Gears 5 Shatters Xbox Records But Pales in Comparison to PlayStation's God of War 4

Gears 5 lands coveted title as the best launch game for an Xbox Game Studio effort shattering previous Microsoft records.

If you look at how the game stacks up to rival PlayStation exclusives - things don't look too peachy.

Well there are over twice as many PS4 consoles in the wild, so naturally you'd be hard pressed for any Xbox exclusive to match up against Sony's best exclusives.

Srhalo1681d ago

There is no match, not until Microsoft wants to talk about sales again. You can't compare what is essentially a free to play game with a game that is being sold at retail.

darthv721681d ago

I'm glad I have played both games, they are excellent. Steelbook editions for both.

RangerWalk2671680d ago

The keyword that you had in your comment is the word game. That's what we are doing here. Playing video games. Why does it matter what other people choose to enjoy? They're just games. Everyone just be happy that we have a hobby that is so incredible.

PhoenixUp1681d ago

Wii U sold far less than Xbox One and some of its exclusives have sold better than Xbox One’s exclusives. That’s not a viable excuse when Halo 5 fails to outsell Mario Kart 8

BizarroUltraman1681d ago

except Halo 5 was bad so I dont know where you think it could have outsold Mario Kart 8.

Neonridr1681d ago

true, but Nintendo is always about 1st party stuff. Zelda which was a launch title had sold more in the first year than most PS4 exclusives and that had a 3.5 year head start.

Srhalo1681d ago

@Neonridr

Wait so your argument is "Nintendo doesn't count because they make good games?"

DaDrunkenJester1681d ago

Nintendo and Mario have such a wider audience than Halo though. Everyone from 3-30 loves Mario Kart so its naturally going to sell more. People buy Nintendo systems for those Mario games so the attach rate is always higher.

gamer91681d ago

The Wii U / Switch has always been about exclusives. You don’t buy a Nintendo to play dozens of multiplats, you buy it for those 2-3 amazing games per year. Of course the attach rate is very high with hit Nintendo games, as it should be. It's the #1 reason to own the console.

milohighclub1681d ago (Edited 1681d ago )

@bizarro mario kart 8 deluxe sold about 1 million more copies than gears 5 has (first week) and had half the total players within 1 month of the switch going on sale. Bear in mind xbox had a 5 year head start here...

mandingo1680d ago

Its Nintendo dude. Parents buy mario cart for theirs kids whether they like it or not.

DaveZero1680d ago

Same goes for WII U exclusives outselling Sony's exclusives, you fanboys love throwing it the ms name lol

Neonridr1681d ago

well MS's 1st party stuff wasn't always available on PC though, correct?

Teflon021681d ago

Gears 5 is completely available and on multiple stores. MS store the moment you open it on windows 10. It's on Steam etc. No excuses really

Nyxus1681d ago

Actually we don't know how many Xbox One systems have been sold, since Microsoft stopped reporting sales figures years ago.

uptownsoul1681d ago

All Xbox exclusives are on PC…That easily makes up any console gap. Now tell us again how hard pressed it is.

Neonridr1681d ago

lol, so now we count PC's as the MS install base? Man, make up your mind N4G.

LiViNgLeGaCY1681d ago

Neonridr, the game is also on PC, so naturally you'd count that install base, it's always been that way. Are you just dumb?

Christopher1681d ago

@Neonridr: you're the one who brought up market reach as a metric. Why are you blaming others for reminding you of the consumer reach for the game compared to PS4 games? No one said anything about hardware counting, this is about software market reach the same as how any other game released on multiple platforms has greater market reach.

uptownsoul1681d ago

@Neonridr - "lol, so now we count PC's as the MS install base? Man, make up your mind N4G."

Wow…You must be new to the gaming community.

The game costs $1... and then you leave out PC

Neonridr1681d ago

does that count as a sale though?

LiViNgLeGaCY1681d ago

Of course he does, anything to downplay PS4. He has some of the least credibility on this site.

And there are like 100 times as many PC's.

"so now we count PC's as the MS install base"

Yep. According to every MS fan boy on this site....a game played on PC is a win for MS, because Windows is a MS platform. We've heard this relentlessly since MS started releasing it's games on PC. Cant play the lower install base card anymore, because Windows is a MS platform....right? Can't have it both ways, although I know people will keep trying.

Then of course, we could make the case for how some Nintendo games sell better, yet had a lower install base for Switch, or I guess now Switch is close to the same install base in less time.

Point is. Install base is important, but people play the games, not the system.

"does that count as a sale though?"

