Regardless of whether or not it suits a genre, developers and publishers alike are putting it in there as a tool to keep fans playing and even bore them into engaging with their MTX. As Mortal Kombat 11 has shown, even a titan of the fighter-genre isn’t immune to their appeal. It’s good that fans called them out on it this time, but we can’t expect them to exercise some restraint until we do so ourselves. If you don’t want to see even more ridiculous grind in games it doesn’t belong in, then please don’t buy the MTX they’re pushing. It’s the only way they’ll learn and the only way we can end unnecessary grind.
Despite having creative ideas, NetherRealm Studios can't properly execute them to incorporate a fun progression-based single-player mode.
A Mortal Kombat 11 Easter egg has finally been found years after it was originally teased by the senior designer who put it in.
The Humble Melee Mayhem Bundle just launched recently. It includes ten items including Mortal Kombat 11, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, Chivalry 2, and more.
Profit>Fun
Their plans aren't to keep gamers playing, it's to keep them PAYING.
I have said this a few times over the last week, they don't design the games to take hundreds of hours to complete, they don't want you to do that, they want to frustrate you so much that you end up paying for mictrotransactions to speed up the process.
It's a dirty tactic and it's ruined my enjoyment of certain games. I like to complete my games 100%, they know that there is a lot of gamers like myself out there, and they are trying to exploit that. The nonsense "it's only cosmetic" excuse doesn't work on me, completionists love cosmetics and we used to collect them for fun. It's no longer fun though, there is nothing fun about being taken advantage of.
I just don't buy these types of games anymore. If I ever hear that a game has a massive grind and microtransactions, then it instantly goes on my s*** list.
Good article by the way.
The grind problem is exasperated by increasingly invasive MTs - thankfully, single player-only titles with no MTs generally don't suffer from this problem.
In singleplayers, grinds should just be optional to just be a tad more strong. But when you have to grind to a certain lv in order to proceed the game, then thats what sucks. For most jrpgs, you may just need to grind a few more to defeat a boss and thats about it. But what these scummy companies are doing with grinding in these online games...Its horribly much worse. Even if you play hours and hours, you get so damn little tempting you to go for microtransactions.
And the root of it all? All those crappy "free2play" mobile games, they draw you in by making it easy at first, give you alot, and make you addicted. But oh boy when its over with all the tutorials and the beginning, the grind gets ridiculous and limits your play time daily tempting you to spend money. Smh I blame it all on mobile on why all these greedy a$$ corporate execs or whatever for these predatory practices in our beloved console/pc games. Yea I hate mobile.
Grinding used to be fun since you feel very accomplished by working hard and get rewarded with tons of extra exp, items, and equipments. Now its just hours and hours or even days of boring and tedious grinding and you get rewarded so little, all to tempt you to spend real world money.
I'm enjoying the single player story so far!!
