Stadia's Game Prices Are Absolutely Bonkers

Stadia's game prices are stupidly expensive considering the age of the games and the fact that only Nintendo can do Nintendo tax.

Releasing around a time when traditional consoles are having a lot of discounts across the board isn’t doing Stadia any favors

2013d ago Replies(3)
Vits2013d ago

Yes, however Stadia also have that free tier coming up next year. And once that is available, the only thing that the user will pay for is the games. Therefore those higher prices are most likely necessary for the viabiliy of the platform.

I still think is not a particular good deal for most people - myself included. But if you are one of the few that don't have any sort of console and uses a "Potato PC". Stadia will be the cheaper option available. That said I'm not sure if those people even exist. Because we are talking about people that lack decent hardware but somehow have pretty good internet connections.

Ripsta7th2013d ago

what about controller and the ultra chromecast? will those be free also? or just the account?

Vits2013d ago

@Ripsta7th
You will not need those to use Stadia itself. The only requirement is Chrome and a "potato computater".

However for TV and Smartphone play things are different. Because you will need a chromecast ultra and the controller at least until Google offer support for more devices.

D__RAiL2012d ago

Ripsta7th works great on my phone or browser...I just hooked up my xbox Controller and worked great.

DarXyde2012d ago

"Therefore those higher prices are most likely necessary for the viabiliy of the platform"

You might have a point if we were not talking about Google. If they are serious about market penetration, they should and could ask for major startup subsidies from Google/ Alphabet proper.

" That said I'm not sure if those people even exist. Because we are talking about people that lack decent hardware but somehow have pretty good internet connections."

I think most people on Stadia will be casual gamers. Makes sense when you think about: if you do not have any hardware, you probably are not much of a gamer and of you do game, portability is likely an important factor. The bandwidth consumption alone makes paying for extended periods of time impractical. As for having a pretty good connection, people may stream a lot of 4K content on Netflix or have a lot of users at home (assuming someone has no intention of traveling much with Stadia). People can also upgrade their connection speeds.

This is not a defense of Stadia. I will not buy into this system at all. Just offering my perspective on this.

ChristopherJack2012d ago

What's with all those dislikes? The idiot beneath you mentioning the controller and chromecast got several likes for being unable to comprehend your comment, bringing in chromecast & controllers when you mention PC, something most people already have in some form, almost all of them having some form of keyboard & mouse.
The internet is stupid and these people on this site are a special breed of stupidity.

Vits2012d ago

@DarXyde: "You might have a point if we were not talking about Google. If they are serious about market penetration, they should and could ask for major startup subsidies from Google/ Alphabet proper."

It's actually the opposite, I'm only bringing this point up because we are talking about Google.
The company that put their fingers in as many pies as possible and kill the products that they deem not viable enough without any regret. I'm pretty sure that they already invested a lot of money in getting Stadia to work. If it doesn't show any profitability and as fast as possible, the service is going down. I'm pretty sure the Stadia internal team don't wish that to happen.

@DarXyde:"I think most people on Stadia will be casual gamers. You see that is the thing that I found so bizarre about Stadia. At first you may think that it's a product that is more focused on the casual crowd. However the service works in a way that is not really "casual friendly". Because they are not offering a subscription based service like Netflix and co. that most people know how to use and find rather cheap, but actually selling the full games at a high price. Meaning that people have to actually research before investing into a game.

And there is also the connection issues that I mentioned. Sure there might be people out there with that stream a lot of 4K on Netflix and therefore already have a good enough connection. But even those might be limited by data caps that I heard are not the uncommon in the US and part of the EU. And for those that don't have a already good internet conection upgrading it more or less make the investing in the platform even more of a not so good deal.

@ChristopherJack

That is N4G for you. After a while you just don't care anymore.

D__RAiL2012d ago

its true..most of the prices are pretty cheap right now

MasterCornholio2013d ago (Edited 2013d ago )

Alot of those games are cheaper stores like Steam for example. Then you have to take into account the 4k Tax which the other versions don't have if your interested in playing the game at its best on the service.

The pricing is not very good and it will bother many people looking into the service.

