Today at the Chinese gaming expo ChinaJoy, a devoted fan destroyed a PlayStation 4 in protest at what a cluster of onlookers saw as Sony's promotion of shameless The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ''clone'' Genshin Impact.

Okay to be fair after watching some gameplay there is a lot of similarities. The style of the visuals, stamina meter next to the character, the climbing, enemy designs, the menus, and even the soundtrack has a similar feel to Botw in areas. I don't know if its enough for a legal risk, but it's enough to make you lose respect for the developers.

Copying games is okay, but doing so in this way works against you.

When you straight up rip the style without any deviation to the point where it looks like a clone then it's not inspiration. The inspiration excuse doesn't work when you straight up copy the aesthetic design of the guardians and give them the exact same abilities. Does the surge have the same visual style, platforming, menu design, enemy design accompanied with similar combat patterns for said enemies, and music? No? Then your analogy doesn't work.

BOTW was far from the first to do all those things. It may have been the first to do them all in one place. Visuals and music style though...that's a tough call unless it's a complete copy paste...which it obviously isn't.

In any case, what a stupid thing to do. There are plenty of games which rip off other games, and it's not like Sony produced this game. Sony is promoting Chinese developers. To me, that should mean a hell of a lot more than if one of those developers is creating some knock off to BOTW.

Yeah, and? Just seems like the person has really warped priorities, but doesn't have a problem if the rip off is somehow beneficial to them. While this individual is probably not directly involved with said actions, China in general does benefit from such things, hence, his problem isn't the rip off itself, it's that someone would care to challenge Nintendo. That's a completely stupid reason to protest against Sony, and destroy property. If it was his property, he's only hurting himself. If it's someone else's property, then he's committing an illegal act.

It's actually a shame too because the graphics alone would've made me pick this up if I'd just heard about it, but there's so many similarities that it ends up being hard to not see it as a full blown Chinese knock off. Nintendo fans are just butthurt. The mechanics in a game and artstyle are not 100% owned by nintendo only the world ip it formed. They don't go into the differences either where you can choose your gender and customization (which was hard to find online for some reason and pissed me off) and that you select different characters to fight as switching between them. Not to mention their abilities are way different in gameplay. Oh and there's no weapon degredation mechanic. But yes it does get inspiration from botw for a stamina bar and art style but oh no let's throw a hissy fit because only zelda can be put on a pedistal. Also if zelda was such a masterpiece why would you be offended someone is making something similar? Maybe it's the fact it was so easy to copy that makes zelda fans lose their crap. I read reviews of people dissing genshin saying it's not up to the same quality but i saw gameplay and it feels like they captured all the good stuff of zelda and got rid of the crappy weapon breaking and also the played out storyline and it's coming to ps4 so I'll be able to play it which makes me feel like if this is such a shameless ripoff i'll be playing the better version of zelda where the weapons don't break.

My favorite game of all time is Ys I&II on the PC-Engine. It's a clone of the first zelda game, albeit with slightly different game play mechanics. Other differences are that it has an actual story.

Honestly it looks more like RiME with combat than it does BoTW... There are some similarities to BoTW. But this seems much smoother and more vibrant in it's color palette, BoTW has a more muted color pallets, this just looks more saturated. The combat is faster and smoother as well. BoTW combat kind of pauses when link hits an enemy to show impact, while this just flows through uninterupted. The sound and the menu design aren't so similar

Unless the game is using stolen assets, which happens in china all the time, then this is a non issue. Some people are acting like copying style and gameplay aspects is akin to breaking copyright. That is false. This is how genres are made and it is historically how the industry works and evolves.

Games are clones of other games Saints Row is a GTA clone Anthem is a Destiny clone there are even indie games that clone bigger games. Hell Golden Axe Warrior is a Zelda clone as well smashing your own PS4, XB1, Switch or even a pc because you're pissed a game cloned another game shows people that you're an idiot.
