Days Gone review — A great game that loses itself in the wilderness of bugs | Venture Beat

Days Gone is a great game with a great story. Fighting the zombie hordes is fun. But it has a very large number of bugs for a Triple-A game.

The bugs i’ve encountered with 1.07

Massive framerate dips when riding my bike in the end game.
My health/staminia bar flickering when I get on my bike.
Riding through Crater Lake and suddenly the landscape became flat with no textures and pixelated trees.
T pose character opening up a camp gate.
Textures not rendering in cutscenes.
Horde healthbars not showing up, which means I had to reload the area and do it all over again but with less supplies.
Pressing square to interact with something and it doesn’t work, i need to reposition my self for it to work. When I interact with monuments my character walks around in a circle to reposition himself to interact with it.
Navigation routes not showing up to destinations.
Characters not being in locations to initiate missions.

Even after all of these bugs i’ve still liked the game quite a bit. The last scene with O’Brian made my jaw hit the floor. The sequel is gonna be epic.

"Horde healthbars not showing up"

I didn't even know they had health bars. I've never once seen it.

2192d ago
Dark_Knightmare22191d ago

I’ve killed 22 horses and have yet to see this health bar people say they have lol

TheGoodestBoi2191d ago

These horde health bars only appear late game, near the end

criticalkare2192d ago

Yeah, no doubt it set up for sequel or dlc i prefer they do sequel with all the improvement

himdeel2191d ago

Somewhat agree. I want then to fix the current bugs and glitches, then focus on a sequel.

chiefJohn1172192d ago (Edited 2192d ago )

Did you get the invisible motor biker glitch? Riding on air is my idea of stylin' and profilin'

2192d ago
SyntheticForm2192d ago (Edited 2192d ago )

I've encountered a few of these, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they kill the experience. What kills the experience and is unforgivable are the audio and syncing issues.

I'm aware this isn't universal, but it ruined the final parts of the game for me.

Zeke682191d ago

Sound bugs are typical Unreal Engine bugs on the PS4 systems. I do hope they switch to Decima engine or so next gen. That engine is tailored for Playstation 4 and 5 by Guerilla Games and Mark Cerny.

SyntheticForm2191d ago

Also, (and I don't know if this is a bug or not) I'll kill a deer, only for the game to spawn an investigation circle. I 'know' who killed the deer. I KILLED THE DEER.

These circles appear throughout the game, and when all is right, are a good way to lead you to rewards (hostages) and being ambushed, which you can consider a reward also since these areas you're whisked away to often have scrap and supplies.

Has the author not played any games at all in recent memory? It doesn't matter if it is Triple-A game or not pretty much all games are buggy at launch any more.

DaDrunkenJester2192d ago

Not to the extent Days Gone is. Especially when you see it as a Sony exclusive and compare it to their other quality games. They may not be game breaking bugs, but there are a lot of bugs that a triple A exclsuive shouldnt have.

PiNkFaIrYbOi2192d ago

It doesn't matter really if it is an exclusive or not. There are very few devs anymore that don't release a buggy game. That is why you see day one patches for most games any more.

rainslacker2191d ago (Edited 2191d ago )

I experienced more bugs in RDR2 in the same amount of time I've played DG, than I have experienced in DG. A few minor gliches in graphics here or there, usually involving clipping. Only bug I got, which was more a technical issue, was my bike got stuck in a road sign. One of those on two posts. I eventually got it out, but it was kind of annoying. I wasn't doing much at the time. Just happen to be driving and ran into it by mistake, so it wasn't a mood killer. Just made me want to try harder to control the bike, as if you full throttle it, it's hard to control early in the game.

It's odd I didn't see a lot of bug reports for RDR2, and it was getting 9's and 10's. yet this game, it's apparently so bad that it needs to be highlighted.

Hell, any given Bethesda game is pretty much going to be chock full of bugs. So much so that it's an understood meme that its just part of the game....even across multiple platforms over a decade of multiple releases where they don't even bother to fix them. No patches, just bugs...sometimes game breaking. Yet, they never get dinged for it. Maybe FO76...but most reviewers dinged it for content and game play.

DaDrunkenJester2192d ago

@PiNk

Yes even the most polished game usually has a launch patch, but even after several patches for Days Gone, there are still a lot of bugs. You look at Spiderman, God of War, Uncharted, and even Horizon ZD was a from a developer who was inexperienced with open world games, but didnt have the fraction amount of bugs DG has.

PiNkFaIrYbOi2192d ago

I did say very few devs will release a game that doesn't have a lot of bugs.

Give it a few months, game should be polished up good after awhile. It's in house so Sony will support the game with patches. Should have been delayed to summer.