I'd say since the article is based on MS report of the success of Gears 5, which wasn't about sales but number of players, that the game pass relation is extremely relevant. MS had 3 million players over the first weekend. God of War sold 10 million over how many months?(can't remember the numbers). To put it in perspective, for the number of players MS had the first weekend of Gears 5, Gears 3 SOLD 3 million copies in it's first week. Different time frames, but how may copies of Gears 5 would have sold if not for game pass? That's a fairly important number to determine success when we're talking sales, which you seem to be trying to do. Without game pass, it would stand to reason, that with it being on more platforms now, it should have sold more. It didn't manage to sell more, nor was it even really played more in it's first weekend than Gears 3 managed in it's first week.

Point being, Numbers and PR can be twisted to suit a goal. In this case, MS is trying to promote Gears 5 as something popular. Remember when Sea of Thieves was the most successful game on Xbox? It doesn't mean much in the end.

Neonridr1681d ago

I agree, my only point was less potential sales to begin with always puts the Xbox at a disadvantage if you are just comparing sales of games on one platform to the next. That would be like bragging that a 3rd party game sold more on the PS4 over the XB1, I should hope that would always be the case given the staggering difference in units sold. When you factor in Gamepass cannibalizing physical sales, it's no wonder that this game couldn't match up to a previous title. Remember that Gears of War 3 launched on the 360 which had sold quite a few million more units by the time the game launched in comparison to the XB1. Again, naturally it's probably gonna sell less that a 360 title that didn't have something like game pass available.

I'm not simply trying to start anything here, just kind of pointing out the obvious. Apparently that isn't acceptable around these parts as indicative of the answers I have been getting when literally all I was doing was trying to curb the article from the start. I don't even own an XB1 for pete's sake, lol.

rainslacker1681d ago

Maybe, but if you aren't including the PC sales then did the game actually break records? Gears 3 sold really well in it's first week, and all MS put out there was that it had as many players in the first weekend as Gears 3 had purchases in the first week.

1681d ago
sampsonon1681d ago

aren't they including pc sales as well?

Profchaos1681d ago

If you think in those terms is not quite accurate as gears is on PC also.

But also does it really matter

r2oB1681d ago

@ neonridr

Aren't Xbox exclusives also available to PC gamers? That should make up for the disparity between PS4 and Xbox One consoles in the wild, in regards to availability.

Prince-Ali1681d ago

You DO realise that Gears is on PC Steam and Windows Store with a combined of over 100 Milllion Users between them AND on Xbox one with about 40 million consoles sold with NO high budget quality flagship game to come out in years!! and it's stilll performed like this..?

Rimeskeem1681d ago

Hasnt stopped Nintendo from selling 10s of millions of exclusives.

spwittbold1681d ago

Not sure why anything gets compared to God of War (PS4) game is meh. Had to force myself through it after the the forced running/back and forth nonsense.

InUrFoxHole1680d ago

It's not for everyone. I found it enjoyable. I like gears more but they both are worth the $ to me

Specter2291681d ago

Except it's also available on PC ... so combine PC numbers with Xbox numbers and if it's still behind it's not because PS4 sold more consoles.

Compared to Sony's exclusive rn, it's like a pebble on earth!!!

kayoss1681d ago

a random star in the universe. There fixed it for you.

PhoenixUp1681d ago

Microsoft really is the polar opposite of themselves from last gen. During Xbox 360 era they were so boastful of the software sales of their flagship games.

Now they’ll never dare let anyone know how much any of their games have sold.

Godmars2901681d ago (Edited 1681d ago )

Maybe that should speak of how big of a "success" they were in the good old days of the 360. How it launched over a year before the PS3, had a shrinking sales gap, and MS stopped reporting sales altogether closing out the gen with their system technically on top while the actual close came with the PS3 selling more.

mandingo1680d ago

ya cuz an idiot name Mattrick boned xbox from the start

Nu1681d ago

Dr Disrespect started off hating the game but eventually learned to like it

Rude-ro1681d ago

Was it a sponsored stream?
I can guarantee you it will last a week that he plays the game:
Hard to tell anymore since these streamers are being used as marketing material ie the name influencers.
Also why Microsoft is testing the waters by buying these streamers like ninja.

LordJamar1681d ago

Nope seems he was jus trying the game cause he seen all the great reviews plus his close friends love it and convinced him to play it and now he really likes it

isa_scout1681d ago

Lol That would be a terrible sales pitch....."Want this game for a dollar? You'll hate it but eventually you'll learn to like it"...Be like, no bro I'm good...lol

LordJamar1681d ago

Why you gota be a fanboy hater?

jambola1680d ago

thanks for the update
what ever would we do it we didn't know how a random twitch streamer felt about the game
