No Matter If You Like Final Fantasy 7's Demo Or Not...The Graphics Are To Die For

HPCritical Writes: I never played FF7 when I was younger and then never picked it up after that either. The demo wasn’t perfect in my eyes, but the one thing that nobody can debate is that the graphics and some of the design elements of the game are perfect.

Honestly the best use of Unreal I've seen this gen BY FAR!

anonymousfan1937d ago

The pre-rendered stuff in the demo was very cool looking but the actual gameplay was all indoors... I wish there was some outdoor stuff because the indoor environments were pretty plain.

isarai1937d ago

Yeah that would've been cool

DevilOgreFish1937d ago

@ isarai
wait till you see on pc at 60fps ultra settings.

_SilverHawk_1937d ago

What about the graphics can be so beautiful youd rather live so you can actually play the game because if you aren't alive then you wont be able to. Graphics to live for

BiofourceGun1937d ago (Edited 1937d ago )

"wait till you see on pc at 60fps ultra settings."

I remember plenty of FFXV on pc using a lot of nvidia features. i would imagine nvidia to still be on board for more SE games. Nvidia has powered all of their recent tech demos as well.

Muzikguy1937d ago (Edited 1937d ago )

I got a great feel from the demo comparing it to the original

the engine does display quite nicely for the game. but i also think other developers have already made use of the same engine in many different ways as well. from Hellblade, Gears5, The Inpatient, Hidden agenda, Spyro Trilogy, and Grand Blue Fantasy Versus. along side the FFVII remake. and all of which have no resemblance to each other. there are many other great game engines too which may also get you same results. but for what you can get from UE4 it remains very intuitive middleware.

isarai1937d ago

Im not saying others are bad, it's just the only game ive seen using unreal that doesn't have any of the typical jutter, muddy bump maps, or texture pop in other games using it have, specifically when pushing a high visual fidelity. And it did so at a very smooth framerate and beautiful high resolution. Every other example I've seen this gen has to sacrifice something, but with this game it's a very polished "have your cake and eat it too" situation i just haven't seen another unreal game deliver to this level. Of course this is purely from a console standpoint.

TheHateTheyGive1937d ago

Days gone is the best looking unreal 4 game, 2nd would be gears 5, this would be 3rd.

Nerdmaster1937d ago

Although I still wish console games let us lower graphics quality for higher framerate. For some of us that is a desirable trade. Or just let us set an unlocked framerate, since from my experience around 40fps already makes a big difference, and if the console is able to run the game at constant 30fps, I would guess there is some power left to run most of it in slightly higher framerates if unlocked.

Exvalos1937d ago

Frames didnt really drop to undesired levels so I'm not sure what your crying about here.

Nerdmaster1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

I am "crying" about 30fps. I thought I was clear. I never said anything about framedrops.
I don't think my request for unlocked framerates (so the game can automatically raise it whenever possible) is unreasonable. It would require very little work from developers, and those who value image quality over good framerate wouldn't see any differences.

galmi1936d ago

the game definitely needs a 60fps mode, looks good and all but wasnt really blown away. Maybe cuz Ive played crisis core before

Nerdmaster1936d ago

And I just remembered that FFXV had this option when played in PS4 Pro. You can play in an unlocked framerate that while it can reach 60fps, it would fluctuate between 40 and 50 fps when necessary. I don't know why this isn't an option in all games... In base PS4, even if the highest framerate gets around 40fps, it's already 33% higher than 30fps.

BioShockGX1937d ago

ehh
FF15 graphics are better.

zidane13411937d ago

No, they are not. Not even close dude. The aliasing is so bad in that game, not to mention how muddy it looked when it first came out.

Elda1937d ago

Agreed. FFVIIR graphics & resolution looks way better than FFXV on the PS4 & PS4 Pro,FFXV resolution looked cloudy, foggy & muddy.

Tekken666341937d ago (Edited 1937d ago )

I guess does that mean UE4 is a better engine than Luminous. FFXV was the main showcase for the engine since before they changed it's name.

