Can Sony Try To Steal The Show At E3 Without Mentioning PS5, Or Even Going?

Sony looks like it's taking this week as its own E3, in a way, by dropping some big trailers and possible release dates. Will this work as a counter to Microsoft's big hardware reveal?

phoenixwing2208d ago

This was very speculative writing. Two of sonys games are predicted by the author to have trailers coming up soon and for microsoft to have a new console reveal.

There is nothing to steal.
The hardware war is over.
You can not skip an entire gen without making/releasing one new AAA game and expect to be in demand.
Great for Xbox fans if they do not have to buy consoles next gen instead of games..
but I would expect Microsoft to talk about the “future” AGAIN.. although Phil “does not like to talk about games unless they are releasing soon”. They will though.
Gears this year, maybe another forza, halo next year with a early beta, then trailers for what will be in the future with the obvious first on Xbox smaller games etc.

nucky642208d ago

"You can not skip an entire gen without making/releasing one new AAA game and expect to be in demand."

very good point.

T2X2208d ago

True in many ways, but MS still has a huge presence in people's living rooms just the same. I don't have an XB, I'm a Sony fan, but so many of the people I know have XB. So they are in demand still.

gam3r_4_lif32207d ago

Ryse, Quantum Break and Sunset overdrive were new AAA games.

aconnellan2208d ago

“You can not skip an entire gen without making/releasing one new AAA game”

Would you mind clarifying this?

BLow2208d ago (Edited 2208d ago )

You know exactly what he meant. Xbox OG-Halo. 360-Gears. X1-Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay, Record,Super Lucky's Tales (this game actually was at the launch of the X). Which one of those made ANYWHERE close to the same impact of just the 2 games I mentioned in the previous 2 generations.

That's the clarification. We need to stop making excuses for MS. We are all gamers here at the end of the day and MS blew it this gen period. Even when Sony was down with the PS3, they STILL invested in games and studios during the generation and released a bunch of games to see what would stick. MS this gen has done nothing in the past 3,4,5 years?

The quality of these games are night and day. Even MS heavy hitters aren't performing like they used to. Now, I know the other excuse. Well they did buy some studios so why are people still upset? Because games take time to develop. The great ones take over 4 years to produce. So that means this entire gen was a waste. And some of the studios they bought, in my eyes, are questionable. But that's just me.

I just want them to become competitive again. Right now it's just a wait and see approach. They will show Halo, Gears, and Forza at E3. Those are a given. Could we please see something else that might be that next big game? Something that looks like you put some money and talent behind it?

I can go on but I think you get the clarification on this particular subject. We need to quit making excuses for MS. Enough is enough. You can be a fan and still be critical. People need to put their personal feelings aside for a moment and wake up!!

I hope this was clear.......

No need. You know what he means. I know what he means. Would you mind not leaving redundant comments?

Knushwood Butt2207d ago

'while turning a blind eye to everything else. like sonys censorship and pc culture and whatnot. '.

PC culture. Didn't Days Gone get called out for a gruff, white male main character?

Whatnot??

Is this the best you can come up with?

gam3r_4_lif32207d ago

@Blow so Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Titanfall and Recore and Ryse didnt happen

chiefJohn1172207d ago (Edited 2207d ago )

Dude skips the higher rated exclusives and only name the lower rated ones as if it's all that released on Xbox lol. That like saying Sony hasnt put any good game on PS4, the order, gt sport, knack, days gone.

ROFL you're not serious are you? So Games like Sunset OD never existed? Prepare to be surprised.

Rude-ro2207d ago

Those were bought.
Microsoft... someone trying to be a “gaming” company, did not make those games.
They added nothing new to this gen.

rainslacker2207d ago (Edited 2207d ago )

MS often surprises me in how little they actually impress me. Sometimes with their complete lack of forethought, but a lot of that has diminished since the first couple years.

RosweeSon2207d ago

And a new car people excited by the fact it’s the longest biggest whatever pr spin they using this year obviously forgetting they wasted enough time one year revealing a car, an actual car.. at a games show 😑🤣

rainslacker2207d ago (Edited 2207d ago )

You assume this next E3 will be about this gen for MS. While they'll have the Halo and Gears stuff there, they've already written off this gen, and with Sony already on the attack with next gen info, MS is probably going to start talking more about how great they're going to be in the future. It's what they've done for the last few years now, and hopefully with the new studios, they'll have something to show. I don't expect a lot of game play reveals, but probably some teasers about what will be coming in the future. Maybe a couple for X1, probably most as cross gen, then one or two next gen titles. If they even bother to announce that much.

Unfortunately, at this point, I don't think Spencer can afford to keep to his principals and not announce games too early like he said he wouldn't because he wanted to pander to the Xbox fan boys who were laying into Sony about how they announce games too early.