Edit:

Here's one price comparison. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is selling for 65 dollars on Stadia or around 75 bucks for the 4K edition. On Steam you can get the same game with 4K being a possibility and all the content for 24$. So your basically paying 50$ extra to play the game on Stadia with 4K or 40$ extra if you go with Stadia Basic.

Steam: https://store.steampowered....

XabiDaChosenOne2013d ago

You made me realize that their is fanboys of literally anything, gives me a better understanding of why their is still an Xbox camp.

demonic362012d ago

That's very true! check out reddit to see the truth and don't be blinded by false media.

DVAcme2011d ago

@demonic36 Okay, moron, what did you play before Stadia? Or did you never play anything beforehand? Cause the PS4, the XB1, the Switch and Steam all offer a BAZILLION more features and incentives than Stadia does.

When is the interview at Google? 😏

demonic362012d ago

I would love to work for google, they have the same passion for games as I do.

rainslacker2012d ago

Some are overpriced for any platform they're currently on. Most of the games are older, and can be found cheaper brand new from many retailers.

It's the same scenario that came about with rottr. Games releasing a year later on other platforms are still full price. Rottr offered all the dlc, but not all games go through so much effort.

Personally, I wouldnt pay full price, or even half price for any game that isnt a physical copy. But for those that do, they're less likely to buy it full price on stadia

demonic362012d ago

I think the prices are the same as what's out on psn and xbox live currently. I mean, I wouldn't personally pay £59.99 for RDR2, but I can understand those who would like to.

Like you said it's a new platform so some companies might choose to up the prices a little.

Rachel_Alucard2012d ago

One look at your comment history is hilarious. Almost every comment is on Stadia articles. Even saying you are trying to remain unbiased in one, only to follow up with lame comments like "People just love to hate Stadia."

demonic362012d ago

I comment on Stadia only currently as there is so much wrong information and bias going around. If some of you would only check out reddit and other forums you will see that Stadia isn't the anti christ like it's been tarnished with so far!

Rachel_Alucard2012d ago

That bias is all on Google's history and tactics, that is not the fault of the people. What kind of misinformation are you referring to? Your comments come off as overly defensive over the general attitude over the product and you are trying your hardest to shut down anyone who calls it out.

demonic362012d ago

Why would we repay 60.00 for games we bought and played already??
also reports on YouTube people are complaining controller over heating or not working. some applied heatsink to Google Chromecast keep it cool, input lag is horrendous, Google cloud is unstable.
can not turn it on until Google send you activation code email that might take days if you Lucky.

Who would buy this 130.00 crap?? plus 10.00 a month fee
most people own Roku stick or Amazon Fire Stick
now you need to buy Chromecast sphere if you don't have one to work.
is Stadia really worth it???? I say no.

Stadia is Absolutely Bonkers alright

demonic362012d ago

Mostly the prices are decided by the developer and not google.

Retroman2012d ago

nirwanda2013d ago

I was genuinely interested in stadia but was hoping for a Netflix style streaming service with all the games for free and next to no cost for the system etc, but this pricing system kills it for me.
I will wait for a ps5 and stick with cheap games and ps plus

Ausbo2013d ago

You may be interested in xcloud. Or maybe amazons upcoming service

nirwanda2013d ago

The idea of this looked great but it's been so badly done it reminds me of a very bad version of Amazon prime video compared to Netflix without any choice at all.
It's far worse than say playstation plus or Xbox live, and compared to game pass which was more akin to what I was hoping for it's terrible.
Will hold off getting a streaming service till it proves better value than buying a console.

D__RAiL2012d ago

Xcloud is awful compared to Stadias quality

MajorLazer2013d ago

Is there a trial version of Stadia? I'd like to give it a whirl without overpaying for old games

MasterCornholio2013d ago

There really isn't a trial version but you can get the basic Stadia package (1080P) and then buy a game at a price point that's ok with you.

