The Nintendo Switch saved me from achievement addiction

"I used to be addicted to achievements and trophy hunting in video games, but Nintendo Switch has none of those things. It helped me break the addiction." | Daniel Thompson, Nintendo Enthusiast

Trophies/achievements are a slight bonus that make gaming a little more enjoyable. It's just nice to look back at your accomplishments and to compare with friends.

Nintendo is way behind with online infrastructure and features. Fans need to hold them accountable instead of spinning their deficiencies into some sort of positive.

It's a bit silly. It's like saying "i used to be addicted to gaming, but thanks to Xbox 360's RRoD i no longer have that problem!". "Thanks for being deficient videogame company!".

I cant wait for the articles about the switch saving people from online addiction or high quality graphics addiction and some other silliness. A lot of the switch fan addicts like to talk about how power doesn't matter but were salivating about the prospect of Nintendo releasing a more powerful switch that can play games in higher resolution and better frame rate.

You don’t need online to have achievements/trophies in video games.

I have to agree with the author though. I find that I spend less time playing games I enjoy without the incentive to get a plat...or whatever. Probably due to back log, and my OCD which doesn't like leaving things incomplete.

Foe the most part though, I've done more in more games because of trophies or achievements than I ever would have before them. It was rare I'd set a personal goal to 100% everything in a game, and a single play through of most games was enough.

Anyhow...next article..."why trophies and achievements are best earned on the Switch".

“Achievements in this sense are antithetical to the core soul of each game they release.”

Many of Nintendo’s own individual titles such as Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros Brawl/4/Ultimate, Fire Emblem Warriors, Miitopia, Bayonetta 2, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Xenoblade, & Wario Land: Shake It have separate Achievement systems of their own. You gonna say that is antithetical to their core as well? Why throw shade at a system wide feature yet neglect how this same system has been integrated into individual various games for a far longer period of time as well?

Achievements and Trophies are things that can help add replayability to a game. You can even skip them if you don’t fancy them. They’re a benefit to people who are interested in them and can be turned off by people indifferent to them. There’s no legitimate downside to their existence.

EddieNX 2129d ago

Can't argue with that. I just don't pay attention to them on my Xbox and don't miss them on my Switch.

fonger082129d ago

I will be the first to admit I would love an achievement like system in Nintendo games... particularly the old games. But over the years I’ve noticed that while achievement/trophy hunting might boost a games replay ability, I’ve found myself caring less about that and just enjoying a good game all over again. Enjoying Horizon, Spider-Man, or god-help me Skyrim again isn’t about an achievement as I now will lovingly go back to Zelda BotW, Mario, or Octopath knowing I won’t gain points/trophies but the possibility of new fun experiences.

rainslacker2128d ago

Yeah, but make it centralized where others can see your achievements, that's antitithical. Nintend wouldn't promote community like that, even though it's been a core of their marketing since the Wii

TheEnigma3132129d ago (Edited 2129d ago )

I prefer achievements. I feel like I get my monies worth because it helps me keep track of what I've done. But Nintendo doesn't have it, so be it; no big deal.

I don't think I've ever rolled my eyes so hard in my life.

I know people who would choose a Dora the explorer game over something like a Witcher 3 or a red dead 2, just for the easier platinum.
Trophies can be a problem for some.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Aims to Complete the Erdrick Trilogy in Style | VGChartz Preview

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "PAX East was remarkable for a lot of reasons this year, but the appearance of a playable demo of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake made it truly special. For approximately 30 minutes, I played through select scenes from the revamped versions of both Dragon Quest I and II, to get a grasp on what role-playing adventures await us on October 30, when the package arrives on all current-gen systems, including Switch 2."

Review - Kulebra and the Souls of Limbo (Switch) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Oliver Shellding: "But other than that niggling issue, I had such a memorable, gorgeous time with Kulebra. A combination of Paper Mario, Coco and Undertale, this beautiful game brought me on a journey into unknown reaches of empathy, hope and utter heartbreak. It treated the player gently, touching on ideas of life after death without being aggressive or definitive, and it did so with absolute grace. It was a joy to explore, it never flagged, and I was dead set on finding and reading everything. Finally, I am at peace, and I simply must recommend this sweet memento mori to whomever it can reach. I promise: you won’t forget this."
