I wanted the original Ps3 so bad for its backward compatibility. but when i got it, i probably only played 4-5 old games during the PS3 life time. Backward compatibility is a nice to have like you stated, but i feel that Sony have a great track record of providing great games to their fans. So theres not a lot of time for me to go back to playing old games. I'm having a hard time keeping up with the new games, let along go back to old old games.

We know they have the emulators for PS1 and PS2 games. Those should be a given for the PS5. PS3 emulation has improved greatly over the years but generally was done by one guy (or a very small team). Just imagine if Sony got hold of their work and really refined it themselves and got it running full speed. The PS5 would be crowned the ultimate multi-generational platform instead of the SX being the self proclaimed platform doing that.

Only people in doubt are those who want Sony to fail but if anyone has been following PlayStation. Long enough they should know Sony will support their device

It's essentially the same thing. Smart delivery doesnt have to be tied to a distinct build of the game though, and it can be done through a patch using BC style, where it may not be a distinct version, but that isnt a hard and fast requirement.

One thing smart delivery seems to do is that you dont necessarily have to have two distinct versions in your library

Seems pretty straight forward to me. This is just more FUD created by the media to get hits.

This is nothing like the XBone which dribbled out a few games per month over a period of 7 years and still haven't finished.. More akin to the PS2 /PS 1 B/C or PS 3 Phat/PS 2/1 emulation.. Sony has already stated that the Tempest Engine tech contains as much power as the PS 4, so it isn't unfeasable that its a stripped down PS 4 tech, with faster GDDR 6 RAM emulating GDDR 5. The PS 5 could then upsample it to 8K textures, as seen in the 8K HDR 10+ GT Sport demo.

But there are some PS3 titles that many wanted/wants to be backward compatible.

There is no reason to be against this. It's 2020, a competitor is being currently-unchallenged in this area. A PC emulator and illegal download of an iso shouldn't be the easiest option to play an old PlayStation game. Especially when you still own the disc.

There is no cell complicated tech, otherwise there would not be uncharted or any other remaster on PS4.
Licencing is the issue. Those licences had 10 years expiration date (or whatever deal was) so now Sony has to renew them aka pay again to those people for their work (music, engine, design..other words intellectual property)

Thing is, now those games would not see sales in millions only thousands, so they are not profitable to renew them for next 10 years.

Some deals go smooth, others not so much.
Konami and Kojima split resoulting in never ending licencing desput.

Laws and deals changed over the years, but for some old games we don't know what the terms were.

Hope they can transfer as much games they can to ps5 as we don't have time to play them all in one generation.

It's a cool feature and some old games are timeless. But what's stopping you from playing them right now on the consoles they were made for? Your PS4 works I assume. Not sure about the others you got because gamers end up selling their old consoles assuming the new one plays their old games. Like my PS3 digital games not being compatible on PS4.

And why is Nintendo always excluded from the conversation? How come my old floppy discs don't work on my new computers?

Eventually, some old tech and old software are going to no longer be compatible unless we digitize everything and update the old software repeatedly. But even then, something's got to give. I have a new phone. Some of my old apps aren't compatible. And on my older tablet. Some of the apps that did work got updated and no longer work on my tablet.

Basically who's going to keep spending the money, manpower and resources to keep updating everything so it's not lost to history and for how long should they do so?

I'm all for preservation. But nothing lasts forever.

I get where you're coming from and agree that technology moves on.

However, when you look at the rising costs of gaming per generation and that digitally was marked as a means of saving money but on release cost as much as retail, I think it's fair that people don't want to drag out an older console each time they have an itch to play a game.

Likewise, those who have heavily invested in current-gen online games won't want to have to give that up understandably if the game isnt playable or re-release on the new console.

I do replay older titles time and time again and I feel its an important option to have. Considering the architecture of consoles have become more PC like and streamlined with less custom components over the generations, it is more than reasonable to expect BC going forward.

Sophisticated, it's stupid to believe that BC is going to be continued 20 years from now. Not unless it's all digital. But that takes money and a lot of work. Not half @$$ like Microsoft. Because some of the Xbox and 360 games still don't work on Xbox One. I wouldn't expect on Series X. Are you going to call Microsoft out on it? Are you doing it NOW? Then why expect Sony to?