To my knowledge there are not any demos for the service but there should be in my opinion.

rainslacker2012d ago (Edited 2012d ago )

I think there are a couple free games in there right now. You can use the free version of the service to try out the free games. Cant remember what they are, but maybe destiny 2 was one of them

Might be a good way to see who well it works for you if you're interested in subscribing. Services like this are highly dependent on the users connection, so a little prudence before buying anything is not a bad idea.

AirRevenant2012d ago

They did a free one for assassin's Creed Odyssey before the stadia announcement ever struck, it lasted for months, the quality of the stream was surprisingly fantastic.

PS4Gamer19842013d ago

So in other words you are looking for a charity for you to be able to play free games and get a free ride. Let me ask you something.. How is what you want even a sustainable business model? How does Google or game developers even make money like that?

The monthly membership fee would have to be like $30 per month at minimum for devs and google to even make any money

MasterCornholio2013d ago (Edited 2013d ago )

I guess they could do something like GamePass but have it available for streaming only.

But Google Stadia isn't that what they are aiming for is a Steam like store but with streaming being the way the games are delivered.

With that said im pretty sure there will be a Netflix style service for games in the future. Just not with Stadia because that's not their objective. The closest thing to that right now is PSNow which people are free to try out to see if they like it.

@Riptsa

I suggested that the games should have demos so people can see if it works well on their connection. However with all the problems the service is having it's pretty obvious why they are not doing that.

Ripsta7th2013d ago

a free TRIAL you airhead , you know like what most other services offer
ex.Netflix,hulu,gamepass,Ps now, disney plus
nooneis asking for charity ,this would more like a demo, to see if your internet is even capable of running it or to test out imput lag

Oblivion Remake
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Doom: The Dark Ages
Metaphor: ReFantazio

All of those in just 40 days!

I´m not gonna even mention the upcoming day one games for the rest of the year, because its not even fun anymore.

Gamepass is simply the best thing that happened to gamers!

Even more now with games costing $80+ while economy is in the toilet.

neutralgamer19923d ago

I know some people disagree with you simply because of your username and what you have said in the past but here you are absolutely right there is zero doubt that game pass is the best service available especially with the game prices going up

Microsoft owns the most Studios they own the most IP's so they are the biggest publisher in gaming

lukasmain2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

So why aren't GamePass subs growing at any rate worth mentioning? Why do they need Playstation to keep their whole gaming division afloat?

edit: Yes, GamePass is a great deal, a really great deal. That is for sure.

thesoftware7302d ago

Neutralgamer.

Well said, MS got their ass whooped into a working strategy lol. MS will continue to make consoles for the foreseeable future, but they are now capitalizing on what has always been their forte, Software, and platform integrations.

It's kind of similar to Nintendo in that regard, the Wii U did poorly, and made Nintendo rethink the whole console stance, and lean all the way into where the dominated, Handhelds, they consolidated their console and handheld departments and are now stronger than ever.

neutralgamer19922d ago

I never said GP was growing. It's a good service for those who have signed up

lukasmain2d ago

But that's the thing right. If something is so great, then why isn't everyone jumping on board? The vast majority of gamers do not want to subscribe, and it looks like they'll never subscribe for any meaningful length of time. It's just not going to happen. That's clear now I think. Still the best deal in gaming, for those who like it though. Can't deny that.

2/4 are above average games. 1 being way above average. The rest are $20 dollar throwaways and that's if you feel you have to play them. No subservice is worth the rental price.

BeHunted3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

OpenCritic and Metacritic

Oblivion Remake - 82
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - 92
Doom: The Dark Ages - 85
Metaphor: ReFantazio - 93

What game did you say that's average?

anast3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Scores are given for marketing purposes. There are only 2 games on that list that are actually above average.

Why do people ask questions when they actually are making statements?

neutralgamer19923d ago

Anas

First of all you are objectively wrong according to gamer reviews and media reviews. And 2nd of the all GP is an amazing service if you have the time to play and try different games. It would have been a great service when we were in school. It's great for families on a budget since they can pay one price and their kids can play all sorts of games

As far as for hardcore gamers I signed up years ago and my subscription is ending this year, I will not renew because for me personally it's not worth it since I don't play as many games and I like to buy the games I play. For some weird reason even when I rented from blockbuster (yes I am that old 😁) or gamefly in the back of my mind was always I need to finish it and try something else

We can't deny that MS has the most Studios and IP's under their belt and they have the resources to use them too. Whether that's sequels or remasters like we just got. I think fact is Xbox fans over hype the GP and Playstation fans downplay it. Somewhere in tbe middle is the sweet point

anast3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@Neutral

Game reviewers are an arm of the marketing team.

