds

Yeah, but why was loading an issue?

"updated graphic fidelity overhaul"
"because the game has you travelling through most of the Village and had a lot of load zones"
"a bigger focus on exploration"
"holding back how pretty they could make"

Graphics and overall game design. Saying this is just about "loading" isn't telling the whole story.

Outside_ofthe_Box1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

I had a whole argument with timotim about this a while back and he kept insisting that the Witcher 3 is "proof" that last gen/weaker hardware doesn't hold anything back if you focus on next gen first. Can't wait for him to say that these *actual* developers are wrong.

Game developers want the core experience to be the same ACROSS all platforms that they plan to release on. They will scale things back on the more powerful hardware to get the core experience the same if they choose (or is forced) to not scrap the weaker hardware.

Making a game next gen only is not anti consumer at all and saying as such is just fanboy banter.

IRetrouk1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

@krib, yep, i never said it wasnt, you ignored me saying "not just load times" and the rest of the conversation to be fair, not really sure what your point was🤷‍♂️

Sharky2311783d ago

But I thought every game on xsx would work on Xbox one? Is this gonna be a problem for Xbox going forward? That’s been their big message this whole time!

1783d ago
IRetrouk1783d ago

@ tastebuds, so it does help things look prettier, glad you finally agree👍

mikeslemonade1783d ago

Yessssss! I hate cross gen.

xX-oldboy-Xx1783d ago

What does this mean for ms 1st party studios, will they hold all their games back? Is halo really just a polished xbox one game?

Seems the strategy from ms is biting them on the are 5 months out from release haha.

I applaud CAPCOM for this decision. Nice how the title of the article only says PS4, it matters not though.

NeoGamer2321783d ago

Essentially the only reason they cancelled for last gen was around transitions that would create load times. With out the problem around load time transitions they would've kept past gen versions.

This was a specific thing they wanted in the next game, and only next gen could achieve it. There are many other games that may not be constrained by load time issues and therefore be able to ship on last gen consoles.

mandingo1783d ago

No one said said anything about prettier stop making things up. The controversy was that an ssd can’t magically add extra power. ie framerate resolution gpu power cpu power

Hakuoro1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

It's unfortunate that a certain group of people don't even want generations on their console. And that same group refuses to accept that true next gen games will be developed around the SSD.

rainslacker1783d ago

Must be those lazy devs. Cant even move a slider so they just scrap the whole last gen version

Gaming1011783d ago

It's actually far more complex than just "sliders"

The size of the game world changes, AI and physics change, it's just too many computations for the game to run properly when going from something like PS5 to PS4.
You need to understand programming and game design.

1783d ago
UltraNova1782d ago

Forget everything this dev said about RE village and why they scrapped the last-gen versions, if that doesn't convince you, just think for a moment that a gaming company as large as Capcom coincided and accepted losing all those potential sales from 150+ million consoles. That alone is proof enough that last-gen tech is severely hampering devs ability to realize their vision going forward.

ChristopherJack1782d ago

Certainly could be scaled but not to a degree the devs found acceptable without compromising too much or costing too much(time, money, effort) to workaround. Back in the last PS360 days, it wasn't uncommon for one version or the other(sometimes both relative to PC) to miss something very basic, like grass, in order to work & that was on top of commonly abnormally low resolutions.

Sucks for those on a tight budget(who can't afford or justify the next gen console) with the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X as iirc, both manufacturers stated that there won't be any games released for the premium platform that will not be available on the base model- so some games may be able to run at an acceptable state on those 2 premium models but will still be scrapped because of the base model. Guess we'll have to wait & see if that remains the case. I think the PC minimum specs would be a good indicator on whether it'd have ran on said premium models.

FITSniper1783d ago

Yeah I don't view this as problems so much as last gen limitations.

Software_Lover1783d ago

I agree. If a dev wants to move on GOOD FOR THEM. Make the best game possible and fulfill your vision.

bishup251783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

Villanelle -
"^ SSD allowed them to make it prettier??!

