AMD targets a 50% performance gain with RDNA 2, talks about hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing

During its financial analyst day 2020, AMD shared some new details about its RDNA 2 GPUs.

Someone in another article pointed out correctly that it should be 50% "efficiency" gain. The image states: Performance/Watt. The article states it correctly, but the title does not. Shocker.

One of the reasons people keep saying that a 12TB chip will perform like a 16TB chip...although the mat still doesn't add up, but whatever.
People were quick to jump on this idea, when it's not really the case.

Lolololl did you think AMD, who is always a dollar short and a day late in the GPU world, would actually deliver a better, less performance taxing Ray Tracing feature then Nvidia.. N4G is a funny place

No. It means to output 12TF, it would use less power to achieve it over comparable GCN architecture.

Performance wise, a flop is a flop. A set number of floating point operations per second. If something takes 1tf to process, it's still going to take that much to process on either chip.

Rdna will do it with less power. However, there are some optimizations with RDNA which can make it require less flops to perform an task compared to gcn, which will increase performance. Those things it does better because of the processes involved do not equal 50% performance gain.

I've been disappointed too many times when it comes to AMD and their graphics cards. I've been getting hyped since the Hawaii leaks. I'll expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised if I get something.

Same here, I don't enjoy only saving $30-$100 on the AMD card compared to the equivalent Nvidia card, but then wait months/years for driver updates just for it to perform correctly. I remember how hyped people got about Navi, then they actually hit the real world and let everybody down, now nobody talks about them. Guess they want to get the hype train rolling again, sell us some bs about parity with consoles, and blah blah blah new architecture blah blah.

Not sure if you frequent N4G a lot, but any AMD hate/skepticism will get you downvotes and backlash, it's mainly a console community on here and they believe AMD is all great, because that's who their overlords choose to supply the hardware.

Not too impressed with RDNA 1. Their drivers have been largely crap. They STILL haven't figured out the black screen issue people have been having since 5700 launch. Their opengl and Unreal engine support is STILL crap.

I bought the XT at launch to replace my old 970. I wanted to stick it to the green team for their outrageous pricing. But it seems that *I'm* the one that got stuck. First and last AMD card.
