Wii U.S. Installed Base Now Leads Xbox 360 by Almost 2 Million

The Wii freight train can't be stopped. The console now has almost a 2 million lead on the 360 and it's installed base is well over double that of PS3.

The Xbox 360 did pretty well for itself in October, selling 371K units following price cuts for all three models. The Wii, however, did far better, selling 803K units and leading the industry to $1.3 billion in sales. Thanks to the Wii sales spike, the Nintendo console now has a U.S. installed base of 13.4 million units compared to the Xbox 360's 11.6 million (despite the fact that Microsoft launched a full year earlier).

haha and don't forget soccer moms and infants. I saw some kids playing the Wii at the store, they were throwing their arms around and having a great time but after about 5 minutes the sales clerk came over and told them the controllers weren't actually controlling the game.

Although this is bad news for M$ this is even worst news for Sony! Sony owned the gaming world with the PS2 and PS1 and now they are dead last in this console race and from the looks of it is going to stay there with the PS3. Nintendo will take the crown back and M$ will stay in second but is going to sell double the amount of consoles from the original Xbox and the Wii we'll go on and sell over 100 million..

I used to be a Nintendo fanboy. I loved Nintendo so much.

The SNES is the pinnacle of console gaming and nothing has ever matched it in terms of sheer awesomeness.

Now, I've always had a Nintendo console, with a Sega console as a back up.

NES - Master System
SNES - Mega Drive

But with the PlayStation, I had Nintendo as back up

PlayStation - N64
PlayStation 2 - GameCube

All the Wii did, was make me take up the 360 as my back up console to the PS3.

Which is a shame, because I've owned every Nintendo console since the SNES on launch (or the Christmas after launch) and the Wii was basically like a knife through the heart to the point I would be there day 1 for a Sony and Microsoft console, but not Nintendo.

Sorry to be overly dramatic, but I'm yet to find something on the Wii that makes me think "wow, that's awesome and could never be done anywhere else".

I am 24 years old right now. When my parents purchased me that precious Nintendo Entertainment System when I was a kid. I became a gamer.

Then of course, the SNES and N64. God, those were good times. Although I didn't have a Game cube, It was a good console for it's time. More powerful than a PS2.

I know it will never happen but it's the only way to save Hardcore gaming and destroy Nintendo. Nintendo is not needed anymore, all they do is follow in terms of technology, and churn out sequels to severely aged IP. Smash Bros Brawl is Melee 1.5, Mario Galaxy is sunshine 1.5 (which was Mario 64 1.5 so you could say it's the true successor of Mario 64, which should have come out in 2002 not 2007), Zelda TP is better on gamecube.

I mean seriously, I only own a Wii to exercise with Wii Sports and Wii Fit and when the friends come over but seriously it's a sad excuse for a console. Nintendo shat on their most loyal fanbase, the hardcore gamers. Those that remained loyal must have been traumatized so hard when they realized that the Wii is basically a repackaged gamecube that they still live in denial, poor fanboys =(

Microsoft should let Sony do the hardware. The software should be a hybrid between PSN and Xbox LIVE, in that it allows user generated content and very big downloadable games but at the same time is as robust as Xbox LIVE. 8 gigs of XDR2 RAM, a cell 2 with 128 SPEs and 8 PPC cores emulating all prior consoles and running next-gen games. A teradisc superior to blu-ray, a 2 terabyte HDD and 10 Gigabit ethernet, WiMax compatible. Sadly that's never gonna happen.

Sony already did.. What most people do not get is that what Nintendo did this gen was copy the PS2 format in many ways. Tons of games for every age group of every type. PS2 library is filled with many of the same crap games that are on Wii. Yes an 8 year old consoles does have more hits in its library but that will change with Wii in time. Most developers were on the PS2 bandwagon before the console launched. They didn't give Nintendo the same treatment.It really all comes down to fanboys, because only a fanboy will say something is ok on one console and bad on another simply based off the name of the company making the console. No, the same fanbase that actually bought those consoles and made Nintendo a profit or saved them from total catastrophe. Both the Gamecube and the N64 were profitable and were awesome consoles. So, that would be the people who bought Gameboys, Gameboy Advances, and DSes.

Designing systems such that every piece of hardware gives a profit is a nice strategy and all, but it's completely worthless without an actual install base (this is known as "stating the obvious"). Almost no one actually bought the 'Cube or the N64 and as a result, Nintendo's profits took major hits each time.

