Is xCloud – the Xbox game streaming service – a glimpse at the future of the desktop?

The advancements Microsoft will have to make to enable their xCloud gaming effort will benefit the virtual desktop effort as well. Here’s why that’s a good thing.

I want a handheld video game system that plays smaller versions of games I like. That’s the future.

Spurg1681d ago

If they make a controller peripheral for the Surface Neo and Duo then it becomes a 3DS/Switch whic will stream games.
With the Surface Neo and Duo coming in 2020, im guessing that they are going to make that device the forefront of the of Xcloud.

It should be obvious why giving that much control over to one corporation is a bad idea.

People think China has a restrictive system for the internet and computing in general. Imagine giving that much control and more to one corporation. The only good outcome of Microsoft forcing the desktop onto the cloud is that Linux might actually become the standard.

And imagine having to pay a monthly fee to Microsoft just to be able to use your computer, that's what your looking at here. This is the nightmare scenario for freedom of speech and freedom of the internet. Having to literally use a log in to use your computer that is directly tied to some kind of bank account.

gangsta_red1681d ago (Edited 1681d ago )

I've been playing games digitally for decades now. Exactly what dystopian future do you think will happen when you stream games?

"Imagine giving that much control and more to one corporation."

But there's multiple corporations doing this.

"And imagine having to pay a monthly fee to Microsoft just to be able to use your computer, that's what your looking at here"

You're already paying MS, Nintendo and Sony a monthly price to use multiplayer on their consoles.

"This is the nightmare scenario for freedom of speech and freedom of the internet"

Wait, what? Lmao, what just happened??

"Having to literally use a log in to use your computer that is directly tied to some kind of bank account."

Like, what we do now right?

He's not understanding the way Microsoft wants it. They turned Windows into a service. Having your Windows in the cloud means they are going to get paid for you using "your personal computer," storing everything you do, deciding what you can use and what you can see and what they can take away from you at any time. And with gaming, it would be the same: No ownership. Always connected.

Unless someone has stock in the company, why would a consumer want to own something that's reliant on an internet connection to use?

gangsta_red1681d ago

I did read the article and it still has nothing to do with the points the OP brings up.

Free speech, logging into a device with your bank account information already stored, paying a fee for services?

These are all things that we are already doing, used to and will continue to do without question.

@kelly
"if Microsoft figured out a way to add a fee to play multiplayer games on PC"

Yes, more "what if's" and assumptions to add to the ever growing list of finding anything and everything to complain about MS.

@apocalypse

"No ownership. Always connected."

Yes, like every mobile device or PC you store information on the cloud with. Like most companies use and people on the go already using the cloud as a service. exactly what will happen that seems to have you all worried? Especially when everything you say can also happen today?

I keep reading these doomsday scenarios of when Skynet takes over and yet, it hasn't happened yet.

Also, it's funny to gloss over his free speech paranoid line.

To be fair, cloud OS utilization will be very limited. No government workplace will allow it unless it's a completely closed off system under their control and no private business would do it because they don't want any other company to have access to their data, let alone at such a level.

Microsoft is offering something that really won't take off because the business sector won't utilize it due to data concerns.

rainslacker1680d ago (Edited 1680d ago )

MS wants to deliver their OS as a cloud based service, with any and all programs you can use on it "certified" to run on the OS, through the cloud. This isn't a hidden agenda, they spelled it out completely this was where they wanted to take things years ago. It wasn't obfuscated with fancy PR speak to make it sound like it was something different, but rather said that they want to deliver their OS on the cloud. It's no secret, and giving MS that much control would be a bad idea. Maybe not the Orwellian future stated above, but MS doesn't have a good history of not trying to control everything they touch, nor would they likely try to limit free speech, but the general principal of one corporation having that much control is kind of scary in general.

Chances are, they'll keep the regular windows around for a very long time, but MS doesn't care about making hardware, just that you are using their services and products in a way that allows them to decide when and where you want to use it.

MS may be making a lot of good consumer oriented moves in the console space....subjectively speaking even I can admit they do have some good things going....but don't think that what you love about MS and Xbox is in any way the way they handle the business at large. Because it isn't, and it's painfully obvious that many that praise Xbox or MS are completely oblivious to their general methods of operation.

@Chris

Most governments have already moved over to some Unix/Linux variant.

Businesses and regular consumers are the target for the cloud OS stuff. Businesses are already moving to cloud based services for productivity software, and have been for a long time. Adobe was the first to really go all in on such concepts. MS is has had Office and their enterprise software available for use on the cloud for over a decade now.

MS biggest obstacle is going to be getting clients that can run the cloud OS, because you need an OS to run the software to access the cloud service to begin with. Embedded hardware isn't going to catch on in the consumer market, and considering the devices most likely to be used for such things, they aren't going to have the best functionality for a web based OS. Commercial enterprise can use thin clients with embedded software, whose costs can easily recoup the cost of a service based platform which doesn't require exceptional costs for IT.

None of it will completely remove the normal OS market that we're used to, and MS will still make that avaialable for a long time to come. But they've been pretty transparent about cloud based services being their future....OS included.

Microsoft is experimenting with ad views for access to hundreds of Xbox games

Free games? In THIS economy? Well, in exchange for your eyeballs at least. (Figuratively, not literally... although don't give them ideas.)

What you need to know

• Microsoft Gaming CFO Tim Stuart recently described how in the future, you may be able to view ads to gain access to Xbox Game Pass.