IMPOSSIBLE!!! 😡 "

I'm sure it will account for something.
Still not sure what. For everything else the other components still have a purpose.

RosweeSon1783d ago

Yeah I think the resident evil series is pretty covered on current gen old remake of 1 modern remakes of 2-3 code Veronica, 4/5/6 and 7 Revelations 1-2 and a few others I won’t talk about 😏🥴😂✌&# 127995;😜 fair play for them to just go all out on their next gen game. Not chasing the money but prioritising a top game instead

neutralgamer19921783d ago

But Ms wants us to believe their first party studios can deliver next gen games that will run on current gen consoles

This is what we have been talking about you go next you jump all in and have 3rd parties support current consoles for few years since their interest is always trying to sell as many copies as possible

We have a generational jump with technology so we as gamers should be excited for what is possible look at launch titles for ps5

A game like ratchet and clank wouldn't be even possible I don't think on current consoles with all the rifts

DOMination-1783d ago

MS never said all games would w9rk on current gen. Just that their first parties wouod be supporting both during the transitional period.

Hakuoro1783d ago

I honestly am skeptical that Microsoft will actually ever embrace next gen fully. They want to keep milking gamepass and PC too much.

Neonridr1783d ago

I mean how does the PC version work then? Will it say that you need a NVMe drive in order to play the game or something? Sounds ridiculous.

I_am_Batman1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

On PC you don't have a hard cutoff so it's perfectly normal to have a game that runs differently on different builds. Because of the higher variance, you'll always have a number of PCs that are just too weak to run the game properly, even on the lowest settings. The effects range from long loading times, bad performance, freezes, crashes or even failing to boot the game up at all.

On consoles the hardware is set and you only have few different configurations so it's a much more controlled environment. When the game runs a certain way on one configuration, it runs that way on millions of devices.

On PC minimum spec requirements exist for a reason and at least SATA SSDs will become a requirement for some next gen exclusive games. That won't necessarily mean that you won't be able to run the game from an HDD, but you'll have to deal with long loadingscreens and the game might freeze every now and then to load in the needed assets.

On consoles a game that constantly freezes would probably not get approved by the console manufacturers. If the game's vision is too ambitious to work on current gen consoles, most devs would hate to deal with the struggle of making it run by compromising on their vision for the game.

RazzerRedux1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

It isn't current-gen. It was going to be cross-gen. Now it is only next gen.

ps3rider1783d ago

Profchaos1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

Nope most of the games they showed were not achievable on current hardware.onky 3 or 4 undue titles from the presentation will be cross gen.

Ratchet and Clank, horizon forbidden west, re8 and I believe Spiderman mm will be ps5 titles

Xbox was the company that wanted parity Sony from the start has stated ps5 Gabe's that are not capable of running in ps4 are desirable as they give people a reason to upgrade

1783d ago
rdgneoz31783d ago

@tucky Yah. All feasible if you want to nerf the graphics or size of the games. Even Ratchet and Clank with 15+ second loading times when you "jump almost instantly" to other worlds...

zeuanimals1783d ago

We don't know how the SSD is improving the design of some of these games, but we do know devs are emphasizing more verticality into their maps. Spiderman already made great use of many rooftops as you'd often find people hanging out or partying on them, and that was while they were heavily constrained by the PS4's storage system. I'd imagine they're gonna improve this, maybe give life to interiors too, let us be creepers and see into buildings while NPCs are walking about. That seems to be their end goal. They gave life to the tops of buildings and especially the streets and local businesses, but the vast majority of the game world is filled with concrete, steel, and glass featuring paintings of rooms. The interiors are absolutely devoid of life and detail and they have to be otherwise the console would explode.

The same could happen with Horizon, especially since we're very likely gonna be able to mount flying machines. This would require the devs to emphasize a sense of verticality which we already know they're doing, as far as the depths of the ocean go. Maybe they're giving new life to the interiors of ruined buildings and all across the landscape.

