Ghost of Tsushima seems to breathe new life into the open world genre - Console Monster

After months of waiting, we finally got to see some gameplay for Sucker Punch Productions new game, Ghost of Tsushima, and boy, was it worth the wait. But is it more than just a pretty action movie?

I actually prefer the genre of Ghost more than The Last of us. I am more interested in the tech and the game-play than the setting. Meanwhile for ghost I am looking forward to every aspect.

It depends on what you are looking for I guess. An open-world experience with a cool setting or a strong narrative more linear experience. For me I'm going with TLOU hands-down. Might pick up GoT at a later day, maybe after PS5 drops. Game might even look and run better on that system too. Not overly impressed by GoT at this point so it's an easy call to make on my part.

I can wait som more really. I just don't feel the breath of new life in this one as of now. Hope they can up the ante a bit with some patches for it running on a PS5 or something in the future since I will most likely pick it up at a later point. PS5 is a guaranteed day 1 for me anyways! And I will greatly appreciate the backwards compatibility, and utilize it no doubt!

Guys I even said I wasn’t trashing the game. I just said it looks a heck of a lot like other games out there. It’s a minor gripe so it’s not that big a deal. As for the pc comment the game will be on other platforms besides PlayStation within 6 months of release. I don’t think Sony has the balls to go all in but they definitely want in on the market. It is the major reason for the recent rebranding of the studios and even talks about Sony games on other platforms.

I feel like this is going to be another Days Gone. The game got hyped so much that after people got disappointed with the game, while in fact Days Gone is a good game.

As with all open world RPGs, it all comes down to the story and side quests. If they nail that, it will be great.

Not every open world rpg needs to reinvent the wheel. AC Odyssey was great, even though it just built upon origins. The little things they have done with the waypoints and the interacting with the nature are interesting innovations even if they are small things.

AC Odyssey was trash. If you like a game riddled with microtransactions, brain dead grind to incentivize paid progression, dumbed-down parkour (Which already wasn't challenging in the earlier iterations) and a wannabe witcher combat/quest system with all the bells but none of the substance, then the standards are pretty pretty low.

I haven’t seen this game done anything different from other games in the same genre such as Assassins Creed, The Witchers, RDR, or Tomb Raider.

Not saying that this game won’t be special, it very well might be because it is Sucker Punch after all, but I don’t see it breathing any new life into the genre, at least not yet based on the trailer.

Can't wait for Tsushima. Looks amazing. However, gameplay did look a bit uninspired. Though, I'm pretty sure there is a morality system they didn't show us yet. Every Infamous had it.

Assasins creed samurai. The wind mechanic sounds good but it doesnt look good, looks like smoke out of nowhere, poorly implimented.
Overall I dont think this game is going to be amazing, thinking it will be averagely good.

GoT looks awesome, but I didn’t see anything that could be considered revolutionary to the open world genre. That’s fine, but if you’ve played many open world games you can clearly see inspiration from games like Shadow of Mordor, the newer Assassin’s Creed And Witcher 3.
I don’t feel people on this site like this being said, but the way you explored BoTW combined with the freedom in gameplay was to me a game changer for the open world Genre. (Though it wasn’t perfect either considering the towers you had to climb)

Yep. BoTW is open world design done right in terms of freedom, exploration and player agency. Most other open world games only offer an illusion of freedom as they're constantly telling us where to go and what to do.

The original reveal had me pretty impressed by this one. The state of play kind of ruined it for me... I hope people enjoy it though for real.

I would love to see From software reboot Tenchu like this though. I think the open world approach could be interesting with the gore and blood sprays in next gen. Not sure exactly how to pull it if though.

Game reminds me of Tenchu lol that’s a good thing though.