Renting is always bad for the customer.

Doom is an average game. Oblivion is a below average game.

Christopher3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Anast, you're flailing here. I would opt out before going further. All of the games are good games, some are just better. Even Doom TDA is over 4.5/5 on PSN store.

Edit: In fact...

Oblivion Remake - 4.66
Clair Obscur - 4.9
Doom TDA - 4.76
Metaphor - 4.74

That's from Sony gamers.

NotoriousWhiz3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The past few months of xbox game pass have been very good. But how many subpar months were there leading up to this? And how many great games will they have in the future? Game prices are super expensive now but so is xbox game pass and pricing wise, I just don't have the time to play enough games for xbox game pass to be worth it. If they ever release the family and friends package, then maybe.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

You're really reaching here, all of those are good games, I'd happily play any of those for hours, Oblivion might not be that appealing to me, and the new Doom game might be the weaker of the recent DOOM games... But they're still top tier games.

Notellin3d ago

Everything you say is false and misleading.

Lightning773d ago

Never seen anyone who purposely owns themselves with each and every comment you make. Pretty incredible if you ask me.

andy853d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Scores are given because they're good games. Oblivion is 9.3/10 on PS store and very positive on steam. That isnt a below average game in the slightest. Nothing to do with marketing

InUrFoxHole3d ago

Starting from November of last year to now has been incredible if you're on PC GamePass and a COD player. Seems like all the studios are delivering in the same time frame. I'll keep on for the rest of the year and then take a break for a year or so and let the studios catch up.

raWfodog3d ago

Definitely worth it if you’re a day one purchaser of games, and like to zip through them one after the other. I don’t have that much time these days to spend playing games so I will usually wait until they are on sale for 40% or more. I also don’t play through them quickly hence the reason for my huge backlog.

Sonic18813d ago

I agree but none of these games are exclusives. But I agree with games costing over 80 dollars aren't good for Sony and Nintendo fans

Dudububu2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

You do love embarrassing yourself, no? Yeah yeah reviews are for marketing purposes just like for Sony’s blockbusters or that doesn’t count?! Just stop it!

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I think if you take what you play and unless you exclusively play games from the service if you buy what you want from the catalogue you're likely saving money over the course of the year.

After being subbed to gp ultimate for three years I cancelled my service because the value wasn't there I wasn't using it and the only reason i didn't cancel earlier was because i stack it

If you exclusively play games from the service then yeah it'll work out cheaper but my preference will always be buy to own physical if possible

GhostScholar2d ago

The fact that your comment got that many down votes is wild. Say what you want about Microsoft (they waited to long to start making good first party games, the series s was a mess, they abandoned exclusives just when they started making good ones, etc), but to deny the quality of the game pass catalog is just silly and it really highlights the toxicity of fanboyism.

I'll disagree that this service is worth it. I don't play games as quickly as I used to, so I can still buy games when I want to play them and on a sale and come out on top. Steam also allows me to share my game library with my family. That is worth more in my opinion.

So pick your preference at this point, but I'm still making my way through my game library, and the fact that I can play PS5 games on Steam and Microsoft games on steam and share those games is super cool.

GhostScholar2d ago

Game pass users can also share with family…..what are you even talking about ?

gold_drake3d ago

its not xboxs hot streak, its that we've had good games come out lately and ms gave them money to have their hames on the service.

meanwhile, they've been selling like hotcakes on the other platforms.

Petebloodyonion3d ago

And?
Does the notion that the games are available elsewhere diminish the value of Game Pass offering?

gold_drake3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

no absolutely not, but you know i never said that.

but there are reasons as to why they're on gamepass, lets also not forget that