But, it's a double edged sword, because if you're not a die hard fan of Xbox, you have to ask yourself if MS is worth supporting. Even their staples didn't get regular releases this gen, except Forza. They had some good games at the start, but since then, it's been one or two AAA game a year, and up until this year, one of those was always a Forza game.

Even if MS had a stellar line up for X2, I'd have to question if they'd maintain that. The X1 had a great first couple years. The 360 had a great first 4-5 years. The OGXbox was more spread out, but had some new games. But some fans of Xbox around here seem to really define what they expect is acceptable output when they criticize Sony, but when MS drops well below that threshold, they don't hold MS to that same expectation. To put it in perspective, MS output the last couple years, is less than that one year where Sony had it's lowest output for the PS4....the year they said they had a sparse holiday. But, nary a concern from the apparent Xbox fans who say everything is going great, and the future is bright for Xbox...even though they seem to have problems with things like delayStation. Or they'll talk up indie titles, whereas Sony gets indieStation. Complete double standards, and they never bother to address it except to say, "nu-uh, MS has this or that, or Sony is evil because -insert random fan boy argument thought of by some other smarter fan boy from YouTube or reddit".

Sony has done this before. I remember a while back MS also had a big announcement and that very same day Sony took the wind out that MS sail by dropping a GOW gameplay trailer. So its quite possible that could be looking to overshadow E3.

...how did a site that's primary focus is selling digital keys get posted here?

Now I see they're using this poorly written "article" to push digital keys "Will you be diving into the fight? You can find a cheap Helldivers 2 key in our price comparison."

It's a price comparison - how do you think news sites make money? At least this page isn’t selling your data to advertisers or anyone who wants it.

"Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million units copies in the 9 weeks since its release. Interestingly, 37% of those who purchased the game had not bought any first-party game from Sony in the past 2 years."

Not that Sony released a bunch of games during that timeframe huh?!!

RaiderNation218d ago

Release a great game at a reasonable price and it sells. Wow what a concept! :)

Cacabunga218d ago

So Sony wants to be good old Sony? Not a bad idea but then stop with horizon milking and gaas for a while

Eonjay217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

I don't really think people would very harping on GAAS if Sony had released more single player games. Although my two most played games this year are Sony's Helldivers 2 and Microsoft's Call of Duty... which are both GAAS.

Sony is big enough to make both work but they should do more of this and let their fans know the single player games are coming (even though we already know about at least 8 of them)

By the way this is good news. I love their single player games too.

Relientk77218d ago

Yes, that would be great, do that. We sure got some bangers this year with Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, and FFVII Rebirth.

RaidenBlack218d ago

2025 Yotei and DS2
2026 Wolverine + Horizon MP
2027 Naughty Dog new IP and Venom
2028 Santa Monica new IP and FFVII-3
2029
2030 Physint

goken218d ago

I hope they manage Yotei properly, put a gag order on that Voice actor, stop her from antagonising the whole player base.
Seriously, they should have been more careful choosing who represents their games. I have no issue with her, but i do see why her choice may be a concern for many people. It’s just not a risk worth taking

goken218d ago

All great games, but i think Sony talking about 1st party and i think in their minds Astro Bot isn’t one of those big games and wasn’t expected to be as successful as it turned out.

TheKingKratos218d ago

Finally... Sony this gen seems to learn all the mistakes Microsoft done and just repeated them.

TheKingKratos218d ago

Sony still on board with that sh1t too

No wonder this gen is so damn slow and boring... I need to see what Ps5 can do and play amazing single player games but the output has been very poor so far and we still see Cross gen games and now they release another Ps5.2

Notellin217d ago

Yeah Indiana Jones, Avowed, Doom, Fable, Clockwork Revolution, Perfect Dark, and Everwild are all GAAS.

Oh wait you're a liar and just making stuff up.

Cacabunga217d ago

Check their last showcase and let us know once more.. you are so clueless and speaking of pure ignorance..

goken218d ago

Yup about sums it up. At least some one at HQ is stepping in to steady the ship.

RaidenBlack218d ago

But what about smaller experimental/more-fun projects?

Abriael218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

They closed all the studios that did these. Japan Studios, Pixelopus, etcetera.

northpaws217d ago

I think we will only get those from indie developers now.

anast217d ago

Not enough people buy them, even the ones that clamor for them.

BlackCountryBob217d ago

Unfortunately 97% or PS5 owners didn’t buy AstroBot, they’re a money making enterprise in the end and if people don’t buy the games, they won’t keep making them

DarXyde217d ago

The problem with that approach is the scope of gaming contracts. There's a reason we're seeing fewer experimental titles and many of the newer ones play similarly to popular games.
