Sony recently confirmed that it does indeed own the rights for Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive. Here's why the franchise is set to succeed on PlayStation consoles.
Nope, played it on xbox one, its a infamous knockoff on rails, very repetitive.
it may be repetitive but It was very fun to play. Everything else you said I couldn’t disagree more . Last time I played this it game had nothing that resembled Infamous
Every game is repetitive that argument is the dumbest one you can have in a video game.
Short term fun.
Agreed. I am not seeing much of a connection with infamous & sso outside of superpowered. If anything you can see where spider-man got a lot of inspiration from though when you look at sunset overdrive. That would make much more sense.
I love Sunset Overdrive, great f-ing game! One of my favorite games of this gen.
How is it an inFamous ripoff? What’s next you gonna say Jak & Daxter is a Banjo-Kazooie rip-off?
Donkey Kong is a Mario rip off /s
CoD is a Battlefield rip off /s...
Tekken is a Soul caliber rip off /s
Mario is a Pac Land Rip Off, but it did well.
Spiderman is a Arkham Asylum rip off /s
Exactly. He's most likely coming from a place of fanboyism. SunsetOverdrive and InFamous are both open-world action games, but they're still very different from each other. Both are amazing series in their own right.
I own both consoles so i can make that assessment. I own infamous because they gave them out with plus and i own sunset because of gamepass.
An Infamous ripoff? Mmm. Edge. The games are pretty different, big guy.
Infamous? Yeah, you never played it.
If you thought Sunset was repetitive, how on earth did you not think inFamous was repetitive as well? They're both equally "repetitive" in terms of gameplay variety. It's very obvious you didn't play more than an hour of the game. I don't know if your comment was coming from a place of PS4 fanboyism or something like that. I'm a huge PS4 fan myself, but I'd never degrade a good game that came out on another console. I've beaten Sunset Overdrive, and it's an awesome game. For anyone who's interested, I highly recommend it. Absolutely not repetitive.
Feels a lot like Spider-Man on ps4 to me. PS - most games are pretty repetitive. Even the best ones.
Maybe you didnt play it long enough? It is a game that requires a lot of grinding (figuratively and literally) but the reward in the end is worth the effort. That reward is.... FUN
In mario you jump all the time; in God of war, you just keep fighting. In pokemon you just catch pokemon. COD, you just shoot. Metal Gear, sneak around. Smash bros, fight all the time. These games are loved by many. It seems that maybe video games are not for you. In all these games you also battle trainers, do some platforming, fly a plane, fight and platform your way to places, sneak behind someone and take them out, etc etc. I guess you forgot all the shooting, powers, platforming and all the other cool stuff sunset overdrive has to offer.
[email protected] off. Some of us loved this game
I didn’t play it because no xbox. I’ll try it if it ever comes out on ps plus but please let’s not pretend like this is some ground breaking stuff from insomniac. I
Weird all the xbox guys said it was great, never heard anyone say it was an infamous knockoff on rails I wonder why people would say that now.
Infamous is terrible imo
Insomniac kept the rights to the game because they didn’t want Sony to completely own the IP...and five years later Sony ends up owning it anyway Things came full circle. It’d be ironic if this now PlayStation owned series never does actually arrives on a PlayStation platform
My favourite exclusive on xbox1(it wasn't on PC when I played it). I bought the sunset overdrive xbox1 console just to play it. Great game. Best respawn animations of any game to date and nice character customisation. Pretty sure most Ratchet and Clank fans would like it. Hopefully it gets a sequel on ps4.
they probably own all of insomniacs PC game offerings as well (i believe all of them were VR games)
no, they don't. Oculus funded the VR games. So the rights lie with them. There could be an arrangement with Oculus to bring those VR titles to PSVR down the road, but time will tell on that one.
good to know
I disagree that it is ironic. Insomniac tried to go on its own. They discovered being on their own wasn't good so they came back home. There is nothing ironic about it, it was more a journey of self-discovery.
I don't think it's ironic because I don't think their intent was to keep Sony away from the IP. I think Insomniac just wanted to own their shit because there is a degree of instability when you allow the publisher to own the IP. Unfortunately they ended up getting a worse experience from other publishers like EA. Sunset was good game though but again it was somewhat limited in being an exclusive at the time. Had it been a multiplat I think it would've seen a lot more success.
If it was a playstation exclusive it would have seen alot of success. Don't know about Multiplat, since the Fuse game stuff looked bad on em with multiplat work
@Teflon02 Comparing Sunset to an EA game that had clear mismanagement? Nothing wrong with this comparison at all is there, lol?
We are in n4g, now this game deserves attention. Well I played on the Xbox and with less than one hour it was enough for me. The only thing that is good about Sun Set is that this game gave them the opportunity to do Spiderman and that alone gives value to sun set.
You mean the game will be on PS4, so it will get the attention it deserved
A lot of PS4 fans said the game was trash, now that its potentially going to be on PS4 it's a good game?
Exactly...on X1 it was a mediocre and boring title, now it will magically become a Sony AAA exclusive.....this site is full of hypocrite fanboys....so pathetic. As a gamer I thought parts did get repetitive, but I felt the over the top weapons and jet grind radio aesthetic gave it a unique flavor. I can see the infamous reference as the traversing through the world were very similar, grinding on power lines, train tracks, fences.... I was and am hoping for a sequel....
