Yep. According to every MS fan boy on this site....a game played on PC is a win for MS, because Windows is a MS platform. We've heard this relentlessly since MS started releasing it's games on PC. Cant play the lower install base card anymore, because Windows is a MS platform....right? Can't have it both ways, although I know people will keep trying.

Then of course, we could make the case for how some Nintendo games sell better, yet had a lower install base for Switch, or I guess now Switch is close to the same install base in less time.

Point is. Install base is important, but people play the games, not the system.

I'd say since the article is based on MS report of the success of Gears 5, which wasn't about sales but number of players, that the game pass relation is extremely relevant. MS had 3 million players over the first weekend. God of War sold 10 million over how many months?(can't remember the numbers). To put it in perspective, for the number of players MS had the first weekend of Gears 5, Gears 3 SOLD 3 million copies in it's first week. Different time frames, but how may copies of Gears 5 would have sold if not for game pass? That's a fairly important number to determine success when we're talking sales, which you seem to be trying to do. Without game pass, it would stand to reason, that with it being on more platforms now, it should have sold more. It didn't manage to sell more, nor was it even really played more in it's first weekend than Gears 3 managed in it's first week.

Point being, Numbers and PR can be twisted to suit a goal. In this case, MS is trying to promote Gears 5 as something popular. Remember when Sea of Thieves was the most successful game on Xbox? It doesn't mean much in the end.

I agree, my only point was less potential sales to begin with always puts the Xbox at a disadvantage if you are just comparing sales of games on one platform to the next. That would be like bragging that a 3rd party game sold more on the PS4 over the XB1, I should hope that would always be the case given the staggering difference in units sold. When you factor in Gamepass cannibalizing physical sales, it's no wonder that this game couldn't match up to a previous title. Remember that Gears of War 3 launched on the 360 which had sold quite a few million more units by the time the game launched in comparison to the XB1. Again, naturally it's probably gonna sell less that a 360 title that didn't have something like game pass available.

I'm not simply trying to start anything here, just kind of pointing out the obvious. Apparently that isn't acceptable around these parts as indicative of the answers I have been getting when literally all I was doing was trying to curb the article from the start. I don't even own an XB1 for pete's sake, lol.

Movie Pass is having tons of issues.
Netflix had had to raise prices multiple times while dealing now with tons more competition.

Not really. What they're doing now with Game Pass is trying to set themselves up for the future. What may seem like a failure now could bring in huge revenues in the future.

I don't know if they're taking a loss on the game, but even if they are, it's better to think of it as marketing budget, than them trying to make direct profits on the game. For MS, they've already written off the production of the game. Probably did that in the year it was put into production. That's how all corporations do their expenses for the most part. Now, they can show revenues as a whole to their investors, and don't have to break down individual titles to anyone except in cases of big investors wanting more detailed information. They'll have the numbers internally, but if they feel that whatever they're doing is going to help them achieve their end goal, they'll keep doing it.

It's the disconnect between what we would consider successful, and what metrics a company uses to determine success. Just like some would say that PSVR wasn't successful because it only sold to a fraction of the isntall base. Yet it greatly exceeded Sony's own expectations, hence, it was a success to them.

Comparing a still recovering Xbox to a PlayStation at the height of its popularity is silly. We all know this gen was lost from Xbox One announcement on but they have been making positive changes to build momentum. Maybe they will never win but to me they don’t have to they just have to do well. Honestly them not winning is the best thing that ever happened to anyone with a Xbox. I’ve been trying to work bloodstained into my budget for like two months now it’s on game pass along with Metro Exodus, DMC5, Gears 5 and very soon The Outer Worlds. In terms of value this is hard to beat so I’m happy with where Xbox is and where it at least seems to be going. I guess we will see.

I think this desire a lot in the community, and the notion perpetuated by the press that only one game can reign supreme is really stupid. I don't know what metrics MS put on GeOW for success, but I can speculate as well as the next person. But, if they truly believe it's successful for them, then that's what matters to them.

