The next update for Super Mario Maker 2 adds Link from The Legend of Zelda as a playable character.
Although Super Mario Maker 2 on the Nintendo Switch received its final major update back in April 2020, it still occasionally receives a smaller update. The latest one follows on from an update in 2022 that addressed several issues.
Super Mario Maker 2 has received a new version 3.0.2 update more than two years after the last one, and patch notes are available.

I still say the series peaked with Galaxy. They've put out good stuff since then, but nothing really matched up.

I figure they'll bring more characters over time.
