Can Sony Try To Steal The Show At E3 Without Mentioning PS5, Or Even Going?

Sony looks like it's taking this week as its own E3, in a way, by dropping some big trailers and possible release dates. Will this work as a counter to Microsoft's big hardware reveal?

Gears this year, maybe another forza, halo next year with a early beta, then trailers for what will be in the future with the obvious first on Xbox smaller games etc.

True in many ways, but MS still has a huge presence in people's living rooms just the same. I don't have an XB, I'm a Sony fan, but so many of the people I know have XB. So they are in demand still.

You know exactly what he meant. Xbox OG-Halo. 360-Gears. X1-Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay, Record,Super Lucky's Tales (this game actually was at the launch of the X). Which one of those made ANYWHERE close to the same impact of just the 2 games I mentioned in the previous 2 generations.

That's the clarification. We need to stop making excuses for MS. We are all gamers here at the end of the day and MS blew it this gen period. Even when Sony was down with the PS3, they STILL invested in games and studios during the generation and released a bunch of games to see what would stick. MS this gen has done nothing in the past 3,4,5 years?

The quality of these games are night and day. Even MS heavy hitters aren't performing like they used to. Now, I know the other excuse. Well they did buy some studios so why are people still upset? Because games take time to develop. The great ones take over 4 years to produce. So that means this entire gen was a waste. And some of the studios they bought, in my eyes, are questionable. But that's just me.

I just want them to become competitive again. Right now it's just a wait and see approach. They will show Halo, Gears, and Forza at E3. Those are a given. Could we please see something else that might be that next big game? Something that looks like you put some money and talent behind it?

I can go on but I think you get the clarification on this particular subject. We need to quit making excuses for MS. Enough is enough. You can be a fan and still be critical. People need to put their personal feelings aside for a moment and wake up!!

You assume this next E3 will be about this gen for MS. While they'll have the Halo and Gears stuff there, they've already written off this gen, and with Sony already on the attack with next gen info, MS is probably going to start talking more about how great they're going to be in the future. It's what they've done for the last few years now, and hopefully with the new studios, they'll have something to show. I don't expect a lot of game play reveals, but probably some teasers about what will be coming in the future. Maybe a couple for X1, probably most as cross gen, then one or two next gen titles. If they even bother to announce that much.

Unfortunately, at this point, I don't think Spencer can afford to keep to his principals and not announce games too early like he said he wouldn't because he wanted to pander to the Xbox fan boys who were laying into Sony about how they announce games too early.

But, it's a double edged sword, because if you're not a die hard fan of Xbox, you have to ask yourself if MS is worth supporting. Even their staples didn't get regular releases this gen, except Forza. They had some good games at the start, but since then, it's been one or two AAA game a year, and up until this year, one of those was always a Forza game.

Even if MS had a stellar line up for X2, I'd have to question if they'd maintain that. The X1 had a great first couple years. The 360 had a great first 4-5 years. The OGXbox was more spread out, but had some new games. But some fans of Xbox around here seem to really define what they expect is acceptable output when they criticize Sony, but when MS drops well below that threshold, they don't hold MS to that same expectation. To put it in perspective, MS output the last couple years, is less than that one year where Sony had it's lowest output for the PS4....the year they said they had a sparse holiday. But, nary a concern from the apparent Xbox fans who say everything is going great, and the future is bright for Xbox...even though they seem to have problems with things like delayStation. Or they'll talk up indie titles, whereas Sony gets indieStation. Complete double standards, and they never bother to address it except to say, "nu-uh, MS has this or that, or Sony is evil because -insert random fan boy argument thought of by some other smarter fan boy from YouTube or reddit".

Sony has done this before. I remember a while back MS also had a big announcement and that very same day Sony took the wind out that MS sail by dropping a GOW gameplay trailer. So its quite possible that could be looking to overshadow E3.

I'll break it down for you - We know what Sony is releasing for the remainder of the gen. They didn't need a press conference to show a few trailers and updates. Now when it comes to 3rd party games, whatever is shown at the ms conference will all be releasing on PlayStation anyway.

So Sony goes ahead and drops the trailers alluded to in the previous paragraph and BOOM! They've won E3 without being there.

BTW - check out the new Death Stranding trailer, it's RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!!!

Sony dropping their own bombs outside of E3 generates more hype than what's going on with 3rd party games, BUT they all end up on PlayStation.

Example - ms shows a new trailer for CYBERPUNK 2077, my most anticipated 3rd party game. Congrats ms - you just promoted a PS4 game also.