Hakuoro1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

tucky

And ya know RE8...

And again, PS5 buyers actually want games that are designed around the SSD and next gen tech. We don't want "enhanced" last gen games. We don't want games where the SSD just loads things faster we want games that don't load at all.

And I guarantee that nearly every Sony game will have elements in them that aren't possible on the older consoles.

I don't want my PS5 games to be made for PS4 and scaled to PS5 it's as simple as that.

rainslacker1783d ago (Edited 1783d ago )

I dont think we saw enough of most of the games shown to know if they could be cross gen or not.

Graphics wise, I think overall, they could have achieved it with lower quality assets and what not. But without knowing more detail about the actual game design, it's also kind if hard to say what next gen features will be used.

But, ssd can improve graphics, as you can keep more memory free, which means keeping higher quality assets in memory. Quick scene transitions has already been shown off to great effect with R&C, and I've seen some other cool uses from various devs that I think will start to drill home just what super fast access to game data can do for game design.

If you looked at game design advancement over the years, the biggest bottlenecks were memory size because you had to store most of the stuff in memory, and I/O speeds, particularly centered around the hard drive. Using high speed SSD helps mitigate both problems

I think these are concepts that are hard to visualize, but some people seem really intent on denying that it's a much needed advancement.

WOW, I got 13 dislikes on my comment.
I said something to make the current generation player happy now 13 next-generation players are not happy

Melankolis1783d ago

It's not "dislike", it's "disagree".

Hell, you may comment that Horizon : Forbidden West will also come to PS4, people could be happy, but they will disagree with you just because it's impossible.

Basically those people disagreed with your comment, not disliked it.

rdgneoz31783d ago

People don't have to dislike you or your comment to disagree with the facts of what you're saying. You can hate the way someone says something, but still agree that it is the truth. In your case, Sony has said they will have PS5 exclusive games, while MS has mentioned no next gen exclusive first party games for the first 2 years. Some games like the ones they showed are only possible on next gen systems. Watch the trailers and gameplay in 4K and check out the level of detail within them. To get them to run on current gen systems would require loading screens, reduced graphics, and limiting the scope of the games. With the PS5, the SSD and I/O throughput are making these games possible, especially with Ratchet and Clank showing off the capabilities of the system.

There will be cross gen releases, but many of the big name first party / exclusives (and 3rd party games like RE 8) will be making the jump to next gen to be able to make their visions possible. If all games came out on every gen, there would be no reason to get a new system beyond better graphics and less / zero load times. But then you wouldn't have the huge scope of some of the games coming out because previous gens can't handle it.

rainslacker1783d ago

I'm all for games being cross gen if its within their design. But on this matter in general, I want games to start advancing sooner rather than later. I dont want to wait several years into the gen before we start seeing what can be done with the tech. I already know what can be done with this gen, and it's been mostly the same as what we had lady gen, just prettier.

Yeah it sucks for those that dont move forward right away, but at the same time, there are still plenty of games for those people to play.

It's not going to change, because it has worked for them.

Yes it is....for the investors.

anast430d ago

@Lord

Definitely true for live service games.

anast430d ago

Game writers want shorter games to make their jobs easier.

The rest of us have different tastes in games. My 5 favorite games of all time are Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, RDR2, CP2077, Last of Us II, and BG3. These are all mostly long games and the fun to be had is through the roof.

BrainSyphoned430d ago

Back in Cyberpunk again after a run through Elden Ring and Skyrim before that.
With Stardew Valley 1.6 coming out soon I'll be hitting 1k hours in it as well. I like some short pallet cleansers like Returnal or Pacific Drive but they are just quick hits between replays of immersive titles or for long work weeks.

