Well its not a bad score on metacritic, its actually very good but not the smash hit MS was hoping for, currently 1 point higher score than Gears 4's 84 on Xbox and 2 points lower on PC.

That's what happens when every outlet gives games a minimum of 8 and above. It makes it impossible to tell how 1 game is relative to another. If Gears 4 was dropping 9's and Gears 5 is far and away superior, logically you'd want to give it a god 2 or 3 points higher on the scale, but now they can't because not only would it be off the scale, but any time a sequel is better than the previous entrt they have to drop 10's suggesting that sequels are perfect games.

Big outlets especially need to start being realistic and grading properly. A 5/10 is seen a absolute trash by most, but going out of 10, a 5 should be "average" with anything above being good, and anything below being bad, scaling relatively depending how far above or below 5 it is.

Both are great, but Gears will give you a full suite of gameplay variety from co-op campaign, and plenty of PvP and PvE modes.

Control is amazing as well, great story, great characters, but it's your typical story focused SP game that you'll be done with in 8 hours.

Both are worth your time though.

Control is a great game. But Gears 5 will have more replayability now. I feel Control beats it in terms of story and perhaps even gameplay but it's pretty short with story DLC coming in the future. If anything get Control later when the DLC is out, maybe it'll have a deep discount by then.

Control's story isn't for everyone. It quite confusing and similar to Quantum break you MUST read everything in sight ot else you won't understand anything.

Telling you man it seems anytime AAA level exclusive comes out 10's are handed out. Back in 90's and mid 2000's only a handful of games had ever gotten 10/10

But now a days 10/10 is common

It's because back then 10's were for special games, and a lot of why this changed is because the focus on a meta score. People have this stigma that if your game isn't rated 8 or higher it's junk.

It seems like it. That and I think some of these scores seem symbolic. 10/10 - i.e. the "perfect" game? The reviewers are attempting to help MS move on from Epic no longer making Gears, and trying to convince everyone everything is copasetic despite how much it's mutated from Epic's incredible lineage with the series. I felt the same with with BotW and it's review scores. I didn't really fall for that game either and felt it was overrated for the same reasons... Change isn't always better. I love me some Gears; it was the main reason I got a 360, but I'm not quite feeling like these scores are well founded. We'll see. XBOne needed something to celebrate, and it's cool that this is at least earning some clamor, even if a bit over inflated.

Smooth, yes - but in any one scene the light bounces off everything the same, skin, metal, plastic all have the same properties. It lacks nuance and detail.

I agree it looks wonderful at 60fps, but if we are talking about visuals, its not mind blowing, and its not on par with GOW, Uncharted4, LOU2. I find it weird that xbox games are visually less impressive, even though we have the scorpio.

Gow, Uncharted and LOU2 are 30fps game, so they can push grafics far more then a 60fps game.

In terms of what?

I've played ever Gears and every God Of War, but Gears 5 comes across as a good game and great return to form, but let's be real, it didn't grab the franchise by the scruff of the neck with all new gameplay, new setting, new lore and raise the bar for visuals for the entire generation like GOW did.

I've no doubt Gears 5 will be a good time for sure and is a welcome spike in quality for Microsofts 1st party output this gen, but let's not get carried away that it's anywhere near as special as the GOW reboot.

Reading the reviews it looks like it's great for fans while maybe bringing in some new people, but anyone who already dislikes Gears won't have their mind changed. I'm fine with it.

The question should be are some of these high scores because its a good game or because there is a female lead. The reason I am asking is because I seen a few reviews out there giving it a high score and top of there list of praises is because it has a female lead. Just wondering.

Well, if you actually read the review, you might figure it out.

"Character development in Gears 5's campaign is perhaps one of its biggest improvements from past titles. Del Walker barely had a discernible personality to speak of in Gears of War 4, but in Gears 5, his character really shines. Since a huge portion of the game is all about Del and Kait Diaz, we get to spend more intimate time with these characters, letting both of them shine and become infinitely more interesting than they were in Gears of War 4.

The only downside to Gears 5's otherwise vastly improved character development is JD Fenix. It seems as though The Coalition has stopped trying to push JD as the replacement for Marcus Fenix, as his role in Gears 5 is significantly reduced when compared to Gears of War 4. There are some interesting things done with JD's character throughout the game, but his arc feels a bit rushed and unearned. We didn't buy certain developments with JD's character, but with the rest of the campaign and its characters delivering in such big ways, it's really a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things."

So, doesn't look like just being a woman was at all a concern let alone mentioned as a bonus.

Really. I mean come on. I played this earlier today and it's very average. It's gears 4 with better lighting. Feels like you're playing a 10yr old game (with the best lighting I've ever seen).
Giving it a 10 shows compete and utter naivety. You're telling me this is tlou quality? Jesus christ.
