TurboGrafx-16 Mini: 50 Games, 100% Awkward

From the business side of things, it make perfect sense to not localize many of the text heavy games for this release. Because Snatcher alone would most likely cost so much to translate, that it wouldn't make any sense to do so.

However from the consumer side of things it is indeed a very awkward situation. Having more than half of the games included in a language that is not spoken on this side of the world. Overall I still think that it worth for the other 24 games, but it would be the best "mini console" if they went the extra mile to localize those games.

darthv722118d ago

Technically... snatcher is already translated. They can pull the text code from the sega cd version and apply it to the PCE build (if they really wanted to).

KingHippo192118d ago

Yup, I echo this. Could you imagine how much extra value this retro console would have if Snatcher was translated?

Vits2118d ago

Yes, but the translation itself is not the only issue. They also have to know how to apply the translated text to the game without breaking it, what I assume is not exactly a easy task as there is mostly likely little to no documentation on it. And if they want to use the Sega CD localization they would have to track down the person or group that holds the rights to it, what again might not be easy or cheap.

KingHippo192118d ago

@Vits All good points. It's definitely not an easy task. Still wish they made the effort for this game though, for example, the Star Fox 2 inclusion the SNES Mini made the console must have. I'm still getting the TG-16 Mini, just if they somehow had a version of Snatcher with English the console would be so much more valuable.

Vits2118d ago

@paulhunter
Oh yes I also wish that they went the extra mile with the localization of those games. But as it would be too much work for such a small market I get why they didn't.

Petebloodyonion2118d ago

Unfortunately, the Sega CD version had many references to Sega and the Sega CD.
Also, it's also important to note the memory space allocated to text.

Absolutely agree with everything you wrote. It makes total sense from a business perspective. As a consumer, have 26 of the 50 games not be in English is pretty awkward. I think the retro console is worth it for TG-16 fans, but still, it's awkward.

rainslacker2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

Many TG-16 gamers were used to importing anyways. It may be offputting to the newcomers, or those who only had their local English versions. Looking at the list, I don't see a lot of text heavy games on there.

ARESWARLORD2118d ago

Personally be buying this day one

rainslacker2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

I'm tempted, just because I'm a huge PC-Engine fan. But i have almost a complete PC-Engine/TG-16 collection already. If it was a PC-Engine mini with a working card port and CD-Drive, I'd definitely get it though.

Have to admit though, this is a damn good selection of games.

gamer78042118d ago

super disappointing... bonk 1 Japanese, bonk 2 English... guess a hard pass on this one.

jznrpg2118d ago

I don’t care give it to me. Loved my Turbo Grafx 16 back in the day and it comes with Ys Book 1&2 everything else is gravy

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH2118d ago

Who really cares? We all know what’s going to happen with this thing the minute it hits the market. It will get modded and people will ad their own games like ALL other mini consoles.

They absolutely will they always drop bad news right before the June showcase I bet they are waiting until after doom to do it.

Already one leaker hinting at it

"Already one leaker hinting at it"

I could be that leaker. Lol

It´s *obvious* that Gamepass prices will increase in the future like everything else.

But the fact that they haven´t yet shows that they don´t have plans to increase its price yet, which is awesome for us, Gamepass subscribers.

darthv726h ago

...and even if they do, I will still sub to it as [to me] its the best deal in town if you just want to play a large selection of games with no commitments.

people that want to grumble and complain about no ownership... yeah. that is what i mean by no commitments. And nothing is stopping me from buying the occasional title if it suits my fancy. i do that now already.

MrDead18h ago

MS buying up some of the industries biggest publishers, IP's and removing competition between major publishers means $80 games are here. This is MS saying to gamers, f**k you pay me if you want to keep playing the IP's you love.

This is what happens when more and more is owned by fewer and fewer and it's not going to stop at $80. No doubt now MS has opened the flood gates others will follow.

Thanks MS for endless proving that you're the worst.

slate9116h ago

With that logic, didn't nintendo open the flood gates for the $80 price tags? Lol

crazyCoconuts16h ago

Even worse, chickens, for what they're doing to those egg prices!

Obscure_Observer14h ago

"This is what happens when more and more is owned by fewer and fewer and it's not going to stop at $80. No doubt now MS has opened the flood gates others will follow."

Your ignorance and hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Nintendo started this $80 trend, just like Sony started the $70 price for games, but no one here ever heard you call them out.

ravens5214h ago

Sony didn't start the $70 price tag, Take 2 did with the release of NBA 2k21 in August of 2020. Get your facts right Observing Obscurely

Obscure_Observer14h ago

@raven52

Yes, they did. With ALL of its first party games!

DivineHand12514h ago

The tarrifts should not impact subscription costs it is already high as it is right now.

ocelot0713h ago

Everything is going to go up. MS only 6 months ago or so changed GP where you needed ultimate if you want all day 1 games. Wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the year they raise the price to $25-$30. Wouldn't be surprised if Sony also raise the price of ps+ and Nintendo doing it for their sub.

Fonsecap8h ago

The price adjustments were justified,by them, because of trump's tariffs. Is game pass also affected by tariffs, it's a survive not a end product?
