Microsoft is hoping that Halo can help sell Project Scarlett, but there are reasons to doubt the franchise's staying power.
“You can certainly blame some of Halo 5’s sales shortcomings on the struggles of the Xbox One.” That’s no excuse for Halo 5 being the lowest selling mainline game in the series. Wii U struggled far worse than Xbox One, yet original Mario Kart 8 at 8.44 million units still sold more than Halo 5. “Halo 5 and the Master Chief Collection sold about as well as you’d expect relatively good games with a popular name on a relatively low-selling console to perform.” That’s still no excuse. For about 3 years Xbox One still sold better than Xbox 360 with launch aligned numbers, yet Halo still suffered commercial declines. Even Gears of War 4 is the lowest selling mainline title. Xbox One also sold more than the lifetime sales of N64 & GameCube yet its two biggest exclusives still sold less than some of the best selling titles on those systems. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...
Agree that it’s not Xbox it was the game tho it sold 5 million in 3 months and it has been confirm to have sold as good as the older halo titles it still didn’t do halo 3 numbers (15 million) I blame that on the lack of split screen the average campaign and a few other little things l The multiplayer was really freakin good though just not on the level of halo 3
yes halo 5 sold 5mil in 3 months with a install base of or around 20mil so I think its hard to say will it be a system seller because the hardcore xbox fans including me were already planning to get the next xbox anyway rather halo infinite releases on launch day of new system or not and with game pass now sales wont be a definite answer to if it succeed or not but review scores will.
Agree with what you said but It's MP is superior to Halo 3.
If Halo Infinite is a return to form then it will likely be a big draw. However as it will also be available on Xbox One and PC it won't be necessary to buy a Scarlett to play it, so some XBO owners won't be compelled to buy a Scarlett on day 1. If it turns out to be superb quality, than XBO owners when they are ready to upgrade to a next-gen system will want to continue the experience and likely choose to buy a Scarlett over a PS5
@343_Guilty_Spark As a PlayStaiton guy imma be honest with you dude.. NO WAY IN HELL IT'S MULTIPLAYER IS SUPERIOR TO HALO 3! Halo 3 is one of the greatest if not top 2/3 GREATEST Multiplayers OF ALLL TIMMEEEEEE!!!!
Wait until the game comes out?
Were are the Halo 5 and Gears 4 sales numbers?
I think that first quote pretty much answers the question of the title. If Halo isn't selling the system, then by definition, it isn't a system seller. When Halo 5 launched, it was well enough after launch, and the bad policies had been reversed, and there wasn't a huge spike in Xbox sales on Halo 5's release....so, riddle solved.
Halo hasn’t been a system seller since Halo 3
Not true Halo 4 and reach both sold 11 million and sold lots of Xbox 360s
just curious how did halo reach do?
Depends on the game; I mean it could be. I don't think Halo has driven Xbox sales in awhile - but it was definitely what got people interested in the original Xbox. Xbox loyalists aren't influenced by Halo as much these days.
Have to agree. A “good” halo is a system seller.. but it will be after release. A “hype” marketing push will not do much to move a needle after 8 years of Microsoft’s offerings or lack there of for must own titles made from Microsoft themselves
Day one scarlett for me with halo. I really want a custom halo edition console and not just plain xbox with a disc. I wont give that extra money if its just plain box with a disc. Not happening. Put masterchief engraving or print the cover screen on the box and make it look that its meant to be for halo. I will buy it.
It can be. But its going to have to be REALLY special. I think the one thing nobody talks about is the fact that Halo's original creator, Bungie is no longer making games in this franchise. There's a reason why many Xbox fans consider Reach as the last truly good Halo game. Its because thats the last one that Bungie made. When you lose the dev team that started the franchise, thats kind of a big deal. Not saying its impossible. Look at God of War. Whole different team, yet the PS4 game is amazing. However 343 has already had 2 chances to get it right and they havent yet. Maybe 3rd time will becthe charm.
@WickedLester You still have a large contingent of fans who complain that the latest God of War game should not be called God of War and that they changed it too much. I personally liked it but there were plenty of complaints about the new GOW from longtime fans/purists. As someone who has played every Halo game for it's singleplayer story only I will say that 343 did a good job with Halo 4 and it is one of my favorite Halo's story wise. Halo 5 was a disappointment but I respect the team for taking risks. Like you said Bungie is no longer making Halo games and if 343 tries to make a Halo game in the style of Bungie they will fail. They need to do like God of War did and change things up.
must be rly system seller ty rarbg :P j/k dont take it so hard as u take phils meow
Maybe cool it on the weed for the rest of the day.
