RPS writes: "I understand now why Square Enix largely focused on the game’s battle scenes and FMV sequences in that initial Remastered trailer, because holy moly it’s a bit of a shock when you actually clap eyes on the rest of it. Don’t get me wrong. The character models are gorgeous. You only need to look at the transformation between Squall’s original, puffy-cheeked appearance and his new, pretty anime body above to see how much they’ve improved. Those pre-rendered backgrounds behind him, though? Those are a different story."
Final Fantasy has a long running history with numerous numbered titles and spin-offs, but which games stand to benefit from a remake?
I'd rather the 13 trilogy just be ported tbh. No matter what you think if it, it shouldn't be the only numbered offline games not playable on new consoles. But naturally I'd play the **** out of 8-12 remakes.
It's a rare privilege to be able to delve back through gaming history to review one of the greatest games of all time.
It’s a great game, but uh, this is like a really old release. Not sure why you felt the need to put a review up for it now. Are you going to do a review on Parasite Eve?
The redone character models made this a must buy for me as a FFVIII fan. Turning off random encounters was also nice.
Would love if they gave this treatment to to Parasite Eve 1 and 2.
Few people really know how important Final Fantasy VIII is to the series as a whole and why it is so different from the games that the series itself presents to us. That's what Final Fantasy Crystal is going to bring here in this special. A real research into the development of Final Fantasy VIII.
My second favorite Final Fantasy entry next to Final Fantasy X always had fun playing the card game, loved going into space and rescue Rinoa. The way they added game sprites to the FMV was awesome always loved the intro the Guardian Forces had. I think Parasite Eve uses the same engine as Final Fantasy 8 which is another favorite of mine. I love Eyes On Me song. I just imported the PS4 port of Final Fantasy 8 and I also have Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 cartridge for my Switch. I even bought the Final Fantasy 8 Sound track off a buddy near mint condition only used three times.
FFVII and FVIII are my legendary Final Fantasy games of all time, played 9 and 10 , great FF games but not Legendary status as 7 and 8 imo, FFVIII card game so addictive got collect them all for super powerful spells, epic soundtrack , still remember Laguna's epic battle theme, or how about last boss theme with Ultimecia?, I really thought Sephiroth's battle themes couldn't be surpass, but oh man!, still not sure it surpass it but the music in FF VIII is up there with same high quality as VII. If there is a old past FF games I would love to play or have it remade is FF VI just because this amazing intro, something tells me this is an epic adventure as well like 7 and 8.

FF6 through 9 are the best FF games for me, we’ll go ahead and lump FF7 Remake into the mix. Like each one was incredible in their own way. After that it just hasn’t been the same to me.
Final fantasy on the PsOne was always very good. The draw system was interesting, broken but interesting. Final fantasy 9 was also really good. Wish we could return to that Era, just briefly.
So disappointed that there's no physical copy, not sure if I'll get this or not.
Cant be worse than the FF9 remaster. Prerendered backgrounds in that game now looks like bad digitized water coloring.
I’ll say this, there’s always going to be people that will never be happy with anything. For me, I’ve been wanting to play FF8 for a long time and this gives us trophies and updated character models. It’s the same game other than that and some really stupid censorship.
I fired it up following a guide to 100% it and to make an overpowered character and I am absolutely loving everything about the game. Say, what you will about the junctioning system but I find it really fun trying to apply spells to make my character a beast. I spent a good 2 hours building up my card deck and then playing people for rare cards.
This reminded me of how fun Final Fantasy games used to be. Yea it’s easy to say “they could’ve” and “they didn’t”, but I’m grateful Square even did anything at all and the game isn’t expensive. If you’re interested I strongly encourage you to give this version a try.
It's always a shame when a remaster of a genuine classic falls short. Some of the mods I've seen for improving the graphics of FF9 put this effort to shame and those were probably just done by one or two people.
Still a great game but next time I play it I'll probably just stick with the original, it might be lacking a few upgraded character models but it's got more charm.
FF8 was my favourite FF back in the day and I’d been hoping for a full remaster but I’m sorry, leaving the pre-rendered backgrounds as they were is such a lazy and disrespectful move that it borders on false-advertising to call this release a remaster. They’ve only done half the work and it’s a HUGE disappointment. As some have already mentioned, it doesn’t take too much manpower or time to get an AI upscaling algorithm to create beautiful crisp 4K upscales of PS1 pre-rendered backgrounds. It’s POSSIBLE and you would think a company with the funds and resources of S-E would put the care and attention needed into doing this at the very least. I feel I’m not in a minority of FF8 fans who are probably going to pass on this release because of this egregious oversight. I look forward to fans in the modding community eventually creating and adding their own new 3D models to fix the ugliness of the world map and the backgrounds.
