Why Far Cry is more Important than Halo, CoD and Resistance

This article explores the significance of the Far Cry series and how some so-so reviews are hiding the fact that the technical feats achieved in the recently release Far Cry 2 are more important to gaming's progression than what has been seen in the other top FPS games of this generation.

"it is the FPS that has raised the bar in 2008. And as such, it will be the game other developers measures themselves on in 2009."

but I kind of agree.

The more I play Far Cry 2 the more I find. It really is an awesome game. I froth at the thought of what Ubisoft will do with the Dunia engine next... Beyond Good & Evil 2?

Mr_Bun6079d ago

I wasn't too interested at first with FC2 but the more you play it, the better it gets. I went from 'wanting to trade it in after a week' to 'not wanting to put the game down'

thewhoopimen6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

yeah i just love how enemies at checkpoints respawn minutes after you leave the area. You'd think logically they could have them respawn the next day or something.

Or better yet, how the enemy ai is so smart it will rush toward a jeep when they see you, but rather than mount the 50 caliber and shoot, he will sit in the drivers seat, start the car, and then get up "minutes later" to switch to the gun.
I've had so much "fun" (not) driving my jeep into a village and luring them into the stupid jeep, where they all perform the stupid sit in the driver seat sequence (whereupon i shoot them).

Couple that with the 2 minute respawn and it is a literal b1tch to get anywhere in the game.

Kill an animal in certain parts of the map and watch as their body starts crawling around the landscape. Oh ya, its Africa, where are the f**king lions. Enemies don't char when burnt.

Literally to me, this game has even more gameplay limitations then GTA IV, since the game seems to revolve around get here and kill someone. or kill lots of people and free someone.
Or better yet, explore an area go and then later take a mission only to find out that you have to go back to the exact same area where you kill the same exact enemies again. There is simply not enough enemy differentiation or gameplay variety.

Dashmoney1016079d ago

The story was terrible. I wasnt interested in it at all.
The AI is completely idiotic and respawn WAY to quickly. This is extremely frustrating! It would be ok if it was easier to kill them much like in Halo or COD but these guyz dont wanna die.
IF you wanna drive or boat anywhere, IT SUCKS! Because of mountains you cant avoid guard posts and towns. They say there is 20 square mile to explore but half the damn map is mountains or deserts that you cant climb or drive through.
The game is just a hassle to play. Nothing is really all that fun to tell ya the truth. I HAVE THE STEALTH UPGRADE AND SILENCED WEAPONS AND THEY STILL SEE ME ALL THE TIME!

BattleAxe6078d ago

I thought this game would be awesome, but I was so wrong. I got to 69% in the game and basically was bored with it. This game isn't fun as it feels like a laborous task to get from one side of the map to the other.

The graphics were ok I guess and the gameplay was fine, but it was too repetative and the environments looked the same everywhere you go. The story didn't draw me in at all. The multiplayer part of the game was average with a small online community.

I traded this game in today for Resistance 2 and don't regret it at all.

Game play recording and playback
Forge map customization
Party based online gaming
Excellent use of lighting
Strategic play (bubble shields etc.)

SlappingOysters6079d ago

blind as a bat.

Halo 3 just polished Halo 2

Capt CHAOS6079d ago

took you to wade through the campaign, just so you could say you'd completed it.

SlappingOysters6079d ago

It's pretty average, bout 10-15hrs was enough for me.

Halo has the most deluded fanboys of any game I think. It is a sweet title and has brought a lot to gaming I agree... but it is just one of many. And I don't think it has been as influential as Far Cry, since no one has copied Halo... perhaps stupidly... until Resistance 2

Amnesiac6079d ago

Halo 2 > Halo 3 by a million miles...

Oh and lol @ Halo 3 inventing party based gaming. LOL. Did you play Halo 2 multiplayer AT ALL?

Capt CHAOS6079d ago

But still preferred halo3, better vehicles, bubble shields etc., and forge.

Sorry fc2 is nothing special.

Crysis eats it alive and then some.

FC2 has:

Boring story and i couldn't careless whats going on.
Gun Jam with every weapon(not in a googooplex)
NPC's that are more accurate at aiming then god.
Jeeps that appear out of nowhere.

It does not immerse you at all.

Lighting is good.
Engine does pretty well.
Graphics are decent.

I'd say the graphics are better then the content.

SlappingOysters6079d ago

kind of talking about design faults. The article is more referring to what the Dunia engine has achieved and brought to the world of gaming.

I hate the saves and the gun jams. I think those were silly.

But i am totally immersed in the world

n4gzz6079d ago

FC2 is good game for me. It can be crappiest game in the world but Its well worth 60 bucks for me.

god_o_war6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

i was totally into this game until 70% no new weapons to get story was gettin a bit bland but i think when i really started loosin taste was in the beginning of act 2 but act was so damn good wile it lasted

vickers5006079d ago

Translation: I suck at games :(

Cenobia6079d ago

@vickers500 - Real mature response. How does not liking a game mean you're bad at gaming?

That's his opinion, and I agree with him. There are no neutral people in the game (besides the neutral zone), and everyone hates you. There is no reason why, they just all want to kill you for no reason. Because of that the checkpoints and cars passing are extremely annoying.

There is no story. I felt like I woke up in a jeep at the beginning and everyone knew who I was and why I was there except me. The rest of the story was just checking missions off a list. I had no real choices, even though they pretended to give me some they all ended the same way. Some of the missions were fun, but the traveling to places wasn't, and you did way more traveling than anything else. Also, every side mission was extremely repetitive.

