"Link’s first open world venture is still a masterpiece"

The original LoZ was open world you morons and so were every other one.

GamingBolt is comically hot garbage.

Neonridr1625d ago

open world means you can traverse from one side of the map to the other without any load screens in between. The original NES game was restricted as it had to load chunks of the world in tile sections. the N64/Cube/Wii titles had to load sections of the map.

BOTW loads the game and then that's it.

Veneno1625d ago (Edited 1625d ago )

Botw loads the game the same way the original LOZ does except there's no freeze frame. Instead there's an area of empty land that is a buffer to load the next area of land.

LoZ is totally an open world game. That was the whole idea. Same with Metroid. When you played most games on NES you moved right to left. Zelda and Metroid changed it up. You can go on multiple directions right from the start.

Veneno1625d ago

Woops I meant left to right.

GameBoyColor1625d ago

Loved this game! Can't wait to play part 2 on my Nintendo Switch

Xaevi1625d ago

What I found awesome was the freedom. Never was I restricted to a quest area that if I left I got a game over. Too many open world games do that and always tick me off. Only other game I played with this amount of freedom was Oblivion

Gemmol1624d ago

Freedom bring me back to Zelda series I was done with Zelda after twilight princess I skip everything after

Hoo boy. Nothing gets people fired up quite like breath of the wild on this site. We know we know, its the worst game ever made, nintendo fanboys should be put in gas chambers, etc

Harryvok1625d ago

I think it’s a very technically well made game (apart from Switch hardware holding it back a bit graphically and performance wise).

Great game, but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece.

Sully52461625d ago (Edited 1625d ago )

I personally think its a masterpiece in terms of gameplay and overworld, but not in story.

However, not every game needs to have storytelling on the level of the last of us honestly. I think Botws story could be better tho. Hopefully botw2s is a little more focused on the story, after 1 focused on the gameplay

nowitzki20041624d ago

People here hate it so much you got 8 agrees and 0 disagrees

Sully52461624d ago

This article probably hasnt hit the popular menu yet, thats when the sony fans roll in

King_Noctis1624d ago

Just the sight of BOTW gets some blood boil up around here. Just wait until BOTW 2 is released.

Harryvok1625d ago

Got bored and never finished it, but from what I’d played, I would give it like an 8.5.

Game systems were nice (well apart from how weak weapons were which I personally didn’t like) but nothing ground breaking.

Technically well put together most definitely. Although I just wish the Switch had a bit more power. Those jaggies on a big screen are awful.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

LG_Fox_Brazil126d ago

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64125d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga125d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic124d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits125d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

gold_drake125d ago

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

franwex125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

babadivad125d ago (Edited 125d ago )

It isn't...

Nintendo not thinking about older Zelda games, "difficult to say" if classic style will return

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has again commented on the possibility of revisiting the style of past entries in the series – but there are no plans as of now. Speaking with RTL Nieuws, Aonuma said that games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were possible because of what came before them.

Which is very sad. I still wish we could get a zelda like twilight princess, the dark tone and theme in the traditional style. But times have changed and the masses prefer open world sandbox. Smh. Perhaps we can get a proper hd remake of ocarina of time some day.

CDbiggen264d ago

I played 100 hours of Tears of the Kingdom, enjoyed it, but ready for a game like that next.

kythlyn298d ago

If they can bounce between 2D and 3D Mario games, they can bounce between classic and modern Zelda games too. I thought this was a given when the Switch combined a handheld with a primary console.

Inverno298d ago

Then this is where I part ways. I won't disagree with anyone who says that the old formula was getting stale. And I do think BoTW in a few ways was a step in the right direction, but there's way too much good that was left with the old formula in the transition.

CrimsonWing69298d ago

I want it to. I’m sorry, but these new Zelda games I just can’t get into.

Duke19298d ago

Well that sucks. I still love the classic formula WAY more than the Hyrule Engineering Simulator
