Spider-Man: Far From Home Director Talks Marvel's PS4 Game Influences

IGN couldn't help asking director Jon Watts if he was influenced by Insomniac's spin on Spider-Man in any way.

drpepperdude1753d ago

I can tell Spiderboy wasn't influenced by Spider-Man.

PhoenixUp1753d ago

Spider-Man taking that selfie towards the end seemed heavily inspired by the game

UltraNova1753d ago

Tbh, the game was by far the better Spiderman adventure than Far for home. The movie was a boring teenage romance camouflaged like a super hero action adventure. Sam Raimi's trilogy will never be surpassed at this speed. Thankfully a SM: Into the spiderverse sequel is in the making...

CaptainIronbat1753d ago

True. Though I think Martin Li in the game was completely useless.

ShadowWolf7121753d ago (Edited 1753d ago )

Sam Raimi's trilogy was crap. None of the characters were in-character, Peter acted more like Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent than Peter Parker (with a good dose of George McFly tossed in), the villains were WAY off, MJ had next to no character half the time and was simply used to advance the dramatic subplots, It was full of the WORST kind of cheese that, contrary to popular belief, was NOT in classic Spider-Man comics but rather a generic stereotype of old comics in general and Silver Age DC, particularly Superman...

Frankly, Raimi REALLY wanted to make a Superman sequel more than a Spider-Man movie and it shows, right down to the scene of Peter running and opening his shirt to reveal that emblem.

jukins1753d ago (Edited 1753d ago )

Lol this dude really said far from home was boring and Sam raimi trilogy will never be surpassed. Lmao. . . . Sam raimi trilogy was surpassed with just the civil war cameo.

Yourmommasaid1753d ago

@ShadowWolf712

I would agree with you on the first movie, while the third is actually forgettable. But Spider-Man 2 of the Raimi universe was actually dope, in which the game kinda mimics in terms of story with Doctor Octopus.

ShadowWolf7121753d ago

@Yourmom

Eh, yes and no. While the game does still retain Octavius in a sort of mentor capacity, it does also still have him much more in character.

Part of that though has to do with Ock's role originally being The Lizard in an earlier draft and the backstory portion only being given slight revisions. Hence the happy, friendly science guy with the wife and advice on how to woo a woman and so on.

Game Octavius is still friendlier but doesn't start making more wisecracks than Spider-Man himself, which is a trait he despised in the comics.

And Honestly, I have a lot of issues with Spider-Man 2 from a lot of angles but... eh.

rainslacker1753d ago

My only problem with Octavius in the game is he didn't really show up until the end. There was almost no build up between him and Spider-man being at odds with one another, other than one was the bad guy, and Spider-Man was the good guy. Doc Oc is one of my favorite comic book villians, and they did his good side well, but fumbled it everywhere else.

As far as Li, the confrontation was again really only because one was the good guy and one was the bad guy. The best villians I think are those that play some sort of counter to the hero, and neither really did that in the game.

The Death Of Arkham Has Me Worried About Spider-Man

Saad from eXputer: "After the rise of Rocksteady and its fall with post-Suicide Squad, I'm worried about Marvel's Spider-Man suffering a similar fate."

Hofstaderman20d ago

Why? According to the well publicized Insomniac leaks they have a slew of plans for Spiderman including its sequel.

CrimsonWing6920d ago

The sequel has had rumors that it could be sold piecemeal style or might be GaaS.

https://youtu.be/XCFr3KRB9G...

This is all coming from the leaks you mentioned. The problem is the industry is not doing well no matter how ill-informed people spin it on here when they see “sold 3 mill.” In those Sony leaks it showed the struggle to get ROI and they spend an insane amount of money to develop, which makes 0 sense to me when there’s not much to show for the increased development costs. Case in point would be Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight.

I believe we’re in the middle of seeing a drastic change in media and distribution. This goes for movies, but more so for games and the industry is scrambling to figure out how to get more money out of consumers rather than stick to the “buy it once” to play it all.

These are things you need to pay attention to in order to know which direction the wind’s blowing with this sh*t storm. I was almost certain the GaaS initiative was killed when Jim was leaving, but now seeing the success of Helldivers 2… I’m thinking we’re in for a bumpy ride. I just don’t know what that looks like yet, but I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

anast20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Insomniac still has a good generation left in them before they get cannibalized by investors. It'll probably happen around the mid PS6 gen, when we see the beginning of the fall.

dmonee20d ago

Huh with this article? If Sony and Insomniac want to abandoned the Spider-Man franchise and make a half baked, live service Spider-Man game, and miss the mark with their fans, then God bless’em!!!!

Seems unlikely when they abandoned the GaaS spiderverse game but are still going ahead with single player games like Wolverine and Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Ultimate Spider-Man use to be my favorite until Insomniac games took over.

Inverno154d ago

I'd still choose Ultimate above all other games, followed by Shattered Dimensions

Abnor_Mal154d ago (Edited 154d ago )

My favorite and still champion Spiderman PS2, followed by Marvels Spiderman2, then Miles Morales, followed by Marvels Spiderman, and finally Ultimate Spiderman.

I need to drag out my PS3 and try Web of Shadows, owned the game for years and years and never played.

Shout out to cultured vultures for NOT making this 40 separate pages.

Spider-Man (2000), Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions were all so good! I have fond memories playing them.
