Pokémon Games Have Always Been Better Than Their Graphics

As fans learned more about the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield at E3 this year, a portion of them turned against the titles. Back in February, a Pokémon region based on the United Kingdom enticed players, and they constructed thousands of memes around the premise. Now, though, a subset of the Pokémon community is complaining about two elements of the titles: the lack of every single Pokémon ever created, which developer Game Freak addressed but does not plan to change, and the graphics and animations. The latter gripe is especially odd since the Pokémon franchise has never had especially good graphics or animations.

So true! I’ve never cared about the graphics

AspiringProGenji1752d ago

Still doesn’t excuse that the first ever Pokemon console game we have all wished for since forever still looks like a 3DS game

-Foxtrot1752d ago

Yup

All those wish lists, unreal engine 4 fan tech demos, fan concept art for the first big console Pokemon game. Instead we get an upscaled 3DS game.

Neonridr1752d ago

and feels like it fits in perfectly coming off of Sun/Moon.

PhoenixUp1752d ago

They were still good looking games for the platforms they were on

It only became a topic on concern with Sword and Shield because we can compare it to other console contemporary RPGs

lellkay1752d ago

Oh look it's the Pokemon defense force.

King_Noctis1752d ago

I dont think people play Pokemon game for graphic.

Lexreborn21752d ago

I stopped playing BECAUSE of the graphics. After you spend thousands of hours looking at the same generic interface with slight improvements from blue to diamond. It grows stale so I dropped playing them until X came out then I dropped them again for the foreseeable future.

With the amount of money this franchise makes releasing two copies of the same game for full retail of the platform. And only making small upgrades to remake an “old version” in the “current” engine. Is just greed to me.

So I’m good if others keep playing/buying cool for them. But I won’t be the one anymore

Lexreborn21752d ago

@Neonridr I’m sorry is this not a post discussing Pokémon’s graphics? Guess you can’t handle an open discussion where people express their experiences huh?

AspiringProGenji1752d ago

Im in the same boat but it wasn’t because of the graphics. I just got tired of the formula and how GF was playing it too safe. I couldn’t beat Black and White because it was too linear and boring, and too bad I missed BW2 which was apparently much better, then tried X and Y and I forced myself to finish it. I wasn’t much of a fan. I also skipped S/M and so far I Don’t feel like missing anything. With S/S I am still on the fence...

Pokemon needs to evolve and it is a shame that the first proper Console Pokemon game is just a touched up 3ds game. For shame GF

same
sword and violet just made me tired of the current format.

they rly traded a cohesive story and Lore for open region.

ZeekQuattro304d ago

As much as a fan of Pokemon I never was one to buy every new gen or spin off or remake. I bought Red & Blue. Played Ruby for a few gyms on PC. Played a bit of Fire Red again on PC but didn't buy a new entry until Black. After that I bought X and Moon. Then Let's Go Evee and Sword. Lastly I bought Violet. So it's hard for me to burned out on Pokemon.

franwex304d ago

Stopped caring after Gen 3 to be honest.

Dudeson304d ago

Same here, simply grew up and lost interest, but the nostalgia filter still hits for things like the old pokemon crystal.

FinalFantasyFanatic304d ago

It was Gen 2 for me, I just can't keep up with all the new generations of Pokemon they add in, I'm keen to jump into Violet/Scarlett though to see what's new.

got_dam304d ago

I always enjoyed these game until the newest ones. The open world is sooooo bland. I missed walking into some random house and getting a cool trade opportunity. Hell, I miss jut walking into buildings. There are not a lot of interior spaces in violet. And a motorcycle is not a pokemon. I don't care how mythic or whatever it is.

Because it’s an actual good game, gameplay wise. If we could get these mechanics on an actual updated Nintendo machine then it would’ve done even better.

-Foxtrot467d ago

Not really

It’s buggy, shallow compared to what we could have had in a logical generation jump and just doesn’t seem to hit what this franchise could do if it was made by a competent developer

It sold on the name because suckers eat that shit up

Inverno467d ago

Didn't take me long to realize that if you strip the open world it's pretty short. I will say that they definitely had better ideas this time around, but this is what we should've gotten at the start of the gen. If they were instead given the chance to skip a yearly release or two and work off what they made here they'd have something really good. Hopefully that Feb update fixes the performance issues so I can finish it.

gold_drake467d ago

i agree.

the game is rly bland and i had so many bugs it was crazy, like how does that even happen with a franchise like this ha.

Chard467d ago

So you played it after all? Does that make you a sucker?

Rutaprkl466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

I personally liked Sword/Shield more on launch compared to SV

gleepot466d ago

I love pokemon, but the games are starting to feel like they were made by an indie team in 1 year with no money and no QA

For being the most financially successful franchise ever, you'd think they could spend time and resources making an extremely polished experience.
