Final Fantasy VII: Remake vs Original Gameplay Comparison

Gamereactor: "We put the imminent Remake and the 1997 classic face to face for a good influx of nostalgia and to see how several iconic sequences have been reimagined on PS4 vs the good old PSX 23 years later. Remember Tifa and Cloud like that?"

I always thought it was strange that Cloud looked that square-ish (heh), even 23 years ago. In the enemy encounters he looks fine, why did they give him that boxy look outside? All the characters for that matter.

Also, in certain CGI cut scenes they keep that strange boxy look. Again, they made the characters cool in other cut scenes. Why does Cloud look cool when he gets the bike, but looks boxy in others? It's not like they were saving disc space in the CGI cut scenes anyway?

My theory was that some of those CGI cut scenes simply had to stay like that due to time constrains, while focusing on others became a priority. The outside battle character models could look better, but since those cut scenes were already made they decided to keep the boxy look to not redo the CGI cut scenes again.

gamers say the shinra tower and top plate is still 2D pre-rendered.

This is the funny thing I just want to point out- They say 1997 in the thumbnail. That is NOT how FF7 looked in 1997. . . that is some port or something from later. PSX graphics arent all perfect and smooth and with zero aliasing LOL

You can see a much more accurate picture of how it looked here for instance:

That IS 1997... NOT how it looks in that thumbnail.

Heres a screenshot.

I remember playing PS1 games on the PS3 in HD. Ohhh, the pixels were obvious

Loktai1846d ago (Edited 1846d ago )

Well even then the actual internal resolution wasnt scaled up, it was just "converted" to progressive scan, but the ps1 games on PS3 werent changed outside VERY basic smoothing.

But yeah .... I hope people dont forget the "roots" and what games were really like, if for no reason
than just to appreciate what we've got now. Its a good experience to play some of those old systems on a CRT for at least a while and "Get used" to it, and then go boot up a modern console and just see how far we've come.

Hell.. .Anyone who finds a CRT on the street, find yourself a PS1 or PS2 (if its a PS1 make sure its not the super early launch model SCPH-100X(1000,10001,1002, because games like tomb raider have heavy banding- There are plenty of scph-1001 with a revision C graphics chip but you need to be sure.(this is the holy grail of PSX, its got the better graphics chip and the really high end DAC and RCA jacks, if you can find a japanese SCPH-1000 with rev C hardware (Even MORE rare) and the S-VID jack youre a god).

At launch the Saturn version of Tomb raider looks better than the PSX version - the revision C chip which is a nicer chip, replacing the older one and MOSTLY totally compatible used a different kind of RAM, they were making up for installing slower ram during a ram shortage...that chip makes it look better on PSX.

Ok I am off topic as hell but the point is- Go play Tomb Raider then boot up shadow of the tomb raider or uncharted lost legacy or something "comparable" - and realize that we're actually about to take yet another generational leap BEYOND that.

I would say "go look at Atari" but I only intend to compare apples to apples- 3rd person console action games in 3D.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit12312352d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.

The effort here is impressive. Hope it doesn’t get taken down.

He should have done it in Dreams though, the limitations of having done it in LBP are obvious.

solideagle262d ago

ah Dreams had so much potential, I think they should have released it on PC. one can only dream about dreams sale and popularity on PC. PC has modding/creative crowd and I think it would have been a hit

I love seeing projects like this. So much passion and time.