Days Gone PS5 Is a 'Really Good Piece of Work', Say Tech Experts

Sammy writes: "Back when Days Gone Remastered was announced, many fans were squinting to see the differences between the excellent original PS4 version and its PS5 re-release.

But now with the game readily available – and our 8/10 review declaring it the “definitive version of a fan favourite” – we’re beginning to get some meaningful tech analysis.

And according to Digital Foundry, this is not just the bare-bones resolution upscale some had anticipated – “a lot of effort has gone into it”, according to the tech experts. "

First game sell well enough to warrant a sequel? Our received well enough?

Alos8811d ago

It sold well but reviewed only okay, which apparently wasn't enough for Sony.

Cacabunga11d ago

Sold well and received even better.. had a bad first month due to technical issues but ended up being one of the best games from last gen

Knightofelemia11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

That's the nature of the beast. If a game like a movie does not meet certain numbers then they write off the franchise. EA scrapped DS2 because the DS1 remake did not meet certain numbers. I was hoping the remaster of DG and the fact it also came to PC would convince Sony to green light a DG sequel.

PanicMechanic11d ago

Critic reviews were appalling. The worst reviewed game I’ve ever seen. By that I mean, poor quality journalism, dishonest writing and review scores which are out of touch with fan reception.

Huge difference i must admit, but not sure i would notice without 2 screens next to each other.

Not getting this game still, i want a new game and im tired of remasters

Muigi16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

It’s $10 and there are plenty of games out there for you.

Flewid63816d ago

Then its not a huge difference?

Killer2020UK15d ago

Of course you wouldn't, nobody would. If you have never experienced the other, then you don't have the reference needed for comparison.

TheEroica15d ago

Sony getting ready to milk some more people on dumb products.... I can see the psvr1 and 2 owner salivating over days gone remaster. Lol. What a ruse song is pulling.

Knushwood Butt15d ago

How can Sony milk customers if it's such a 'dumb product'? If it's so dumb, nobody will buy it, and there's no milking.
Plus, there's nothing preventing people from getting a copy of the PS4 version.

15d ago
Babadook715d ago

As a PSVR2 owner. Yup. If there’s a VR version I would be there day one.

Greg280115d ago

There are plenty of people who never had a chance to play this game, now they can with the remaster.

Don't understand why people who already played the game complain about a remaster. No one is forcing you to buy it. There are plenty of new games to play

MoonConquistador1d 12h ago

And then there's a group of people who did play the game, thought it was awesome and would be happy giving it another play through.

Unfortunately I'm one who only got it on the PS5 instant game collection so no path for a 10 quid upgrade for me.

marioJP8715d ago

Huge difference where? Besides blue color filter and darker lighting?

Remastered.....

Tedakin16d ago

Sony is now remastering games with 71s on metacritic.

Bathyj16d ago

Like that's a judge of anything
This game got scored before it was released.

andy8516d ago

Days gone is 85+. It got heavily marked down at launch for bugs where as others get a free pass for that. It's a fantastic game.

MoonConquistador1d 12h ago

One of my favourites actually, I thought it was fantastic from beginning to end.

Kosic15d ago

And it's not even a big overhaul remaster. It's list turning up the graphic level by one. It's quite embarrassing, as the original wasn't that bad. And the remaster isn't that noticeable

PanicMechanic15d ago

“And it's not even..”

Bugs bunny NO meme

TheEroica15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Poorly remastering if images are to be believed.

Tapani15d ago

To me it was very close to The Last of Us Part I. It was that good quality.

PanicMechanic15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Shut up. Best open world zombie game on the market

I spoiled myself by modding this game on my PC. Genuinely one of the best looking games I've ever seen. Whilst this remaster looks nice it just doesn't compare to that sadly. It shows the effort that these remasters could put in if they wanted

REDGUM16d ago

I so hope this game or DLC for those of us who own the original sells well.
Ive said it before, its an underrated game for sure & was unfairly judged upon release.
Please try this game if you haven't already.

For those who say 'i won't purchase digital only' you can pickup a hard copy for 5 bucks here in Australia, then add the DLC and you have a superb game for $20 or so.

Give it a shot, tell me I'm wrong After completing the game.

Game on gamers.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH16d ago

It was full of bugs at release I wouldn’t call that being unfairly judged. If you want your game to score well then release it in a completed state. Now with that being said I think the game was pretty good.

Knushwood Butt16d ago

It really wasn't.
The worst I encountered was a horde spawning on top of me when exploring a cave.
Did you even play this at launch?

S2Killinit15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

It wasnt full of buggs, it was very playable. That was the excuse for the hit job at launch before people started to speak up about how great the game was.