Cerny says PS4 and Pro are baked in from the GDC presentation. But nothing says PS6 will use Blu-ray. PS7 may use magnetic memory storage. PS8 may end up being cloud only. PS9 may end up using those spores in the trailer like some type of compound. I'm guessing emulators will be built into the software at an atomic level.

But unless it's built in like genes, some of these games, software as a whole, is going to vanish. You can't stop the inevitable. I wouldn't expect Sony or any company to keep updating software that ran on something 50 years old. They're not historians.

And? You and everybody else, the reason BC is requested is so if you want to finish an old game, or play with friends who haven't upgraded you can.

Surely MORE games to play regardless of which gen they're from is a great thing to have?

Also means you don't have to have another console plugged in if you still have a backlog. And if you still own a lot of games (especially digital) you know you still have access.

It's also usefull when you've played all the launch games you want to play and there is nothing else you want to play for a while.

Here's an example, I love Overwatch, my friends love Overwatch. Without BC I would have to keep a PS4 plugged in to play it as not all of my friends want/can get a PS5 at launch.

I already have my Switch, my Xbox, my PS3 and now my PS5 plugged into my TV.

Somethings gotta give.

With BC, no problem, I can carry on playing with my friends and enjoy next gen games on one system.

Somethings gotta give. I dont think anyone disputes the convenience. The bigger point seems to be that you arent precluded from playing old games if you have the old system, and then there is the discussion on how much influence the feature has over peoples purchasing decision.

For instance, if I didnt have a ps4 this gen, ps4 BC is not going to be a major factor for me. I have a ps4 this gen, and a pretty significant backlog with it, and even if the ps5 didnt have BC, it wouldnt be a factor in me buying a ps5.

I think there are just more important things that most people actually look for in a system

Cerny said, they are testing games in "PS5" mode but that cpu has special "Jaguar compatibility" mode which can be choosed if there are problems with games. So they did what they could do and now it is primarily about testing and deciding if:
1)game will run in gpu boosted mode and cpu boosted mode
2)game will run in gpu boosted mode and cpu compatibility mode
3)game will run in gpu normal mode and cpu boosted mode
4)game will run in gpu normal mode and cpu compatibility mode

They mentioned, that gpu can run in PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5 mode. I dont know if PS4 games can run also in PS5 mode, so that would be 3 modes for gpu and 2 for cpu.

Thats lot of testing. I dont think we have to afraid if games will run in BC, but in what BC mode they will run.

You write about PS3. Ok. I dont know how it corresponds with my comment, but I will try to reply. You usually make BC for one gen back. Sony did PS2 BC with PS2 hardware inside PS3. You simply cant put all previous hardware into next consoles. So you need some type of software emulation. On PS4 was software emulation of PS3 impossible (rumours say PS3 cell processor is more powerful than PS4 Jag processor - in its own way - it has compute units which normal x86_64 cpu doesnt have.

On PS5 I believe full software emulation is possible, but I understand, why Sony didnt go for it. Its long software development. They even dont have full PS4 BC tested. And that is much more important.

On MS side it was different story. X360 had much mor simple 3 core processor. It can be emulated well also with Xone Jag. There were some timing issues though. If you have working software emulation of X360 on Xone and you have also working virtualization (it is not full software emulation) of Xone on XSX (or XSS), you have also working X360 on XSX (or XSS). You of course can run into some problems, which were not present on Xone, but that can be handled. So you are practically without much work here.

What you want from Sony now to make BC with PS4 and full software emulation with PS3. Are you crazy or what?

Emulating the PS3 is not impossible, there are emulators on the PC for all consoles available, granted some may not work correctly, but some work.

The issue is not with the emulation, but rather the licensing required in order to have certain games emulated.

For instance, Sony or Microsoft can not just do BC for any game, they need the developers/publishers permission in order to emulate.

Remember when Microsoft said BC on the xbox one was not possible, oh how times have changed.

Any software developer can get a game to emulate on different hardware, they may publicly state it is not possible, but they are quite frankly not telling the whole truth.