•Recent Xbox Series X|S code strings we've seen seem to corroborate this, with the ability to earn 15 minute blocks of Xbox Game Pass access in exchange for watching ads.

•Game Pass across PC, Xbox, and Cloud features hundreds of games in exchange for a low monthly fee.

Hmm..... I used to earn GP by way of searching with Bing but I hear the rewards program is being revamped. I still earn points but it seems they did change the amount you get per search. I dont know how i feel about this. It sounds like they are going the Youtube route where right in the middle of something you are enjoying, an ad pops up and you have to sit through it (if it does not have a skip option after 5 seconds).

I pay for my GP access, so this wouldnt really bother me but I can see it affecting plenty of others. It reminds me of the rumor about how some game companies (EA, Ubisoft) were toying with the idea of running ads before you ever get into the game. Like the old days of renting movies from Blockbuster and not being able to skip the previews (yes, some DVD had a non skip option for previews). I pay for stuff so i wouldnt have to deal with ads, but even now they are encroaching the very things i pay a premium for.

This whole thing is just..... a bad idea.

purple101159d ago

I remember those dvds with non-skippable adds! Wow that takes me back.

Plague-Doctor27158d ago

@babadivad

Yup. You'd have to pop in the DVD before going to the bathroom, grabbing a snack, etc

shinoff2183159d ago

Such a shame cause even if you don't think this is a big deal what's next they put ads on ultimate gamepass and the free one gets more. This is disgusting. Yes even if Sony goes this route I'll feel the same. We got enough ads in this world ffs

purple101159d ago

Some recent studies show the average person sees 4000 adverts a day

ChasterMies158d ago

The average person should start using ad blockers.

ChasterMies158d ago (Edited 158d ago )

“even if Sony goes this route I'll feel the same”

This isn’t a “both sides” issue. Sony has never had ads on the PlayStation Home Screen but Microsoft has laden Xbox’s Home Screen with ads since the Xbox 360. Microsoft has put ads on Windows 11 OS! Microsoft is basically the bad guy from “Ready Player One”.

shinoff2183158d ago

I know that hence the key word If. Sonys never given an indication of this where as ms definitely has.

Christopher158d ago

I mean, it's not never, but it's not like Xbox. Sony has promoted things with icons on the XMB, it's just really rare.

EvertonFC158d ago

They could do GP free with ads, GP £20 per month without ads, which one would the casual/hardcore choose ?

Christopher158d ago

"Hi, we've received your comment submission. Please watch this 30s ad to finalize and publish your comment to N4G.com. Thank you."

We're just having our eyelids forced open more and more every day it feels like.

You don't say?/S

You mean the company that puts ads on the dashboard, tried to force a camera on Xbox One to push ads is experimenting with ads for game pass access? No. You must be joshing. Lol

Wouldn't put it past them.

crazyCoconuts158d ago

Getting people locked into subs and advertising to them is what passes as innovation at Microsoft.
At least they're keeping Sony on their toes with the threat of competition

Microsoft Launches New Bing Feature Making Xbox Cloud Gaming Supported Titles Playable via Search

Microsoft has launched a new Bing feature that lets you experience Xbox Cloud Gaming supported games just by searching for it.

Profchaos585d ago

Microsoft still trying to get us to start using bing and I'm still not buying it

darthv72585d ago

It's not a bad way to earn points. Esp if you do a lot of searching for stuff. I haven't had to pay for Gamepass in over a year because i am constantly earning enough points to pay for it. I've had upwards of 161k lifetime points and currently only 2k away from another free month of GPU.

Profchaos585d ago

Do you do a lot of searching because bing can't find anything on the first go? /S

I can pretty much do the same thing with my steamdeck. I get that MS doesn't need to make their own dedicated portable... not anymore. this unit for $300 looks to be pretty decent for other stuff as well, not just xcloud gaming.

crazyCoconuts604d ago

Fact that you could get a steam deck for $100 more and play a wide variety of games without an awesome network connection... Dunno, this device could be ok for around the house I guess, but for a lot cheaper imo. Like $150

XiNatsuDragnel605d ago

I see very interesting but xbox portable would probably be better imo

Sgt_Slaughter604d ago

The portable market is dead unfortunately. Phones pretty much ended that as we know it. Going from 150M+ units sold for the DS to only 75M or so for the 3DS is why Nintendo combined markets, Phones chewed right into it.

crazyCoconuts604d ago

I agree with you for the most part, but the switch has been really successful and I think I read somewhere that hardly anyone plays it docked, so it's not being used as a hybrid but I could be wrong.
You're right in that the market is WAY smaller than it used to be

crazyCoconuts604d ago

It would be even better for MS to make GamePass/MS store work on the steam deck. That way you're not locked into just their marketplace. But for an Xbox fan (I don't mean this in a bad way) I can see how a windows based portable that just plays PC game pass/MS store games would be a neat thing indeed

darthv72604d ago

to your comment above, I dont play my oled switch docked. to me its a waste of that screen. If i want to play docked i will use my sons regular switch model.

UltimateOwnage604d ago

Cloud gaming on a handheld, hard pass... Cloud gaming is still pretty terrible even on a dedicated, cable connected device let alone one connecting over wifi. Sounds like someone in charge at Logitech loves the buzz word “cloud” and demanded a handheld be made regardless of whether it was a good idea. I’ll stick with my steam deck.

saint_seya604d ago

Well it works great for me. I guess on cloud gaming depends on your net, servers and how far are you from servers. Dunno where the servers are located here in Argentina, but works great for me, feels like is faster response time than playing regular games online with 50-60 latency.