Demetrius430d ago

ChasterMies430d ago

“Everyone always says that longer is better when it comes to games”

100% not true. The majority of people don’t finish games, and “short” games continue to sell. I think the gaming audience has long moved past the dollar per hour fallacy.

shinoff2183430d ago

I really don't think alot of us have. I'm willing to spend 30 dollars or so for a shorter game. The more I get out of it the more I'm willing to pay. Aside from a few. Uncharted day 1, last of us day 1, etc. Jrpgs day 1, their usually longer. I'd buy gta day 1. The more I get out of a game the more I justify the price. I'm not trying to shit on shorter games at all because I like those to. It's just how I prefer to spend my money.

Resident Evil 8 Quest 3 Gameplay - Ethan

CG writes: In this video we use Praydog’s free-of-charge REFramework VR mod for PCVR using the Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop Combo. It’s an iconic scene from Resident Evil 8 (Resident Evil Village). As already extensively documented, the VR mod is pretty fantastic and adds motion control support. Running on Quest 3 almost feels like a native VR game aside from no interactions with inanimate objects which the game doesn’t really need to feel like VR. With such great visuals and character models, Resident Evil 8 Quest 3 is up there with the best VR experiences to-date. In this video, we role-play a little with the Ethan character who messes-up pretty badly in this scene. Would be interesting if developers actually included an audio option to mute just the player character so people could make their own dialogue for these types of videos. Either way, listening back and we think there’s some resemblance to the Darkness character from The Darkness video game.

I really can't wait until we have headsets with wider field of view. I enjoy VR, I've owned a Rift, Quest 2, Valve Index and now a PSVR2. Village is great on the PSVR2 but I always have this sense that there are blinders on my eyes like the police use on horses. Pimax is unfortunately the only company offering a very wide field of view and I say unfortunately because they are a pain to set up and deal with overall.

It's been so many years since VR first was released and progress has been really slow. I realize the sales aren't making companies investing a lot of money into the space but I think it would take off if they fixed the FOV, smaller form factor, and clever solutions to motion sickness. I've worked up my tolerance to VR motion sickness but that's something that needs to be fixed if the general public will pick it up. I'm glad the PSVR2 has foveated rendering (one of the very few headsets to have this feature), games look great on it.

I hope the Apple Vision Pro will be a large step forward in these areas so that in 1-2 years time we'll get a cheaper version with similar specs.

bunt-custardly529d ago

Problem with wider FOV is you need more screen real-estate to be rendered making for more GPU power requirments. I assume the way the headsets are designed have this in mind aside from as you say Pimax. Having tried Pimax 8K the canted displays cause eye strain issues for some people. So there are trade-offs with these things.

Resident Evil will need one eventually, our favourite old school characters are getting old in game and they won’t be around for much longer. Capcom should use a remake of the original Resident Evil as their reboot and update the game so the Arklay Mansion incident happens in the 2020s so the characters are young again. After this game they can do anything they want with Chris, Jill, Claire, Leon etc. Hopefully they won’t continue the new timeline in real time with us so the characters won’t age so quickly again.

Halo needs one because I think they’ve done so many novels and the like where they expect you to have read everything to understand their main games.

Same could be said for Kingdom Hearts, they expect to have played all the side games and even the current online game they have going on with the upcoming mobile game Missing Link. KH4 could have started a good softboot for the franchise but even in KH3 with Maleficent’s side plot where she was looking for the black box, those plot elements are from the MMO Kingdom Hearts X. It’s kind of a joke now how convoluted the story has become and yet they still continue to do it.

Assassins Creed needs to go back to the beginning and make a game what AC was all about. I thought AC Mirage would do that but the main character is someone introduced in Valhalla and the gameplay video I saw he could teleport, like it was some power similar to Dishonoreds “Blink” which is beyond silly for this kind of game, it’s not even the First Civilisations technology aswell.

Rebel_Scum577d ago

Mass Effect is one but don’t include the reapers.

Strike Series needs one as nothing has come out since the PS1 days.

And maybe something from the Landstalker/Alundra lineage.
