Sony Interactive Entertainment trademarks PS6, PS7, PS8, PS9, and PS10 in Japan

Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed trademarks for “PS6,” PS7,” “PS8,” “PS9,” and “PS10” in Japan, likely as security for future PlayStation platforms. This sort of trademark security is a regular occurrence for Sony.

We talked about this kind of stuff in late 90s when PS2 was about to come out, and joked about PS5 being a really strange futuristic device. Turns out it's just a box with hardware, cooling solution and a disc drive. Just like PS1.

Then proceed to write countless unresearched and unverified editorial pieces where they don't even bother to ask for comment from the source itself. I mean... Then gamingbolt can ask a bunch of devs what the PS6-10 will bring. I mean...why only up to 10? Why only in Japan? Why isn't Sony talking about this? What about all the articles about how this proves Sony already lost? Doesn't this definitively prove that Sony is merely reacting to something MS is doing?

I think they did PS2-4 after the success of the PS1. I remember reading something about it long ago in a print magazine. Maybe I'm off on the numbers though.

I don't know if anyone could just trademark these terms without a product or tangible thing to go along with it. Sony obviously has it, but it's not like domain names which a lot of people were buying up to resell to companies during the early years of the dot com bubble.

Thanks for answering, that's why I asked because I don't know if something like that is doable. Like you said it's different to website domain names, but to me it did seem a bit reactionary.

I guess I should research how different trademarks are to patents. To see if a trademark can be claimed without a product, I'm sure with a patent you have to have something to show.

Damn now I have another question, are Sony able to claim trademarks for products not yet developed, or is it that they are afforded the trademark on the likelyhood of delivering a product.

- PS6 will launch around 2027
- PS7 will launch around 2034
- PS8 will launch around 2041
- PS9 will launch around 2048
- PS10 will launch around 2055

Who knows when and if any one of us will be around to see these consoles release or whatever form they are. I’m thinking by ps7 or maybe ps8 maybe by that time the consoles will be getting future proofed. I feel like upgrading your console like a pc is going to come sooner than ps9-10 arrive. And I’m also hoping that I see the day where I have an 8x8 room that will be like a Star Trek holadeck!!! I can remember first seeing gameplay for Metal Gear Solid 2 on the PS2, jaw almost to the floor, and thinking, "graphics can't get any better!" If I'd seen The Last of Us 2 I think my mind would have exploded. Because, I mean, that game looks amazing. Graphics can't get any better!