I just think companies should be straight with their fanbase, rather than say "it is not possible" they should say "we can do it, but we do not think the fans want it" and that applies to Sony or Microsoft.

1. Vanilla PS4 Titles
2. PS4 Pro Enhanced Titles.
3. PS5 Enhanced Titles.

To keep PS3 games on PS Now, Sony needs those hardwares active and that is expensive. With the PS5, Sony can have all games on a single platform and then sell them as a digital format or rent them as a service format.

Streaming format is for casual gamers. Nobody is going to buy an expensive PS5 for PS2 games.

As long as the medium to major games are compatible it's OK. Every BC they add can also be sold digitally. I've missed many games like horizons and spiderman

I expect this and demand it. I own over 130 games on the Playstation 4 network, about half I legit purchased the other half are the "free" games we get for paying the PlayStation Now service cost.

If Sony didn't allow me to download my digital titles and play them on the Playstation 5, I would never ever buy another non-exclusive from Sony again.

I think the average gamer understands that PS1 to PS3 were all hugely differing CPU designs and not based on X86/X64 CPU architecture like the Xbox is so some difficulty exists that Microsoft doesn't have to deal with, however that doesn't change the fact that emulators exist online for PS1 & 2, and the PS3 emulation is progressing smoothly. Sony can do it with some effort and they should do it.

Anyways, for myself, there are virtually no old games in PS1-3 library I would care to replace outside of Resistance Series, but millions of other gamers DO.

I am mainly concerned about the Playstation Store allowing me to download my Digital Games for PS4 and play them directly on PS5.

Some dumb people will say "oh they don't need to do this". Yes they do. Xbox does it, the PC has done it forever, Android and Apple do it with their respective stores.

Hopefully Sony is very very clear next week on how they will handle this.

Alrite mate? I'm not trying to be a nob, I respect your opinion on this, however I've just looked and I've got 409 games, 112 of them with ps plus and about 30 of them 3rd party physical copies. So about 260 games I paid for digitally off psn.
I honestly don't expect or demand that I can play these on my ps5, I really don't.
It would be a nice bonus if I could, but in no way would it affect my decision to get a ps5 or buy digitally again.
I didn't buy them thinking that I would be able to play them forever on every future PlayStation console.
Yes it would be convenient if I wanted to play a game from previous gens, but if I really wanted to then I could just hook up my old console.
I really don't think it's as big an issue as some people think.
Anyway, I do expect a large majority of digital ps4 games to be playable on ps5.
Just my thoughts mate.

if I buy a game on PC it works forever. I hate that the games I spend my hard earned money on , may not work next gen consoles?! what kind of a dumb model is that? I want all my PS games to work on the latest console. It's honestly ridiculous! BC should always be a thing and I don't care if I have to pay $100 extra, because thats a negligible amount compared to the thousands of dollars spent on PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games. Seriously, this needs to be a bigger issue. if they support full BC instead of stupid PSNow, it will be another reason to upgrade. Xbox is going with a very smart approach supporting their large library of games since XBOX. This is a win for the customer. We need Sony to think about all the money we spent on the games of previous consoles.

MS is so sneaky, they are making it look like that they are being pro consumer with their aggressive Backward Compatibility support, They are doing this because they know they can profit from these old games, xbox gamers only bought halo forza and gears these people are going to have to buy these old games to experience BC.

And if they are successful in enticing consumers, ps4 owners who are going to jump ship, "will buy" old xbox games to experience bc, large profit for ms. While sony won't be able to enjoy extra profit because playstation owners who wants bc probably already own the games they would like to replay on ps5.

To the people unhappy about PS5 having no backwards compatibility: just keep your PS4...?

Personally, I'm buying a new console to play new games. Yes, it'd be convenient to play everything on just one machine, but for Sony it's an expensive requirement to deliver that, honestly, isn't in high enough of a demand for it to be profitable.

I have my PS1, PS2 and PS3 for the odd occasion I want to visit nostalgia town. My PS4 will serve the same purpose when I buy my PS5, so a lack of backwards compatibility isn't a deal breaker for me.
