Looks like a V for the Roman numeral 5. Nit much different than how the first couple xboxes had some sort of x design o n then.

Thing the grates are for airflow out the front instead if the back, which works good when putting it in an entertainment center

It's a dev kit though. They're much bigger than the final product, and usually dont even have that much thought out into their styling

The PS3 image is a TEST kit, which is different than a dev kit. Test kits are utilized by QA during the development cycle, and they are exact matches to the retail SKUs just with a bunch of extra debugging options.

I worked in QA for 3 years, near the end of the PS3's cycle. The dev kits did not look like the retail consoles, only the test kits did. The links you posted are for Debugging Stations/Test Kits, not Dev Kits.

I've yet to hear from anyone with dev experience explain why this form is beneficial in any way. Typically you get a no-frills tower with the appropriate hookups and switches.

That's the input I'd like to hear. I'm at a loss as to why this form was patented. Is there some proprietary feature to this that we're not seeing?

The design helps with airflow to keep the system cool. Not sure if they've updated them, but the initial dev kits ran hot due to the early production if the chips not being as efficient as the final form factor. Apparently the hot air is blown out from the front, and pulled in from the sides. I imagine a regular box would work, but it has some sort of ducting system for the heat.

Its unknown if this same design will be adapted for the home market, but many of the inputs seen on the dev kit are things used for dev purposes.

@Atom666: Tons of heat release region on top on multiple sides without being fully open vented to prevent dust setting. Also, taller spaces to help with air flow and cleaning in general. It also mimics the console design more appropriately whereas tower designs don't represent the standard airflow/heat management of a console device.

This is important because these dev kits, especially the early ones, get pushed pretty hard in testing and can generate a ton of heat. Those tests help to create standards for memory management and processing early on as well as help engine developers to create tools for specifically using their features without causing issues.

It won't look like this, but I think they're on to something with the front intake. Most people erroneously block the side and back vents, genius to have it blowing outward.

Most systems exhaust out the back, and intake from the front or/and sides. I know the ps2-4 all vent out the back, and have front intakes, and the ps3-4 had side intakes. The reason to pull in from the front is because the cooler air of the house will be towards the front of the house, while the area behind and to the sides will be warmer. Especially true in entertainment centers. However, if the entertainment center has a door, the air will get hot anyways.

Look, we all know that dev kits are not indicative of the finished product, just look at the PS4 dev kit. My question is why isn't this like every other dev kit before which is just a box with connectors and flashing lights? Why is this shaped like that, if not for some reason? I just don't understand the purpose unless that shape is going to somehow come into play for the finished product.

Hell maybe you can put your controller in the middle and charge it or something. Right now it's a real head scratcher.

Honestly, doesn't it worry anyone that a dev kit is out already? That means the system is basically finished. By the end of next year there could be much better processors, graphic chips, power management, etc. which means sony was working on building this last year, so that is even older hardware being used, by the time the actual consumer version comes out it will have three year old parts in it.

No. Dev kits were probably available to devs years ago. And it most certainly doesn't mean the system is finished. The PS4 was only slated to have 4GB of RAM when they had that announcement presentation in February 2013. Changes can be made if they feel it necessary.

Consoles never have the most up-to-date hardware inside. Nothing about what has been described indicates that the PS5 (or even the Scarlett) are going to be under-powered.