You guys are so predictable.
I actually never heard ps gamers calling it trash personally lol
I don’t know about any of that personally. Go raid those guys who apparently said that according to you. I bought an Xbox one for Titanfall and sunset and I loved that game. That is all Insomniac’s fanbase is on PS4 so I am sure the game will get a lot of attention from people that couldn’t play it
I was pissed that it was on Xbox. Didn’t have one at the time only ps4. I think every PlayStation fan was upset about that one. So I don’t know what you talking about Willis
it'll go from being a mediocre game to the bees knees according to N4G :P
It was only to be expected to have a lot of Ps fans upset about it because that is Insomniac’s fanbase, but I was not one of them. I supported the game and had a ton of fun with it Those who say the game was mediocre and had no interest in it will not change their opinion now, but many more people who did not play it will be pleased. Say what you want about that few that said such thing, but that was a minority and the Insomniac fanbase is bigger and better than that
MS gamers didn't support it very much when it released on the X1, so not sure why they care if others had a problem with it. If Sony gamer support it, then isn't that good that Sony gamers are willing to give a game a chance more than X1 gamers?
It's not for me.
Nice to have? Yes. Must have? No I am not complaining but MS seriously dropped the ball on this one but then again its nothing new.
Why bring Microsoft into this? All they did was publish it.
Why bring MS into this? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasnt Sunset Overdrive an Xbox exclusive?
Yeah because Insomniac wanted to keep the IP to themselves Other than publishing, what does Microsoft have to do with a franchise they never had any ownership of? Are we going to hold Microsoft accountable for other games they published but don’t own like Ninja Gaiden 2 & Rise of Tomb Raider?
But as Fallen said... they just published it. And it was a fantastic title anyway. I bet if it was a Sony game y'all would he singing a different tune on it.
"And it was a fantastic title anyway." Show me in my post where I say that it wasnt a good game.
Well the tune seems to have changed on the xbox side captain finger pointer, the game apparently is " a infamous knockoff on rails and repetitive" now. Singing different tunes also reminds me of how Hellblade was a "boring walking simulator" according to you xbox kids right up until it eventually came to xbox and then of course it was suddenly fantastic.
Maybe. We Sony fans probably would have supported the game more than the Xbox fans did as well.
Saying that MS dropped the ball on this one makes it sound like you didnt like the game or something.
What??? Thats what you got from that comment? Saying MS dropped the ball means if they acted sooner this IP could have been their's hence that comment. The sad part is MS knew that this game was popular among Xbox gamers and never made an attempt to somehow get a sequel, at least that we know of.
I agree, I do really wish they would have pursued a sequel for it. In that sense, yes, they definitely dropped the ball.
How can MS drop the ball when they never owned the IP? You tried to make it a MS thing but failed, but then again that's nothing new.
We obviously dont know the dealings, but I remember seeing that Insomniac wanted to do a sequel but only needed a publisher. If MS was willing they could have stepped up and funded a sequel. Maybe they offered and Insomniac declined? Who knows, but I think MS should have pursued a sequel.
I think you mean Sony dropped the ball. It was their refusal to allow IG to retain the IP that made them go to MS in the first place. MS only published it, it wasnt their ball to drop it was IG's. Now Sony own IG and with it... the "ball". So if Sony drops it again (by not releasing a sequel or at least a PS4 ver) then are you going to call them out on it or still blame MS?
I cant help they dropped the ball that time with Mass Effect too last gen.
Lets be honest. Out of all the projects that Insomniac could do, a sequel to this game should be DEAD LAST on the cards. Of course the obvious Spiderman 2, Ratchet and Clank 2 and Resistance reboot. Even a NEW IP would be preferrable to Sunset Overdrive sequel.
Resistance should be right along side Spiderman 2. Just replayed R3 last week and damn that game is still amazing. Just like KZ3 it has aged fantastically well.
While I agree that Spider 2 is a priority, the rest can wait. I'd rather get a sequel to a fantastic game then some remakes or reboots.
Actually, the last thing on their list should be a Fuse sequel. A game so lost that you might have forgot about it. I would prefer a Resistance Fall of Man reboot.
Resistance, ran its course. There were three mainline games and two spin offs. Same with R&C. you have the main games and a couple of spin offs as well as a remake (to coincide with the movie at the time). What about another IG game nobody talks about...? Song of the Deep? Maybe they can revisit that one but dont say SSOD should be dead last. They had fun making the game and people had fun playing it. It deserves a sequel, or at very least a remake. Right now spider-man is the most likely project they are working on but hopefully they return to this one soon after.
I'd prefer any of their other games over SSoD. Or a new IP. I liked SSoD alright, but it wouldn't be one that I would be overly excited for. Probably something I'd get around to playing at some point. Not that the game isn't fun, just that the first one was kind of hollow in terms of the quality of most of their games. It had a bit of an Insomniac feel, but lacked that special something that their more popular games have. Lack of story or memorable characters, with kind of uncompelling game play just fell flat compared to their normal standards.
whilst it was microsoft exclusive it was apparantly a great sandbox game now its likely coming to playstations its suprisingly all of a sudden become a turd game...
Not sure that's the game or series Insomniac would choose to focus on moving forward.
Sony isn’t gonna touch this. Sunset overdrive is great, but Spider-Man is better and if they have multiple teams rolling, they’d probably want to make a new ip