Tech51937d ago (Edited 1937d ago )

@ tekken
luminous was not that optimized at the time being compared to where UE4 is at right now.
it's not clear though if Luminous still needs more hardware power to be on parallel with UE4 on some things.
as of last year the luminous engine has been demonstrating most of it's newest features on a RTX 2080.
so it may still require a powerful setup in order to demonstrate all of it's new advancements.

rainslacker1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

No. Maybe on pc vs console, if we had a pc version to compare it to, but ff7r has some of the most detailed rendering I've seen in any console game to date. It's almost feels too sharp, kind of like when you experience your first 4k tv. The textures are very well done, and the level of detail on things is astounding. Just that train at the beginning had more detail put into it than the entirety of the leviathan model used for ff15, and it wasnt just like that for the cutscene.

Elda1937d ago

The resolution as well especially on the PS4 Pro.

Muzikguy1937d ago

It did look good. I don't want to get ahead of myself though without seeing more. So far it's looking like what FF games of this day and age could really start to be like

V0MIT_M0NSTER1937d ago

Honestly, that's how I feel too. It was a pretty good demo and I am excited to see more, but I do want to see more and know exactly how they plan to release the parts still to come.

It Shouldn't Take Expedition 33's Success to Remind Square Enix That Turn-Based Still Sells

TNS: Expedition 33 was the wake-up call Square Enix needed, telling it turn-based RPGs are still popular, but that shouldn't have been the case.

True, but if it does get it through their thick skulls, then that works.

Although, the Dragon Quest 1 + 2 HD remakes will be turn-based and (the worst kept secret) Final Fantasy IX remake should be turn-based I would imagine. Let's see if any newer games go turn-based too.

thorstein12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

DQIII HD Remake was turned based and very successful. Then there was a really obscure turn based game came Balder's Gate 3. I heard it might have done well.

Profchaos8h ago

I wouldn't be shocked if they switched ff to the vii remake combat system

PapaBop4h ago

It won't get through to them though, despite E33's success, they still won't risk going fully turn based for their big budget projects simply because they are still in the mindset that it needs to be action combat to appeal to the mainstream audience. I hope I'm wrong but don't underestimate just how stubborn Japanese execs can be

DivineHand12515h ago

While it is true that Sqaure Enix has moved away from turn based games compared to how they were in the past, there is a good reason for it.

Older gamers will know this but during the ps2 era, we were flooded with turned based games from Japanese studios and this created a form of fatigue back then going into the next generation.

When Square released FF13, they received heavy criticism for making the game turned based like every other FF game and not doing enough to innovate. This is why they made FF15, FF7 Remake and FF16 have real time combat. It gave the series a fresh spin and has brought in new fans to the series.

I personally would be happy with either turned based FF or the real-time combat version we see today.

Shane Kim14h ago

Remake and Rebirth have "turn based" if you set it in the settings.

Lexreborn211h ago

Dang wish I saw your post before I made mine because we definitely feel the same way lol

Profchaos8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Yeah hit the nail on the head but its like ww2 games we get hundreds of them then a decade of nothing and people start missing them i think we're going to start seeing them return

Claire, dragon quest even yakuza have seen turn based return

andy8514h ago

Only need to look at their own game DQ 11 approaching 10 million to show there's a market. And that's not as big of a name as FF

Tacoboto14h ago

Another article about Expedition 33 and Square Enix and turn-based games? This is starting to sound like propaganda.

The game didn't sell because it's a turn-based game; it sold and is enjoyed because it's a really freaking good game that released completed at a good price without gamer drama attached to it. No Mtx, no wait-until-it's-patched, minimal bloat, a self-contained story, no multiplatform BS. Just a solid original game that absolutely nails what it intended to do.

Redemption-6414h ago

I was just about to say the same thing.

anast13h ago

This comment should have a 100 upvotes, at least.

CrimsonWing6914h ago

Maybe try actually listening to the fans who have supported the series for decades. This habit of ignoring your core audience just to chase people who were never interested in Final Fantasy in the first place makes no sense. And when that approach fails, doubling down on it is beyond baffling.

The battle system has never been the main reason non-FF or non-JRPG players stayed away. Gutting the series’ identity to chase a broader market doesn’t attract new players. It just alienates the loyal ones.

Keep going down this road and we’ll end up with Final Fantasy Fortnite abomination or a F2P Battle Royale game.. Oh wait…
