Naughty Dog writer Halley Gross reveals that players can actually complete The Last of Us Part II by just evading most encounters.

In fact, avoiding encounters is pretty much the way to get through the game on the hardest difficulty because resources are so much more scarce.

I avoided as many encounters as I possibly could on Grounded Mode, which wasn’t easy to do by any means for me (looking at the hospital level at the end of the game....😭but it was an unforgettable experience.

Hopefully that means there's really good sneaking mechanics then! Love trying to sneak around a whole area to stealth kill everyone!

I hope they release a Grounded mode later on like they did with the original. I'll definitely tackle and trophy both of those.

Grounded is a step up in difficulty from Survivor.

Enemies are stronger, you are weaker, and the HUD is removed. Checkpoints are also scarcer, and supplies further limited.

Like @Synthetic said, Grounded is a step up in difficulty. It’s a nightmare, but one that’s worth all the trouble once you see the credits roll in the end. HUD removed, stronger enemies, and a few other things really do add in the experience.

The game does punish you though for doing this you lose ammunition and new weapons and resources if you avoid all the encounters in those environments