And he didn't even mention the multiplayer. I thought it would be pretty awesome since it had a map editor, but the game just isn't that fun online when I can actually get into a game. It takes like 10 minutes to even get in one, at which point the host has chosen one of 3 popular maps. After the game ends I'm immediately kicked to start the painstaking auto matching all over again.

The game looks good, but it isn't a good game. On a true 10 scale I'd give it a 6. It's decent, but it's only fun for a while. There is also no replay value unless you're an even bigger trophy whore than I am. How it received 9's is beyond me.

thebadrash6079d ago

I was pretty disappointed by this game (FC2) and will definitely be looking to return it...

Anyone else click on the link at the bottom

http://www.gameplayer.com.a...

Stellar list: they should throw the new Dead Engine from Dead Space on there too.

Dandiego6079d ago

I bought FarCry 2 and the controls threw me off it's like your playing in a boat everything feels like youre floating. I played it online and it's a joke. UBI Soft was the king of the last generation of consoles it seems the king is no more... Same goes in the console war. This generation I think there will be no king of consoles but I've got three consoles and don't you think it's great the quality of games coming out on all consoles... do you really think they would be that good if Sony was killing all other competition?

I DON'T

Farcry 3 and literally thats it! lol

GamingSinceForever834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I recently tried 3 for the first time but the frame rate was a turnoff.

I liked 5 and 6 though.

banger88834d ago

If you have a Series X or S, the Xbox 360 version runs at 60 fps with fps boost. It's a shame the remaster doesn't.

isarai836d ago

2 and 3, pretty much the only ones i really enjoyed. 1 was amazing for the time but aged quite poorly. 4 has the elephant gun, all i can praise from any entry after 3 lol

cooperdnizzle834d ago

Ummmm 3 than stop.

Okay maybe two as well. But yeah probably 3 and then move on.

JEECE834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

Far Cry 2. People constantly rant about games now being too easy, holding your hand, having too many unnecessary RPG-lite leveling features, etc. People specifically complain about open world games being too focused on tons of collectibles and "checkmarks" that just waste time.

Far Cry 2 is an answer to all of those complaints. It was made by Ubisoft before they fell into all the traps discussed above (and before they started inserting towers into their games to defog the map). It has respawning enemies, weapons that degrade, and the collectible diamonds are very useful in the game (which you find in a similar way to the way you find shrines in BOTW with a radar system). The map you have is an in game item you pull out while playing, not a pause menu that is unnecessarily detailed. Also the enemy AI and physics are much better than later entries in the series.

It has a mixed reputation because people at the time said it was too hard, the weapon degradation was annoying, and then respawning enemies were annoying. FC2 came out in 2008, so this was before games like Dark Souls and BOTW had come out and made it cool to like these types of features.

XbladeTeddy833d ago

Far Cry 2, the one with the AI that find you through walls and trees, can one shot you from a mile away and have 100% accuracy? That was frustrating not fun because cheap AI.

JEECE833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

Uhh, I mean, it isn't one of these games where once the enemies have detected you they will magically forget you exist because you walked behind a wall or went into a bush. And yeah the AI isn't stormtrooper level accuracy. Again, these are positives, not negatives to me.

To be fair, I'm really directing this at the people most critical of "Modern Ubisoft" or "Modern Open World" design elements. Like the type of people who fawned all over Elden Ring because it had a clean UI because they are so burnt out by the "checkbox" type of open world design.

If you like those types of games, then a later FC game like 3 and especially 4-5 would be more your style.

SonyStyled881d ago (Edited 881d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney881d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled881d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist881d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin881d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled881d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE881d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi881d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE881d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.

Far Cry 2 where your guns never ever jammed until you got into a gunfight is their best? I disagree.

MIDGETonSTILTS171003d ago

I liked 3 more.

The malaria angle was more annoying than immersive.

And, the enemy AI had too good of eyesight to allow any stealth. They’d spot you a literal half mile away, I hated it.

lonewolf101003d ago

Yeah, some weird mechanics for sure, some did really enjoy it, I certainly didn't.

bloop1003d ago (Edited 1003d ago )

The map was designed badly and an absolute pain to navigate from what I can remember too. You ended up having to go to the same few places all the time and there was a huge inaccessible area between them that you had to go around.

It definitely had the best physics system of the entire franchise, but a lot of the mechanics took the enjoyment out of it.

LordoftheCritics1003d ago

It was fun for its time but a bunch of those systems today won't survive a launch weekend.

Profchaos1003d ago

I'd say it was their most ambitious and had the best setting to date next to the original island.

But gameplay wise it was clunky and maybe it was released to early if the teams had modern systems to build it on the game would have been much better less corridors more open and less gaurd outposts that auto regen

Knushwood Butt1003d ago

How do you use guns when not in a gunfight? Shooting trees?

lonewolf101003d ago

Yes and you could do that for hours in FC2 with a gun and it wouldn't jam, not hard to grasp is it.

Knushwood Butt1003d ago

I see.

I haven't spent hours shooting trees.

I must try it.

Love Far Cry 2 on Infamous difficulty.

Hikoran1003d ago

This should be an opinion piece. Not news.

Gwiz1003d ago

Blood Dragon is much better.

Pedrof1003d ago

Far Cry 2 may certainly not be the most "fun" game in the series but from a narrative standpoint it definitely is the most interesting of the bunch. FC2 couldn't be further away from the pointless fragfests that the following episodes turned out to be.
