E3 2019: Microsoft looks poised to dominate the next console generation

Xbox puts on a stunning show in LA with new console details, studios and Keanu Reeves, but was it enough to capitalise on Sony's absence from this year's LA trade show? Here's VGC's analysis...

They did basically everything wrong you can do in a show:

- ONLY one new IP, Bleeding Edge (the leak was not their fault), a 4x4 MP game nobody asked for.
- Most of their games were made to appear as if they were only going to appear on the Xbox when they are actually Multiplatform.
- The footage for the actual exclusives in most cases were CGI trailers, even for games that already showed gameplay in years past like Gears 5.
- They used celebrities to promote their games, again gears 5 with WWE fighters that were there for no reason whatsoever, because they did nothing (Keanu was CD project Red so I will not count that).
- They showed mobile games, again Gears.
- They put a car on the show, but wait!! This time it was made out of Legos

And they talked about next gen with a pre-made video that basically said word for word in most cases what Sony said a month ago about the PS5 and Phil didn't even say that it was going to be the most powerful next generation console, he only said that it was going to be the most powerful xbox ever made.

Plus they had the chance to show us the first ever next gen footage to WOW us and they used it to show that underwhelming Halo Trailer.

P.s: I totally forgot, there was also Bambi smashing her head against a vending machine.

Yeah......the show wasn't bad. It was just......ok. The Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and Keanu Reeves made it worth watching. There was an extremely boring stretch after that including staring at Gears 5 facial animations. The Project Scarlett announcement was boring. The thing ended with a whimper. But overall, I saw some cool games so no, it wasn't a "shitshow".

it wasn't a shitshow by any means, but apart from Double fine - one of my favourite devs - they didn't really show anything during their presentation that would make me want to purchase their next console. They showed 1 new IP that is a genre I have no interest in playing, and with 7 new studio acquisitions last year, it's a little disappointing that the only thing they showed from those studios was DLC for SoD2, and a game that NT had been working on since 2014, prior to their acquisition.

What I meant by that was that they did not show us why we should trust them and buy an xbox1 before their next console...most of the games they showed will be on other platforms as opposed to Sony that has released Days Gone and still has Death Stranding to come. The only appealing exclusive on Xbox looks to be psychonauts, cyberpunk stole the show with Keanu’s announcement and that’s about it. Nothing else happened that caught my attention. When it came to showing actual gameplay it was pretty awful. If I were an Xbox owner, I’d be hyped up to finally play god of war in 8k on ps5. Microsoft is never going to win any generation. PlayStation is still more prevalent in the worldwide market than Xbox is. It’s for this reason that the lowest selling PlayStation home console still sold more than the highest selling Xbox home console.

Xbox 360 shows the absolute upper limit of how successful an Xbox console can really be. It’s really doubtful if Xbox Scarlett will be more successful than Xbox 360 now that competition is far more fierce and Microsoft making sure all exclusives will also be on PC. Xbox 360 had so much going for it and it still came up short of the 100 million mark whereas Sony’s console brand is going 3 for 4 in breaking the 100 million mark. PS5 will most likely follow suit. What chance does a later Xbox console have at crossing that coveted mark?

Meanwhile Sony shows that even when they falter on so many aspects they’re still capable of outselling Microsoft. PS5 will obviously be handled better than PS3, which is still currently the 5th highest selling console of all time at 87.4 million & outsold Microsoft’s best effort in the console space, so who seriously thinks Xbox Scarlet will somehow come out on top over PS5? It was smart of Microsoft to announce that Halo Infinite will be a launch title for their next console. As there are still a lot of Halo fans and you can guarantee there will be a Halo bundle. So i expect at launch the console will do well with it launching with Halo. However, they are unlikely to dominate next gen unless Sony really really screw up. What we know is E3 next year is going to a must see for both Xbox and Playstation fans.

Even at their peak, with their best console generation enjoying a whole years headstart, they couldn't dominate, they ended up losing out to Sony by the end of last gen. The consoles look to be quite close in spec, so that isnt going to be a factor, instead it will come down to popularity of the brand across the globe and who has a proven track record of delivering incredible games every generation.

The most boring e3 show ever not even announcing a new console did it for them since ps had beat them to it with similar specs

Square Enix just completely smashed it with their conference, they stole MS's thunder in my opinion, that show was much better than MS's.
