DieHard GameFAN Review: Mechanic Master (NDS)

DieHard GameFAN: "Mechanic Master is a lot of things, but the overall user-friendliness of the game is a mixed bag. While the actual gameplay in Puzzle Mode is incredible intuitive, the same cannot be said for Drawing Mode and Create-A-Level Mode, both of which have issues that get in the way of the enjoyment of each mode. Worse than these issues, though is the main menu, which doesn't even come close to making any sense. It consists of a series of planets and apparati, each of which bring you to a different mode or series or levels. Of course, Mechanic Master doesn't bother to tell you what each of these items mean, so starting a game can become a nightmare. The only way to figure out what you're doing is trial-and-error, not exactly the kind of first impression you want to make to a new gamer. Thankfully, once you get started, the game helps you through hints, which can be turned off if you'd like. The hints aren't over-the-top or subtle; instead, they provide just enough information to let you figure things out on your own. This is how hints should be, and Mechanic Master nails it."

WorthPlaying Review: Mechanic Master

WP writes: "Born in 1883, Rube Goldberg was a man of many talents. Most commonly known for being a cartoonist, he was also, among other things, an engineer and inventor. He is most famous for inventing the Rube Goldberg machine, a series of convoluted mechanisms that would join together to accomplish an otherwise simple task; it might involve an elaborate three-hour setup to light a match, for example, or a 17-step process to flip a pancake. Long after his death, the concept he brought to the world has survived, whether in cartoons or in board games or any of a number of other places. The Incredible Machine, another game that follows the same mentality, was a smash hit on the PC and has been impatiently awaited by Nintendo DS fans who want a more portable version. Midway has seized upon this gap and instead offered up the thematically appropriate Mechanic Master. Has Midway hit upon a gold mine, improving upon or at least reaching the quality level of the original? Not exactly."

HardGame2: Mechanic Master Review

It was only a matter of time before someone made a clone of the legendary The Incredible Machine for Nintendo DS. Midway was the first to react to this opportunity by creating a succulent classic that is very fun, challenging and an example of how everything should be in a good puzzle game.

Test Freaks: Mechanic Master DS Review

Test Freaks writes: "Puzzle games are simple to play, addictive and can be picked up quickly and put down easily. That is why games such as Tetris and Bejeweled are cell phone staples. The Nintendo DS platform is great for puzzle games due to its dual screen and touch interface. Midway decided to take advantage of this design with its latest puzzler – Mechanic Master.

This game features over one hundred levels of mind-boggling puzzles. The premise of the game is simple – clear each level of Aliens and save the trapped Humans; not much of a plot, but it is a puzzle game. Is plot really necessary in puzzle games anyway?"