On the players end, they can play it if they want, or ignore it, and if they want to discusss sales numbers, they should be able to without pitting two successful titles against one another. People did the same thing over BOTW and Horizon on release, along with quality of game discussions. In this case, Gears 5 is being compared to all of Sony's successes this gen.

While I do have a personal opinion on which games I find better, I won't discount the quality of Gears 5, nor say that it wasn't successful or a bad game just because another game is seemingly, if not easily quantifiable, as more successful.

Seems a lot of the 'gamers' spend more effort in hating on a rival companies box rather then looking at the games themselves and taking a step back. As you said, not every game has to be your kind of game but that doesn't make it 'shit' or 'a failure'. My guess based on some of the arguments that happen here is that a large base of users are young members unable to afford much or limited in what they can experience perhaps which seems to lead to Choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalization in mine = good, yours = bad.

I'm lucky enough to have a job and budget for 2080Ti PC, Xbox one X and PS4 Pro, because I love the games first and foremost over any loyalty to a company. Sony knocked it out of the park this gen for sure, but that doesn't make me any less excited for Halo Infinite.

Haters are going to hate. No matter what Gears 5 is a fantastic game. The campaign is great! It is also graphically in the top 5 best this gen! My X1 was worth the upgrade. Gears and Astrial Chain are my favorite games right now. Astrial is on the Switch and Switch proves power doesn't mean better games.

Gears 5 has been a great success thus far and Microsoft is developing its blueprint for the future. Sales, XGP and in the future, streaming with xCloud. The important element is that games are of quality that people want to invest in these options. Obviously Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4 fits that criteria, which is why they are showing the success they have thus far. It will be in Microsoft's best interest to continue that trend with future Xbox Game Studio titles.

Those that are bringing up how good XGP is for the devs (in this case The Coalition) is laughable. They are a first party studio...completely being taken care of by Microsoft. All of their salaries are being paid on time and when the studio needs resources, they get said resources because they are in house. They want for nothing. In fact, they are all smiles because their game just became the biggest launch release title of any in house game, this entire generation and current is benefitting from a pretty healthy community across console and PC...why would this not be good for any studio I have no idea haha.

God of War felt like a breath of fresh air. And Gears 5 (while impressive) is still more of the same. It's only a slightly small upgrade from Gears 4.

There are many many ways to spin this. Since the Xbox One likely has a little less than half the install base of the PS4, it is a huge achievement. As far as it happens via the game pass (mostly), that was what Microsoft wanted. They used one of their biggest IPs to push the service and likely they will be successful in that goal. Look how music is consumed these days. It so incredibly different than when I was young -I'm 48. It is hard to conclude and understand exactly what's big and what's hot in music today. There are so many ways to consume music. There is still radio (the only place to consume music when I was young...until MTV), streaming services, YouTube, straight from the internet etc. That is where video games are likely heading. The business model when knew for 30 plus years has been slowly changing with the rise of digital, now streaming and services will further muddy the water. The point is Gears 5 is a dynamite game...it is Sony fans. It may or may not surpass the best of PS4's offerings, but it is an excellent game from an excellent series. It's been reviewed very well and apparently it had a huge weekend. I say great for Microsoft and Xbox One fans!

Gamepass is MS's plans and obviously that impacts sales figures. I absolutely would have bought Gears 5... but I have 2 years of Gamepass ultimate. So does literally every friend I play the game with. So it's hard to really get a good grasp. I guess you have to go by players?

God of War has been the fastest selling PS4 exclusive hasn't it? Of course Gears 5 wouldn't match it.

GoW's one of the highest rated games of this generation, and had plenty of hype behind it. Gears 5 didn't rate as well, and it didn't have much hype until a few weeks before release. Plus the PS4 has double the install base.

This really is no surprise.

Gow isnt the fastest selling exclusive of Sony, in 3 days it did 180 plus millions and it already is over the 600 millons mark. Its only on one platform. Its just another league. Only Nintendo can reach. Now if you compare to something that is in two platform and that you can rent for 1,2 or 15$.... They better have 60 or 70 millions users on gamepass combined Xbox and PC, because otherwise....
