Instead of my usual shot at the Lite, I'll say that the Gameboy Color was a huge improvement over the original (it's in the name), and it also had its own lineup of exclusive games, so no, it wasn't a mid-gen upgrade no matter how you cut it. Nintendo just kept their lineup of Gameboy titles around as they were compatible with the Color and had the same style box and cartridge design. A casual consumer might not be able to tell the difference easily, but if you were to play a Color exclusive title it had a better colour palette and slightly better visuals. But, even comparing the same game on the Color vs the original Gameboy, Color is where it was at.