Dozens of games doesn't mean much, if they're not good games. Or, if the games are available on other console platforms, then I don't see the reason to give MS the win for that, but it's nice to see what I can play on my PlayStation, so fair game, and I'm fine when Sony shows multi-plats as well...because I like reveals.

MS needs impressive announcements about their brand. A great show to do that in is a bonus for those watching, but announcing a bunch of multi-plats isn't going to "win" them E3. Halo and Gears showings is a good way to win, but unless they significantly improved on the series, it's hard to say if they'll "win" the show. Things like TLOU2 are still kind of fresh for gamers, so the rather impressive showing can "win".

Overall, Sony can win with it's exclusive games, which is where they have the upper hand over MS. MS hasn't shown a single game this whole generation which I feel is worthy of winning an E3. However, I think the biggest win for Sony this gen, was actually with the FF7R reveal, so, they won without showing a game they were developing. The reason I feel they won that is because I watched that conference at the PS Experience in the theater, and the audience went apeshit at the end. Other showings from other theaters on youtube pretty much showed the same thing. Reactions on the internet expressed the same thing.

MS just has nothing on that level, and outside PlayGround, and maybe Obsidian, their new studios aren't the kind of studios that make that level of game. Obsidian is working on a multi-plat game. PlayGround has a chance to impress. Their newly created studio is still in pre-prodution and still hiring staff, so while they could have a teaser which could "win", it's not likely going to release this gen, or even in the next 3-4 years.

That said, I think Square has the biggest chance to win this E3. I'm not going to give Sony the win for E3, because they aren't having a conference to judge. They can possibly steal some thunder from the event, but I think the whole point of not going to E3 was to be able to give their announcements more focus. It has the added benefit of allowing the other publishers at E3 to have more time in the spotlight, because too often, they don't get as much press. MS will get it's press like it always does, but now, neither have to share the time, and Sony doesn't have to risk having bigger announcements oevershadowed by something else...although they've been doing pretty good this gen.

Did I say Sony would win? I think Sony isn't attending, so they aren't even in the running to win. If by chance they somehow still win, then damn....MS is in a lot more trouble than has been said so far, and most of the trouble they have now is more about just being able to deliver for their customers, instead of just making promises for their customers.

My first paragraph was my response to you. The rest was my own take on what they needed to win, followed by me saying I think Square has the best chance to win.

As far as wasting my time. It's not really a waste for me. I can type extremely fast. Sometimes faster than I can think. I wasn't refuting what you said, just suggesting that showing dozens of games doesn't mean much if those games fail to excite the people watching, or those who get the info afterwards.

Today, MS said they'd have 14 games from their internal studios to show. I question how many of them will release for the X1, because almost all the studios they brought aren't going to be in a position to release a new high profile game within the next two years, and we already know what they were working on with the studios they had before.

I actually hope Sony doesn't drop any trailers right before, during, or within a week of E3 ending. Not that I want them to remain silent, but too often, the console makers take up a lot of the media's attention, and there are other publishers and developers there who spend a lot of money to get that time in front of the press.

Sony doesn't need E3, but I don't think they should actively try to distract from it. It may not be as relevant as a way to get information to the press or consumer anymore, but it's still an important show for a lot of people in the industry. Hell, websites are already trying to keep the war of who will win going before it comes around, because they know they won't be able to bank on those articles without making up hyperbolic articles such as this one, and we're likely to see them after the conferences as well.

So, i guess the games media still sucks, and can't just be happy reporting what actually happened at E3.

Sony had more games for each of the two years after launch, than MS has released total in the last two years total. two of the games they released in the last two years started under the old regime.

Somehow, I don't think it's Sony that is neglecting their fans here, because they are the ones that are delivering games on a pretty regular basis. Even if Sony had slim pickings the first two years of the PS4...which they really didn't, there was never any feeling that they weren't going to deliver as time went on. MS liked to talk about how they'd have all these games to deliver, but it was all smoke and mirrors, and now the gen is almost over, and they're finally showing signs of life of doing what they should have done long before this gen started.

It's almost a given they will have a State of play during E3. They will show off a few new trailers and gameplay and maybe even announce a new game or two as well as a few release dates.

I think State of Play will be a few days-a week prior to E3, or maybe a week after. I think doing it during E3 kind of defeats the purpose of not going...which is to highlight their wares without having to share the spotlight, and give more games time to shine. Doing it during E3 just seems like they'd have to share the press time, and most of the gaming press will be at E3.
