Their team created the most advanced Xbox 360 emulator ever made. Too bad it's only available on Xbox One.

autobotdan1940d ago

Not true it will also be available on the next xbox series x. It's only too bad for you if you dont like or want xbox consoles

NeoGamer2321939d ago

That is not true. I would love to be able to run XB as a virtual machine on a PC. Just another place where I could play my XB only games.

JonTheGod1940d ago

But it's not emulation, you simply download an Xbox One version of the game, posing as emulation.

Locutus_of_borg1940d ago

thats a good point, i have always wondered if it was emulation or like you said, surely if it was true emulation then every single game should work upon startup, rather than waiting for microsoft to release them..

Atom6661939d ago

That's not really accurate either. It's actually pretty impressive.

RazzerRedux1939d ago (Edited 1939d ago )

From Atom666's link:

"But fundamentally, Xbox 360 back-compat works on the principle of an emulation layer. There is some hardware assistance and - yes - some 'secret sauce' (Microsoft didn't want to be drawn on how the emulator supports Xbox 360's VMX128 vector units, for example), but the team is now at the point now where everything an Xbox 360 can do, its emulator can mirror in software."

Yes, it is emulation which is technically more impressive than if it were a straight port.

@Locutus_of_borg
"surely if it was true emulation then every single game should work upon startup"

Every 360 games is wrapped in the emulation layer and downloaded. For it to be able to do that then the emulated layer has to be created for each game. A mass emulation of 360 games would violate all kinds of licensing agreements between Microsoft and third party game publishers.

Orionsangel1939d ago

@Locutus_of_borg It's not about games working. MS caps them off. Only the games they license are allowed to work on it.

rainslacker1939d ago

@locutus

Ms hasn't released a stand alone emulator, which is why it doesnt work the way you suggest. When you download a 360 game on x1, the emulator is attached to the executable, and you launch the emulator that then launches the game. Something referred to as a wrapper program.

This allows MS to control the emulator and not get it out into the public as easily. Also allows them to honor their licensing agreements with publishers or developers. Plus, there are settings options which are applied to the game individually, so the user doesnt have to fuss around with finding the right thing for a particular piece of software.

Does it not get tiring being so negative all the time?

1Victor1939d ago

Well when you’re right you’re right regardless of positive or negative feelings 🤯

gravedigger1939d ago (Edited 1939d ago )

Well, the best one and the more efficient is native backward compatibility, like PS2 and PS3 ( fat version ) had.

Orionsangel1939d ago

Really one of the best emulators of more modern games that's available to the public is CEMU.

gravedigger1939d ago

I'm talking about consoles, not emulators on PC, though.

Native BC os far better than software emulated on consoles

Article says:
"what you’ll actually see in the titles that ship on Xbox Series X will be unlike anything that you’ve seen before.”

If (it's a big if) the team is still talking bacwards compatibility, then newly added bc titles will have enhancements. Enhancements like better resolutions and visual fidelity. Then I don't know if the team will release 600? (?) more BC to exsisting log. Waiting on E3 confirmation of this.

Yoshida claims PS believes Xbox is their only competitor, truth is they don’t have one any more

True, they have pretty different audiences..and some People just have both at home or a PS and a PC that emulates more or less everything from Nintendo.

Knightofelemia1d 18h ago

Xbox hasn't been a competitor since the XB360. Last generation and this generation Sony has been running circles around Xbox. As for Sony vs Nintendo Sony runs circles yes but I don't really see Nintendo as competition. Nintendo does their own thing and it works.

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

LoveSpuds1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

MS were doing so well that they had to start selling their games on their main competitors system which in turn results in around 30% of each sale going to Sony as the platform holder.

I do think tjat MS' fortunes will improve now that they are actually selling games rather than giving them away for pennies on the dollar.

Something that occurs to me is that the more success MS published games have elsewhere, the more stark it will become that selling games is much more profitable than renting them. If that becomes highly noticable, I wonder what the shareholders (who ultimately run the show) will make of a service which has stagnated for years?

crazyCoconuts22h ago

PlayStation doesn't compete with third party games, they compete on consoles. They profit from third party games. If you're not comparing consoles there's no point in comparing.

drivxr1d 17h ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Christopher1d 16h ago

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?

PanicMechanic1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Great analysis. Just joking.

Pretending like companies give a f about where they “rank” against each other is just super retarded. This isn’t the World Cup.

Tell me, how does “PC” compete against a brand like PlayStation? It just doesn’t make sense at all. What you just said, is complete and utter nonsense

BlaqMagiq121h ago

I don't think PS cares about being in this so-called "last place" you came up with when they're making profits hand over fist.

microsoft wanted to crush sony into dust and they had the money to do it, but with such weak leadership it was always going to fail

Reaper22_1d 16h ago

Had the money? They still have the money but the industry has changed since xbox 360. Microsoft is the number one publisher in gaming. I'd hardly call that failing.

IRetrouk1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

The industry hasn't changed though, just ms, Microsoft was the no1 publisher for a month in december 2024, the actual no1 for fy2024 was tencent if game sales are all that's being counted.

Profchaos1d 15h ago

Money doesn't mean you'll be successful large corporations have entered and failed before like Nec

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