Worldwide and in its entire lifetime, the 'Cube managed to sell something like twenty-million units.

As for the N64, it sold about thirty-three million in its lifetime if I recall correctly. There was also that whole debacle of greater development costs as a result of using cartridges.

Compared to say, the sixty million who bought the NES or the fifty million who bought the SNES, yeah, the N64 and the Gamecube were *total* not-financial-catastrophes. Surely Nintendo's viability as a company has *nothing* to do with its dominance of the handheld market with the Gameboy (over a hundred million units sold), the Gameboy Advance or the DS (80 million each).

Yeah, the Wii is beating everyone and it is by far the worst console.

Let's look at the number of good games on the Wii compared to the other consoles:

Number of games rated 90 or better on Metacritic:
Xbox 360 = 17
PS3 = 9
Wii = 8

Number of games rated 80 or better on Metacritic:
Xbox 360 = 125
PS3 = 84
Wii = 38

Number of games rated 75 or better on Metacritic:
Xbox 360 = 204
PS3 = 120
Wii = 62

The Wii has far fewer good games than the other two consoles and yet it is outselling them. Then again, the Wii largely appeals to a completely different demographic. I mean, there is some overlap, but it really is selling in almost a completely different market than the PS3 and 360.

And you call yourself the voice of reason? lol, graphics don't make a game. See Lair, which has better graphics than most next-gen games and it's crap. Killzone looks great but it's just another military fps. Gears is generic but it has high reviews not because of graphics, but because of hype and the game is actually good. Uncharted has great reviews because of its excellent production values, storyline, soundtrack and gameplay; the graphics simply are a plus. Wii is poorly rated because it sucks, its games are last-gen, and it attempts to replace control methods that worked for others that don't. Nintendo should have sold the wii with Wii motion plus since the Wii started.

Uh, no, you can't have the same gameplay for the simple fact that the Wii can't process it. If the PS3 has 1000 enemies on screen in HD, the Wii will only be able to handle 100 in standard def with less detail, worse physics and worse AI. That makes the game inferior, not its resolution or shader effects.

The PS2 wasn't complete garbage because it wasn't underpowered when compared to the gamecube and the Xbox, the only thing the PS2 couldn't do when compared to the Xbox was advanced shader effects. Hell, the Gamecube was crippled by its little sh1t disc that's why it didn't get multiplatform games. Also, the Dreamcast was the least powerful console and it wasn't garbage since it wasn't underpowered like the Wii is compared to its rivals.

Casual gaming doesn't push the boundaries of gaming in terms of art or technology, it only pushes the boundaries of the industry beyond its current markets. That's ok as long as hardcore gaming exists, which is the one that pushes the boundaries of this form of communication in artistic, scientific and technological ways.

Getting ports of last-generation games, not pushing games technologically, and that's not just getting "HD games" or "advanced graphics", but it's also physics, artificial intelligence, gigantic and complex simulations, etcetera.

Artistically, it's not simply creating new ways of making games look good like Zelda was with cel-shaded graphics or like Valkyria Chronicles which has its own art style, it's also taking game soundtracks, cinematics, storylines (and not simply in terms of how engaging it is, but how interactive and how many paths a story can take), and new ways of interacting with the game.

It's utterly pointless to introduce a new control method if you're going to drop every single button and not add more horsepower that allows for more things to happen in the game. That's why the DSi is also an insult to hardcore DS owners because it adds new features to the portable device but hardly something significant that aids it into processing these new inputs to make gameplay better. They're basically saying "Well, now you're gonna have to sacrifice what you were doing in favor of something else" instead of keeping everything that worked, make it better, and adding something revolutionary to the experience. It shouldn't be about trade-offs, it should be everything PLUS a lot of things that are new, not just a single gimmick and pass it off as next-gen when it clearly isn't.

Sidar & Product, I love it, you guys always take care of the wacky posts before I can. Mahr also. I was waiting for someone to bring up the weak car analogy. Also with the PS2 it took basically its late 2nd year on before it got the games its been known for. Ppl expect the Wii to do this in half the time? why because its selling twice as fast? Like I said, third parties expected the PS2 to be the market leader. What the Wii and Nintendo has done is unprecedented, in that they went from last place to claim first once again. No one could have foresaw that. Also are we still going to use the term gimmicks and fads when for two yrs now its been outselling its competitors combined for the most of its lifetime? Get real.