Bro I'm high right now and I can't make sense of that.
u ppl are internet warriors and dunno whats rarbg or piratebay ? :D
I don't understand any of it my guy Haha
well for me personally there is no one game that's a system seller. I have to see games for that system in order for me to be baited in . but if there was one game that I would make me buy a system for it would be grand theft auto 6. but since that's multiplatform it doesn't count. but to answer the op question on halo..... its hard for me to give a answer on that since im already a halo fan
Well for me personally no game is a system seller since I buy all systems regardless so that way I don't miss out on exclusives. But as far as excitement levels for Infinite, I wouldn't say i'm really hyped since we haven't even seen any actual gameplay. But if the rumors going around based on the story and gameplay and such are true I'm excited for that. Plus I'm hoping 343 can use this slipspace engine to do some cool things. But really... we just need to see more before I can get really hyped. I liked Halo 4 SP and hated the MP, and I despised Halo 5 SP and like it's MP. So if Infinite can find the balance then I'll be happy. Edit: Woah tdogg^^ and I almost had the same opening statement but it ended complete opposites haha
lol well understood
I think a great halo game is still a system seller. Whether or not halo infinite will be a great halo game remains to be seen.
You can't argue with that.
Halo 5 lead me to pick up a Xbox one even though I had a ps4 it was the title I was waiting on as a fan that had played every entry. I was left disappointed but I still managed to get some enjoyment out of the console halo was just no longer the system seller in my eyes anymore. Quantum break, MCC, rise filled my gaming needs and I ended up absolutely loving sunset. The campaign of Halo 5 was arguably the weakest entry to date but it's unsurprising bungie had long since walked away obviously feeling like they had told the story they wanted to tell with a conclusion that meant that 4 wasn't needed. Can the franchise recapture the magic of combat evolved I think they can but they will need to really nail the writing but given 4/5 it's going to be a hard sell As for system seller well I'm not buying a scarlet just for Halo given Microsofts new direction I'm not even sure that's required any more still I have a pretty beefy rig 8700k and a 2070 i should manage to play it without the need of their next gen console but do I want to is the question
The next Halo won't sell me the Scarlett but a new Forza Horizon that redefines graphical fidelity will sell me one at launch.
Yes it is.
Listen, I have been critical of Xbox because I really want them to do better and yes Halo can be a system seller. But they just need to get back to the basics and just make a killer game. That's is all. Look what happened to God of War. Anything is possible but you just have to have a good team behind the game. Make the game that your fans want. I rather have Halo succeed rather than fail. But hey, what I'm saying doesn't fit the fanboy narrative on this site. Competition is good. Happy gaming people....
We will see once Infinite launches. We know that Halo 5 is the biggest selling Microsoft IP for the Xbox One by far, and with Halo Infinite launching for Xbox One, Scarlett, Steam, Microsoft Store and xCloud...I think it has a good chance of selling a lot of copies.
No but it certainly has its fans. I for one am a casual Halo player (only played the SP campaigns) but I have to admit the E3 2019 demo had my interest.
No. Not anymore. Not with Halo coming to PC now. It may cause more people upgrade their computer hardware though.
Will buy both the next Xbox and PS (already have Switch) so I can play all the best games on both systems. Don't care if Halo is a system seller or not.
god of war v halo : ROUND 1 ! --FIGHT!!
Buying an Xbox One to play Halo was not worth it for me. Buying the X4 to play Halo Infinite is certainly not worth it to me.
Halo needs a God of War 2018 rebirth
Halo doesn't not need to be turned into a 3rd person action adventure game.
Are you simple? I’m referring to revitalizing the series not the genre 🤦🏽♂️
Then why give the GoW example? A part of GoW's rebirth was its change in direction, style, camera etc. While I enjoyed GoW 2018 I personally think it lost a lot about what I loved of the original game. I don't think Halo needs that big of a rebirth, it just needs a better story Haha
Precisely because how they changed the direction, style, storytelling, and camera. I think Halo is tired at this point.
Aight, I respect your opinion, but that was my original objection. I don't think Halo needs to go into a 3rd person action adventure game (or some different genre) like GoW 2018 did. I feel it just needs a better story and maybe a reboot with a better alien threat, but changing everything that fans love about halo for its sp and mp I think would be a mistake unless it's a spin off
At no point did I mention 3rd person action adventure.
But you can see how I would think that's what you meant... you could have just said "Halo needs a rebirth", but as soon as you compare it to another game that had a rebirth into the 3rd person action adventure genre... I'm assuming you mean Halo should follow that formula as well.
Sort of... Anyone who's a Halo fan is already more or less guaranteed to buy or already own an Xbox for Halo.. it's not really the series it once was where it could sell 2.5 DAMN MILLIONNNN copies in 24 hours!!! loool but DOES Halo need to be a system seller anymore..? Not really either so Halo is in a really weird space atm...
Thats like asking if Uncharted is still a system seller, of course it is. Halo 5 was an awesome game, and I will have to definitely get back to some online play. Once Halo Reach releases on the MCC, I'll be all up in that, big time!
Yes it is still a system seller. If the next Halo has good reviews and positive feedback from early buyers it will sell just as well as Halo 2, Reach, and 4 which means 8-11 million. The 14-15 million that Halo 3 sold is a outlier. Some people may have forgotten how popular Halo is but I have not. Every main release seems to set some 24 hr or 1 week record. Before word got out that Halo 5 was a sub par Halo game it managed to set the opening sales record for the franchise which previously belonged to Halo 4.
It is still popular though.
